    Something I forgot to mention in this video: Isometric art is great for games because it can be tiled, which enables art to be used and re-used, saves the artist time and effort, and keeps the visuals consistent and appealing.

      @Jazza - Thanks for the wonderful tutorial. One doubt - are low angle, Medium Angle, High angle, all types of Isometric projection? It would not be 30 degrees right? So what are the angles then? Please reply. Thanks.

  • @noxabellus
    @noxabellus 9 ปีที่แล้ว +320

    Just so you know, most games use a slightly different angle, where the grid cells have a 2:1 ratio for width/height. About 26.565 degrees in Illustrator. This ratio allows the pixels to have an even rise/run so you don't get jaggy lines. It also makes the math for drawing tile maps really simple.

    • @sethtaylor8286
      @sethtaylor8286 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      noxabellus This is true if you are making a game with pixels. (Which is what I worked with most) But he is probably teaching this method to people who are making flash games/movies. There wont be jagged edges.

    • @noxabellus
      @noxabellus 9 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      It's not just about that though. If you are doing something where you use tiles like are depicted in the preview image of the video, you still want the 2:1 ratio, regardless of if you're using pixel or vector graphics, so that it is easy to draw the tiles in the correct place. That way, to transform a world coordinate to a screen coordinate all you have to do is
      [(X - Y), (X + Y)], whereas if you choose a different ratio you will have to apply all sorts of transformations.

    • @noxabellus
      @noxabellus 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Not only that, it's really easy to make a template for a 2:1 ratio. Make a square. Rotate 45 deg. Scale vertically to 50%. Done.

    Another note about Isometric objects for games. Usually the bottom should fit to the grid in such a way that you can place objects close together, or on top of each other (connecting, like a wall), but the height of an isometric tile can be just about any height you wish as the levels are drawn from back to front so any tall objects (like trees or tall buildings etc) will hide what is behind them. With that in mind, if you're making graphics for a game, than make certain you draw things like trees with a transparent background so you can see what is behind them.

  • @NeilRoy
    @NeilRoy 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Fun things to try, create a piece of a castle wall, just a short section, make sure the ends of it lines up with the grid, then once you draw something you like, copy and paste it to create a longer wall, piece each section together, maybe even fit the tower in there, create a gate for it etc. For a game you then load in these pieces to create various maps, or you could save the pieces and use it to create your own scenes for art, reusing buildings, wall sections and such to recreate different scenes. That is how they use these in the games, because all the angles are the same, the pieces fit together seamlessly (if created properly). In programming, you would store your map in a 2D grid, and always always always, draw your maps from the back to the front, this way taller graphics in the front will overlap things in the back. Just envision the isometric map like a slightly rotated, diamond shaped 2D map.
    Oh, about that tower, you could have drawn the top by making two circles, a smaller circle within the larger one, then draw the lines down for each section and erase the gaps, that would make the angles more accurate and probably be a lot easier.
    Another way to do the round shapes (like the tower) is to draw a square at the bottom, as if you're drawing a square, box shaped tower, then draw a circle that fits inside that square and of course, then erase the lines from the square, copy and paste.
    Another good game to look at for this style is Age of Empires 2. A note though, hills can be really tricky from a programming standpoint. It's interesting to note that Diablo 2 doesn't have any hills at all. They just made the levels look so interesting that you don't really notice. :)

    7:40 Sims 1 was definitely proper isometric. Everything was 2D except the Sims themselves, some FXs like the plumbob above their heads and any object Sims would use in animations. The walls were technically 3D, but they were shown in an isometric perspective. Objects were sprites with an individual image PER angle of rotation, and 3 levels of zoom.

    Perhaps an easier way to do the cart would be to draw the wheel and an axle for it as they do not change angles when it tilts down. The tip of the handles for it are on the ground, at the same level as the bottom of the wheel, so you could start with a line which goes from the ground where you want the handle to start, and in a straight line, over the axle (using it as a guide) and behind the cart. Repeat for the opposite side (or copy paste) and it should come together much easier and more accurate I would imagine.

  • @xormak3888
    @xormak3888 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another reason for not using perspective in 2D video game art is the fact that many games have a moving camera. and as the camera/the point of view moves the perspective of objects would have to inevitably change along with it, otherwise the illusion would break after just mere minutes of gameplay.

Scale height to 50% (for average, Some do 57.7% or you can play with the number to get the higher and lower angles Jazza mentioned).

    If you want more precision in doing circular shapes, I suggest to draw a compass rose as reference. If all the cardinal directions pointers have the same length, it will form something like a circle on its centre. The more directions you do, more circular shape you get. It's geometry theory, and I hope it works.

    "low angle", "medium angle" and "high angle" are not all isometric. In Isometric, all angles are at 120 degrees to each other. The generic term for all three is axonometric projection or orthographic projection.

    Oblique is 45 degrees and all the 45 degree axis are 1/2 the actual dimension (ie. a length of 500mm would be drawn as 250mm).
    Isometric is 30 degrees.

    I really find architectural and mechanical, even landscape drawings, to be rather easy in isometric. Can you do a specific video over characters in isometric perspective? I could really use a crash course on that, for a game I'm doing "programmer art" for :D

    Jazza, would you go over this topic again in a future video? This video wasn't all that clear to me and your facecam was in the way a few times

    I would like to correct one thing, to avoid confusion. Isometric view indeed has rules, i/e if one would to draw a simple plane (in form of tile), left and right angle would be 60 degrees while top and bottom one would be 120 degrees (equaling 360 degrees total). If one would draw axis lines, all would be at 120 degrees. the word isometric itself means: all angles equal (from Greek: equal measure).
    Now, I read in one of the comments that someone got some experience with isometric view from isometric games aka 2.5d. For people that want to do THAT, there's something called diametric view. Game developers know this. Left and right angles of the tile are around 53.1 degrees while top and bottom angles are round 126.9 degrees (there are tutorials for this that are easy to find).
    Why those weird angles? There's a simple reason. Someone will have to create bitmaps for tiles. Using standard angles would produce pixel sizes in decimals, i/e 64px width would make 36.95 pixels height of a tile. Can't make bitmaps in decimal sizes in pixels. Using diametric view, height of a tile is exactly half of the width, meaning, the angles are different meaning, a tile that's 64px wide is exactly 32px tall, which makes producing tiles for games quite easy. The other thing is movement itself. Any i/e movement towards top left at (seemingly) 45 degrees would be half a tile up and one tile left. This makes it all easier for both designers and programmers.
    I hope this helps someone in the future.
