Yup, about time to change your top 5 Chris. Jonas Vingegaard was always stronger than you realized. And happy to see Jai Hindley take the stage and yellow. He was in sleeper mode all spring, and Bora allowed him to hide, didn't put pressure on him. Emu is also in fantastic form. I like the calm strength of the Bora team
Unfortunately, I don't think anything is wrong with Pogacar. Based of the analysis of Lantern Rouge, Jonas did the Marie Blanque 92 seconds faster than Pogacar and Roglic in 2020. This means that Pogacar was close to a minute faster today than in 2020, but still didn't stand a chance against Vingegaard. This year is nearly a copy and paste stage from 2020 from Pau to Laruns with nearly identical stage profiles before the last climb and it was stage 9 in 2020 compared to stage 5 this year. It was a climbing day on stage 8 of 2020, so maybe the riders weren't as fresh in 2020 as today, but that wouldn't make up the difference in why Pogacar was still 1 minute faster today. This wasn't even a stage such as Huatacam or Granon where Jonas has dropped Pogacar before because Pogacar was doing a lot more work than Jonas before the last climb and this climb isn't the long high altitude type of climbs like the previous climbs either. Fact of the matter is that Vingegaard is the best climber in the world and it's not even close. It hurts me to say this as a huge Pogacar fan, but despite him being better than ever, I don't seeing him getting any higher than 2nd in GC unless Vingegaard has a crash or terribly timed mechanical. I know we'll see many attacks from Pogacar in the weeks to come but I doubt he'll be able to drop Vingegaard and hope he will still have legs at the finishes to at least rack up some stage wins.
yes but if that were the case he would not have been caught on the downhill since he is faster than or his equal on the descent. TP form or sickness if any , was apparent by his inability to outsprint the 6 riders he rode to the finish with for the last 3 or 4k. Lots of tells on his lower fitness or health in todays race. As I said three stages ago bad chemistry and tactics in by UAE
Awesome riding by Vingegaard. Legs hurting tomorrow after that. Annoying to watch that no one wanted to help pull in the end but happy to sprint for 2nd and 3rd after he pulled them to the Line.
With Jonas vs Pogi is it realistic to say Jonas is straight up better especially in the high mountains. Pogi did the final ascent in this stage 5 faster than the stage in 2020, the same climb was used, he won (was stage 9 I believe). Jonas has proven over longer climbs to have Pogi’s number (hautacam, granon, and ventoux in 2021)
Very interesting. You would have to go back and look at the whole stage in 2020 and then compare. Rarely is does one day have the same tactics, conditions of the racing, weather, and many other factors at play can make a big difference . 🤔🦋
Yes, Jonas is a better climber. We've seen it plenty of times now and there's no reason to pack it in. His numbers and power is just better. Nothing wrong with that.
@@ChrisHornerCycling Hi . I am of the opinion that if Vingegaard didn't have to wait for Roglich i 21 . He would have fought for the Tdf win , possibly won. I don't remember him loosing time after Rog was out, only taking back time.
@@Micpoulsen Nah, he wasn't good enough that year. He lost 4 minutes on that stage 8 (though to be fair he'd crashed). He got gapped by Carapaz multiple time, only dropped Pog once (only to get caught again), only beat him once, in the last TT. He also never waited for Roglic. However, I think he absolutely would have set Roglic up to win that tour if Colbrelli hadn't chopped him. But Vingegaard has improved out of sight in the last two years, he's the new Chris Froome for mine.
@@ChrisHornerCycling documentary from when Jonas was 15 proves he is 1 out of a million. Doctors had never seen a better heart even with other sports athletes.
UAE looked like JV did the last few days. This stage was a great stage. I watched the whole stage it was so great to watch. JVD looked strong today! My confidence is back for JV and JVD again!! Great job, Chris. The guys on the broadcast need to take some lessons from ya on how to call a race!!🤜🤛
The vibrations on that wrist would have to be giving Pog some grief. Broken bones take time to properly heal. A wrist takes real time to heal, being an unstable and complicated joint.
Jonas is a lot stronger than most thought, and Pogacar isn't. UAE's squad abandoned him. Jumbo now looks smart for allowing Roglic to skip the Tour. Vingegaard will be in yellow soon!
Yep and last years crash on the cobbled stage was not even his fault. Fricking murphys law put the obstacle in the road 🥲 but the vuelta crash on the other hand..
I think UAE switched identities with JV today because they looked lost. Loved how Sep just stuck with Pogi too. Jai was on point today. Well deserved win.
I think that the winner today was us, because a motivated Hindley could be a dangerous rider for the GC. All he would need is for Jonas to have one bad day and for h8m to have an exceptional one.
JV were not as lost at all as Chris made it seem. Their main goal was to keep Jonas safe and they did. Plus to safe some energy for Kuss and he did. plus to safe some energy for the other guys and they did. They only did not manage their least important goal, winning a stage with Wout. And UAE were not doing as great as Chris suggested either. They were trying to act the big alpha dogs for five days, including today, wasting plenty of energy in the process. Both with their cycling as with Pogi’s off the bike nonsense. Which is the opposite of wat they should have done, especially when you are not sure about Pogi’s form as his manager claimed afterwards.
