Mississippi River Rock Hounding

  • In today's video I go to the stained waters of the Mississippi River to do some rock hounding. Lots of cool rocks and minerals can be found along the Mississippi River like obsidian, fossils, and of course agates! The water this year is some of the lowest it's ever been, so I am hoping that it exposed lot of new rock for me to rock hound. Thanks for watching!

    I think the big piece of obsidian is actually a clinker from a coal stove. You can tell by all the air bubbles in it. When I burned coal I removed many, they are formed when the clay in the coal melts. Keep up the great videos and God bless you and your family.

    • @gengoosekhan
      @gengoosekhan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That large, rough piece is a good indicator that it is. It is where the slag silicates were dumped on gravel that gets melted into it. I grew up next to a coal mine near the Miss and would find it often.

Very interesting to see such different kinds of river stone in your neck of the woods. Loved that obsidian. Didn't know it looked like that in it's raw form. As others have stated, that black porous material is slag, but what no one has mentioned yet, is that it's full of heavy metals and can poison you if you handle it a lot. It's best to leave it where you find it.

    I think those birds may be sand pipers or Killdeers, hard to tell from a distance.... they behave like either of those two choices.
    Crazy how low the water is! They must be holding water back behind the dam!
    When the water is low its an opportunity to search ground normally not available, so its good to see you taking advantage of that.
    A few constructive suggestions:
    -Show us the area around you, the dam, the trees, the view as many of us have never been in your area and im sure most would agree they would like to see and feel environment you are hunting in. A drone would help with that!
    -sell the viewer each find with subtle drama, dont over do it, just make each reveal suspenseful. Normally it just a matter of thinking that way and you will find your style of doing that.
    - carry a small stiff bristle brush, that helps expose the rock for you and often is all the suspense you need on each reveal.
    - Tell us some history of the area you are hunting in, that gives background info that gives your videos depth.
    thank you for being brave in putting yourself out there... keep up the great work, looking forward to the next vid...
    Best wishes from Vancouver Island BC Canada
    p.s. Do you hunt morels?
