Annie's Petition I have Motor Neurone Disease, and it’s terminal. I can’t speak, am left gasping for breath, and have lost control of my hands. It won’t be long before I will end up in a wheelchair. I will be trapped inside my body with my same intellect, but unable to communicate, unable to feed myself, clean myself, or even move.
Within the next 12 months I face the prospect of suffering a horrible death, and this is the thing I fear more than anything else.
You see, this disease always wins. It just keeps taking things from me until I eventually choke and or suffocate over a long drawn out and painful end.
Unless you help me change the law, and grant me the right to choose to die peacefully at the end stage of this bastard disease. Don’t worry, I plan on milking every drop of life out of my existence, but I want the right to choose my ending. If I can deny this disease its last victory, it will be a fine day.
The NSW Parliament will be voting on the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2017 later this year. If it passes, it will allow terminally ill people like me, with only months to live, the option of an assisted death. If I qualify under strict guidelines and safeguards, I could be prescribed life-ending medication and I would be in control of my death. I too hope your end was peaceful. And I also think it is kind of odd that we can put a pet to sleep to end suffering and can't do it for people.

Absolutely. It seems cruel to let someone who is close to death, suffer.
My husband’s grandmother was diagnosed with cancer 2 years ago. She wants control over her death as well. She told me that she has been saving her morphine for when she decides she is ready to go. I love her dearly. She is a beautiful woman. We all agreed not to interfere with it when she decides it’s her time.
If she has antinausea meds then she should probably keep about the same amount that she is saving as her morphine just to hopefully prevent her body from rejecting the amount of morphine that she plans on taking...... just a thought to keep note of.

@@katydid1600 I figured that I would give the info about using antinausea meds in rough equivalent to the amount of the opiate that the grandmother is going to take in effort to hasten the speed of death (in order to have a good death) is because if her body rejects the opiate (vomits it) then the lady will likely need to wait until the next fill of medication while at the same not having any to cover for pain control until the next fill of medication. In my personal experience with having severe chronic pain, if I don't have enough opiate in my system (like right now because of the migraines I have actually get worse when I take my regular amount of opiate) I'm not a fan of having anything touching my skin whether it be air being blown on my skin, blankets/coverings, clothes or even my own skin on my body because of how hypersensitive my nerves are (I've got CRPS, central pain syndrome along with hyperalgesia and allodynia so I'm always in pain 😣😢😤).

Dear Mum.... and Dad and family, I am truly so very sorry that Mum has been struck by this truly horrible disease. I watched my mother slowly pass of this devastating, debilitating disease. What is really horrible is her intellect, your Mom's essence, who she is, that bright shiny brilliance of thought and mind, remains fully intact. My Mom passes in 2008 long before the "right to die" legislation for the terminally ill was enacted. Mom, my Mom, passed with dignity and courage, after three long years.. I remember exactly the nursing home calling at six in the morning to say she had just passed. My response... pure joy for her. " Thank God! She is free! Mom is free at last!"
Everyone has the right to terminate their own lives in situations like this. The society needs to get over it and grow intellectually.

I think it’s extremely selfish to tell someone they can’t die peacefully on their own terms. Being scared or uncomfortable with death isn’t gonna stop it from happening.
My mom passed away from ALS a little over 2yrs ago and this disease seems just like that. It starts with loss of motor skills and progresses to lose of speech and eventually takes their life. It is a horrible thing to have to endure and just as horrible to watch your loved one go through knowing that there is nothing you can do to help them other than make them as comfortable as possible and keep loving them as much as possible!! I miss my mom every second of every day and my life has changed so much since she has gone. I then lost a sister to cancer 1 year later and I was very close to her also and it has had such a huge impact on my life losing both of them, it doesn't get better with time like people say because it feels like I just lost them both yesterday and I feel that way every second of every day also. I want to say to them both, GONKY & NIMI I LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU EVERY SECOND OF MY DAY AND I WILL SEE YOU WHEN I GET TO HEAVEN ONE DAY, TILL THEN I WILL CONTINUE TO DO AS I PROMISED YOU BOTH SO KEEP WATCHING OVER ME!! 😢
hi, yes, I believe MND is the same disease as ALS. My mom also died from .aLS in 2008, yet, it feels like yesterday...
We would not allow a beloved pet to suffer like this, why another human being, especially a loved one, close family?
This is so sad! I hope the laws have changed. Maybe if the person /people who make these laws were suffering or had a loved one in the same situation I bet bet you the laws would be changed very quickly.

