    At this point in the game, mass effect was such a good experience. It was already in my favorite games by this point. But seeing this planet for the first time, and experiencing the music and lore… it’s a feeling of awe and mystery. It brought the full weight of the desperation of a race that was over the edge of extinction. They were done. But the tune offered hope. Hope In a galaxy bound for darkness. As much as I love the sequels, playing this game for the first time will always stand on its own. A masterpiece.

      @@truaitchgoldi2963 Because the story never took us back to Ilos, and we never got any information on the last of the Protheans that took the Conduit back to the Citadel. Ilos was a place of wonder and amazement, the last stand of the Protheans - the last bastion of their Empire and technology. Also, "Day 1 DLC" as BioWare called it was some major bull - along with the terribly written cliche that was Javik.

    • @truaitchgoldi2963
      @truaitchgoldi2963 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@tonycmac Wasnt it mentioned in Mass Effect 2, I believe though Im not sure, by the salarian Dalatrass that Vigil shut down and therefore there is no more valuable information to get from Ilos since the whole compound went dark? But I definitely agree that there should have been a bigger focus on that. Bad writing is inevitable I guess but I think they portrayed it the way they did to show how much humanity accomplished through the remnants of Prothean technology, in the end the Mass Effect games are always focused around humanity and not the Protheans especially in ME3 there was not much space to fit in Prothean lore with a big ass Reaper invasion going on.

    • @tonycmac
      @tonycmac 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@truaitchgoldi2963 The council mentions in ME2 that Vigil became non-operational. The facility is not "dark" per se, but most of it is non-functional. There are a few reasons to get back to Ilos from a gaming and story standpoint. The Protheans were far more advanced in their cycle than we are in ours. Gathering and learning from their left behind tech would advance us greatly in the Reaper war. Often in story writing you try to bring things "Full Circle". Ilos would have been a great way to accomplish this, especially because the Conduit could still grant access to the Citadel (for instance). A huge amount of ME1 focused on the Protheans (and the Reapers who led us to believe that all of this tech was actually Prothean). One of the main enemies in ME2 are the Collectors, who are nothing but re-purposed Protheans. The Protheans are / were a big part of ME3 as well with characters such as Javik and the Prothean VI named Vendetta. If you recall, Vigil in ME1 had a way to detect if organics were Indoctrinated - this would have been a key tool to help our cycle weed out both Cerberus agents as well as Reaper influenced minds. There were a lot of reasons to get back to Ilos that BioWare ignored. The Protheans gave our cycle a fighting chance and they could have done more if the writers of ME3 had more time to flesh the story. Lastly, one of the things that was so amazing about ME1 was the fact that it was not human centered - Humanity was not the top-dog dominant force. We didn't even have a seat on the Council. We had to earn that seat, and I really liked that. Had it not been for Tali and Garrus in ME1 the whole show might have gone up in smoke if Sovereign's attack had come to the Citadel as a complete surprise. Shepard's conversation with Navigator Pressley about having aliens on the ship firmly put down the fact that humanity was finally beyond racism and "species-ism", and that we needed to work together. These are just a few of the reasons that I enjoyed Mass Effect so much, and why I had such high hopes for ME3.

    Iconic, when I got to this scene, I still had so little idea of what protheans were. The moment you finally interact with Vigil was defining the first direct contact with Prothean civilization through conversation and I loved every minute of it. Later learning that this is actually in the ruins of the Inusannon civilization made it that much more incredible.

