    I feel like Chinese badminton team trained Chen Long almost specifically for playing Lee Chongwei: solid defence to counter Lee's quick smashes (24:08, 21:53, 15:41, 11:02, 30:07) great backhand to counter/inject change of pace (15:43), higher reach for quick smashes for not giving Lee any time to break (28:32, 20:12, 14:00)
    Lee's only chances were 1) baiting Chen into attack/bating Chen into soft drops, this way he moves Chen around and mess up Chen's defence (11:04, 2:42, 5:00, 18:00) 2) to speed up and gain control of the front court (4:00, 4:29, 5:00, 16:35). He did try to speed up many times in early/mid game, but unfortunately for a man at age of 34, he couldn't keep up the full speed for the entire match. Chen also played a better base game, as Lee made many mistakes towards the end of game 1 (29:28, 31:25, 27:27) potentially due to tiredness from speeding up too early & a dreadful match with LD the day before.
    Anyways, this was a great match, and I am glad to analyze it after 4 years. Thanks for the upload.

      Definitely agree with your analysis of Chen Long's style. It seems created specifically to counter Lee Chong Wei. He happens to struggle against some opponents like Lin Dan and Victor Axelsen even in his prime, but he was head to head or even edging out Lee Chong Wei, who was more all-rounded.

      @@JohnSmith-kj3jyHard to say. Lee made too many mistakes later on in the game, which to me it looks like he's tired. However, Chen had an upper hand psychologically from the start, as he was the reigning world champion at the time, and Lee had past his prime already

    I hate that CL never got the popularity he much deserved.
    For one, he is literally in the Tier of Linda and LCW.
    The rivalry between LD and LDC had overshadowed his presence.
    Even after landing 2nd place at Tokyo Olympics- adding another medal to his portfolio,
    He was still not regarded (by fans) as someone who is truly legendary (just like how fans treated LD)

    • @Thelegendarytrinity

      i really think luck wasnt on lcw side that day. or maybe he wasn't the fated one to win gold for us. there were just too many 50/50 shots that should have went lcw's way but they just didnt. when he played safe the shuttle didnt cross the net. when he played aggressive he missed. its like one of those things where he wanted to go aggressive but after a few mistakes, he was scared of going so much on offence and started play safe. so in sport terms, he started to play chen long's game. was just a really really unlucky day for him

    • @yl6869
      @yl6869 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Ridiculous reason. He lost in 2 games 2008, you could say he was young and inexperienced. But after 2012, where he was so close. He should have trained himself to disregard the pressure. If he could not, then he does not deserve to win the title. Chen Long were even younger than him and also had tremendous pressure.

    • @yoeltrianto1223
      @yoeltrianto1223 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@yl6869 not as same as LCW's, not even close.. Imagine if Chen Long had lost at this match, people still made excuse of him because he was young and did his first olympic final (like LCW's first experience of Olympic Final in 2008), but how about LCW in 2016? 3 times of final.. with 2 defeat on result before, not to mention another fact that in SF he'd already won against Lin Dan who defeated him in 2 previous final.. Simply said that the public expected LCW to won the final no matter what !
      We all surely know that every professional player like LCW should deal with the pressure, but we have to admit that (so far) no other badminton player has a similar case like LCW particularly in Olympic Match, so the pressure may be different than another badminton player ever carry

    • @yl6869
      @yl6869 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@yoeltrianto1223 Chen long was 27 in 2016, that was his second time. He lost to LCW 2012, and he was a bronze medalist. And imagine people’s expectations on him when Lin Dan got taken out. China being the dominant power in badminton cannot accept their player losing gold medal. So if he lose, he will be doomed.
      LCW is just not on the same level with CL and LD. Facts

    • @yoeltrianto1223
      @yoeltrianto1223 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yl6869 CL just stepped into semifinal in 2012, so it means this was (2016) his first time reaching final. And as you said, CL was ever defeated by LCW in previous Olympic match, so this would even add more burden and public's expectation on LCW for winning this match.
      Then, no wonder if China also expected more on Chen Long to win the game. But i have a little bit of doubt about statement of China's domination in badminton at that time, even China just put 2 contestants in all sector's final match (Chen Long and Fu Haifeng / Zhang Nan) at Rio Olympic. Maybe the pressure on Chinese player would be bigger on Beijing 2008 (when China acted as Olympic host) or London 2012 (all Chinese got gold medal in every sector, so if one of them supposably failed.. Chinese people would blame him severely)

    Reposted I feel like Chinese badminton team trained Chen Long almost specifically for playing Lee Chongwei: solid defence to counter Lee's quick smashes (24:08, 21:53, 15:41, 11:02, 30:07) great backhand to counter/inject change of pace (15:43), higher reach for quick smashes for not giving Lee any time to break (28:32, 20:12, 14:00)

    How sad Lee Chong Wei tried so hard to win an olympic gold medal but he never did, he played #3 olympic finals but he never won, he never stopped trying and he should deserve an olympic gold medal🥇🥇
