Digby was a fast learner driving the S to a win. He had co-driven a Chrysler Valiant auto. into 11th. place in the 1966 Bathurst race where the car in front of him was the same make but the first nine placegetterrs were ALL Cooper S's.
How can we ever forget those little " bricks".

If I remember correctly, the Ford Falcon in Australia used the same 200hp 286cu in V-8 as well as the same transmission, suspension and chassis as that used in the 1965 Ford Mustang.

The XT GT Falcons in this race were using 302 cubic inch engine. No real match for the Monaro 327 of the day. In 1969 or 1970, the XW GT used the 351 ci and they raced a Monaro 350 and later the Torana XU1, with (initially) the 186 six cylinder and later the 202 six cylinder. .

Brilliant posts, HAHAA, Battle for Second, poor old body rolling Tanks with the same rubber patch as the Mini.
All the power in the world can only corner so fast!
    Beauty Mate. Loved it thanks.

The Mini's were fantastic. But in the dry and on longer circuits they simply could not match the big guns. Interesting fact about smaller cars vs big v8s is that at Oran Park, the big GT Falcons with their 351 ci engines could not beat the smaller GTR XU1 with its engine of virtually half the size. Better braking and handling beat raw horsepower on that circuit.

Wow Norman May must have been going through a phase what a funny little accent he's putting on here.
It's the little ones versus the big ones Brian... what's happening here Brian... the little ones are winning Brian why are they doing that?

Many interesting aspects to this movie - not least of which is the commentator! How does a guy who knows so little be the commentator? "The little ones" are winning. Haha!

He's also wrong in that the big car's are not dropping their speed for safety.
They are slower because they can't put power down to the track because the tires are slipping on the wet track.
Similarly the heavy cars weight means they can't go around the corners as fast or slow down as quickly as the lighter 70hp Mini Cooper S's.

He was ABC Sports commentator Norman May, but his interest in sports was mainly swimming. Has some TH-cam coverage of his career.
ABC at that stage thinking Motor Sports are a standard sport so not wanting to pay money to a specialist although the other guy deserves more of the microphone,

Influenced by that is how the original Monaro Shire in NSW was pronounced locally for perhaps a hundred years before a GMH employee on holiday in the area was inspired by the name for the new car under development that Holden were not having much luck seeking a name for.
So I will cut them some slack for that as well as Cam ero often heard in the US perhaps even more so.

Play by play announcer knows nothing about racing.
Fire the exec that gave him the gig.

The main commentator is ABC's Norman May who was a benchmark in those days. I was surprised to hear him calling cars as he was very well known for calling swimming at Olympics during 60's and events like surf life saving. He was awarded the Order of Australia before his passing. His assistant here is Brian Foley who was one of our better touring car drivers, also in a Cooper S. Briian becme a successful Alfa Romeo racing driver and dealrship owner.