    Thank you for this hour long version of such a magically mysterious and beautiful track. It sort of makes feel sorry for both Protheans and the Reapers. The Protheans were a seemingly peaceful and incredibly advanced race of people who have been arbitrarily wiped out because of another race's insatiable appetite for expansion and domination in the Universe. Has anyone seen the film i, robot and the TV show called Stargate SG-1?
    There's a quote on i, robot mentioning how robots are designed and manufactured by other robots, there's no Human presence from exception to production. Well, to me, that's where I feel that the Reapers came from.
    Only the robots who designed them don't share any resemblance to their successors. And similar to the Replicators on Stargate SG-1, all the Reapers want to do is take over and consume everything, until there's nothing left.
    Imagine what that must be like, to have no real purpose or meaningful end goal. The only thing compelling them onward is just wanting to consume and turn everything into more of what they are. No feelings to drive them, just logic. Even machines need a purpose.
    But let's just say they accomplished that, then what? are they just going to go dormant, or fester until they rot away, that's if they would actually rot.
    Gives a whole new meaning to "it's lonely at the top" 😋
    If they did succeed at doing all that, on the plus side for them, I hear machines don't get bored 😆

    @LPeck1985 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    A real thought provoking masterpiece. I mean, I don't need music to drift off and wonder what mysteries lie beyond our own understanding. But this does increase that kind of thinking tenfold. I mean, humanity is divided right? Via politics, war, religion, the colour of your skin and so many other things. Why is it, that so few of us wonder about the universe as a whole, want to witness or gaze upon the unknown. I don't care about the colour of one's skin, religion or war. I believe we could learn from one another, and go far beyond the generic shit that is spoon fed to us daily.
    Sorry for the rant, I'm just fed up of seeing us destroy not only ourselves, but everything around us too.

    • @tonycmac
      @tonycmac 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So you are saying that if we find an inactive Mass Relay in the outer reached of the solar system, that we should open it? If all of the Turians are as cool as Garrus and Nihlus maybe we could avoid the First Contact war. I'm all for it, as long as the Reapers are imaginary. I think that something like what is portrayed as the future in this game could indeed save humanity. All of the issues that divide us as a species pale in the face of meeting sentient life and working towards becoming part of the Galactic community. This is one of the reasons that I fell in love with Mass Effect.

    • @bezejel
      @bezejel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The sad reality is, humanity is probably never going to get over the issues that divide us. After a few more generations, I don't think we'll even be around.
      It was in the 90s that I really got into science fiction stories. Not so much TV shows or movies, but the books my parents had, huge compilations of classic science fiction from around the so-called 'Golden Age" of science fiction.
      I was once really optimistic about the future. I was excited about the technological advances we''d make, excited about exploring space and perhaps even populating it, though I didn't think I'd see it in my lifetime, except maybe a moonbase or Mars or something. Yeah, it was pretty naive, but there were so many possibilities ahead of us.
      But today, I don't think we have much of a future at all, on Earth let alone off of it. Greed and hatred have divided humanity. Our planet is being exploited by greedy businesses empowered by corrupt politicians, and our fears are exploited by hateful ideologues. We just aren't learning from our mistakes.
      If another civilization ever finds us, it will be because they didn't make our mistakes. We'll have nothing to show them or teach them. All we'll have is a record of a people who destroyed themselves and their homeworld.
      I hope one day I can look back on this comment and smile at my past self, probably wish I could tell past me that things were going to get better, that humanity as a whole started down a united and sustainable path. But I just don't see it happening, not in my lifetime or afterwards.
      Isaac Asimov, one of my favorite authors, said "The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom." While I'm 100% gonna come off as a pretentious arse by dropping a quote, I can't help but think his observation holds true today.

      @@GamingAmbience "No looping"?
      Surely you jest. If the *audio* is an hour long, and you're saying it's a ten-minute recording, *you've looped it six times to fill that hour.*
      The *video* uses three CG images, twice each. Number three (and thus, also six) is the actual "just before having the conversation with Vigil" location, and it shows most clearly the animation loop at its source. The "force field" animation loop I was specifically referring to is pretty obviously looped. (it's 2-3 seconds long, and you can see a triangular shape dropping in front of Shepard and team.) The water and force field animations are running different loop lengths, but that doesn't mean they're not looped at the source.
      The alternatives would be that each scene is at least 3:20 of 30FPS original animation (which would be heartbreakingly expensive in the early 21st century) or procedurally-generated (which we as a civilisation do not have in any practical sense.)
      None of which diminishes the haunting beauty of what you've assembled. Very good work!