No one should be able to dictate when you die or how. If there is an alternative to living in a shell that no longer provides love and protection with no way out then I back people 110% to choose their own time. Xx

That's sad, when the brain gies. I think they should put people to sleep. Y should humans suffer, with neurological problems? My suster had Lewy Body dementia for 7 years. She had round the clock care, in her house , for 4 years. Diapers no motor skills, couldnt talk. The last 3, in assisted living, in Darien, CT. The Residence. It was very expensive . 3700 a month, and with all the extras, 10,000 a month. Private ins. The greedy corporations, just want money.
Everyone contact your representatives- keep pestering them every day until death with dignity legislation is passed in every state.
when our dogs are at that point we give him a shot and they just go to sleep peacefully painlessly. why can't we do that for our loved ones? why can we not get control of our politicians?
My grandad died a long drawn out death of this disease my grandma was a mormon so insisted on keeping him alive on tubes for years she didnt know how to let go . It was terrible . He was a professional footballer before he got ill so hated been bed ridden more than most .they also lived in Australia. Its been over 20 years now sad to find out they still haven't changed the laws
Who ever is at fault for making people live their last life suffering should move in and be a care taker to these people, believe me you will change your mind immediately

My cousin, who was loved by many and had an exciting life, just died suddenly at the age of 54....at times, I wonder if it's better to die young with people who love u or die old, after most of the people u once loved are gone...

Hi there, here in NZ we do have the right to assisted dying, once your disease is classed as terminal with a six month period of life left, you have the right to choose and make that decision. This was passed in parliament last year. Of course there are certain groups and doctors who stand against this bill of rights. It is your choice and yours alone! I believe there are certain states in the US that have this option available to those who seek it. I have heard that many people who are terminal and don’t have that right in their state, they move home to a another State that has that law in place. Your doctor should to able to inform you of all the details required, even if it is against his belief. Stand firm and seek out which states can assist you. I hope you get the help you need. When my time comes, I shall also chose the same path. 💕🇳🇿

My mother had a will that included a DNR if she ever had a massive stroke, for example. She'd seen my uncle Eldon and an older friend at our church who had a massive stroke and didn't want to end up like them. In '99, shortly before her 80th birthday, she had a massive stroke and ended up in hospital. The drs. did as she wanted and took her off her meds. I miss her and my dad-who had a heart attack in '84 and died while my sister and I were in college. I also desired a DNR as well and it almost became necessary as I caught Covid and nearly died in 2020- I couldn't find a pharmacy near me that had the vaccine, even though I tested negative then. Fortunately, I didn't test positive for a stroke and am still alive, taking vaccines when needed. Even Dr. Denmark, who lived to be 114, believed in vaccination shots.
No vaccine can help AFTER you’re infected with the disease.

As a nurse of decades, I've seen more death than most. I believe IF a person is terminally ill with no cure. They should have a right to a luxurious mini vacation to be completely pampered as well as immediate family. Have a luxury hotel so them, their pets ,spouse and children can be with them and gently and lovingly help them be truely free.
I would want that....a nice gentle massage, bubble bath....nice meal....my beloved pets and children around me....soft music......

You live in immense unending pain with cancer and have trouble swallowing then no longer being able to eat. At the end looking like a skeleton from a concentration camp. I 🤔 think know after her death it would have been better for her to choose assisted death than crying out in pain from cancer😭