UAE like English cricket team this summer. The big wins of Bazball got them over excited against cold-blooded competence of Australia. In sport for fun and entertainment vs winning is all that matters. Corinthian spirit vs professionalism. French élan, the 'dashing blade', or Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones shooting the berserker? All good fun
Sure, Jonas was supreme on the climb. But i didnt expect him to put time into Pogacar on the DESCENT and hold off a group of ten ON HIS OWN in the flat.
That would have blown up the break, so if your team was vulnerable and could not bring the break back, perhaps not so stupid (until teammates got back on). OTOH Soler helping the break later (or at all)...
Missed that, but Hindley was in the break and look what happened? Why would it have been wrong for Pog? If he could have brought at least 1 teammate (as Hindley did) it would have been smart (maybe Solaire who was in the break) - maybe Pog realized the break was a good idea.
Every time Pogacar made a move like that last year Jumbo went crazy and were all out of position to properly deal with it, so it wasn't necessarily a terrible idea.
@@Fyr35555 I think ou can toy with the opposition like that only if you are as strong as Pogacar was last year. This time he should obviously have saved his strength.
I like this type of video with a lot of tactical analysis, a simple recap can be done by anyone but tactical error and analysis is the strength of the butterfly effect. I know most of the races/stages might not have a lot of error or interesting things but Chris always try to include this type of analysis as much as possible, it will be better for the channel. Just a suggestion.
@@tonyg3091and that's precisely why you would not let hindley on the break. Being able to stay unnoticed and then profit from the JV-UAE battle (and holding off VINGEGAARD on the false flat final!!) was something of genius. I already thought that hindley was going to the final podium but for me this changes everything, he's the real deal.
I think Chris you did not expect your favourite to be dropped. I told you, Jonás has dropped Pogacar multiple times starting in 2021, when he dropped Poggy in Mont Ventoux wearing the white jersey. That was the moment when Jonás realized he is better in this type of long climbs.
The wind was also a big factor in today's strategy. The first 70km were riding into a cross headwind from the NW. Once the 40+ breakaway was established there were no teams left with any reason to assist UAE in the chase because they all had riders in the break. Then when the stage reached the mountains all 3 climbs today were done with a tailwind. This is why Van Aert went over the HC Soudet and 3rd cat d'Ichere in the lead group and he was still with the lead group until 2.4km from the summit of Marie Blanque. This was a sign to Jonas of where an attack was possible. Tomorrows stage 6 is exactly opposite, they go out with a cross tailwind and finish with climbs into the wind. It will be interesting to see which teams work together.
Right, and I just could not figure out WHY UAE was pulling on the front for so long. Why don’t they let the JV team pull some? WvA is not really a GC threat in the breakaway, so why did UAE do this? Solaire’s mistake was bad, but UAE pulling 1/2 the day was crazy, no?
This stage was CRAZY and turned the pre-race expectations of the Tour up on its head. It was amazing for Jai Hindley to win the stage and take the yellow jersey hours after talking about how it would be his dream to wear yellow. How will Bora play defense now they have the race lead? Is Jumbo finally clicking with their tactics? Is UAE suffering from a loss of form? Lot of questions to answer in these next stages.
You’re right about Pog being off. He couldn’t stand on the pedals so I wonder if his wrist is still sore. I’d heard that he not 100% healed. Great job of sorting out all the players Chris.
I mentioned this very tactical move by Jumbo in one of your Giro vlogs. I said UAE hasn’t the depth nor the strength to follow Jumbos power, but if UAE was able to suck on Jumbo without showing their weaknesses and not go for the yellow too early they could possibly surprise the Jumbo squad,,, and Jonas, well you need to change your stance on his world ranking. I think he’s tied at number one with two others (you can figure that math out) Now, being a huge fan of Jumbo and all the riders across their roster including the woman’s amazingly powerful squad, I’m actually excited to see if Bora can put Jia in the Yellow in Paris. I know it’s a pipe dream, but what a special and spectacular thing it would be to see JH win the tour. That young man is a beautiful human being and would represent the ultimate cycling achievement with class. Still, Jonas, you are my hero brother…..
Jumbo and JV knew Tadej was struggling with his injury and tried to fully exploit it. I'm surprised that he even came to the tour, as there was no way he could train as effectively as necessary to win the Tour.
how ever pogi was 45 seconds faster on the last climb compared to 3 years ago...Jonas has upped his game from last year clearly and was world record fast today
He and his team never gave him the chance to do that. They drove it so hard for no reason and then the 1 time they were supposed to go ham and bring a 30 man break back they took it like a Sunday group ride. It might be too late now. The way Rafal Majka was driving it the other day was what they needed today. Tadejs whole team looks cooked honestly.
@@jojoadeyemi8239 Yup I think UAE is carrying way more fatigue than any other team. Pog's body language on stage 5 looked cooked. I don't see them having a good stage 6. I think they're looking forward to the rest day.
I waited all day for this video to come out so I could say that Chris Horner might need to shuffle his list and he said himself at the end of this video. One thing you didn't mention is that not only did Sepp Kuss ride everyone off his wheel other than Jonas and Tadej, he then closed the gap to Tadej and rode over the top of the climb attached to his back wheel. Not only do I think Jonas is in better form than Tadej but Sepp seems to be in better form than Adam Yates. It's going to be some tough days ahead for UAE.
As an Aussie, as much as I would like Hindley to win, I don't think he is any match for JV. In the dauphine, JV finished 3 min ahead of Hindley and that was over 8 stages.
Thanks Chris, I agree that Pog was likely under the weather on the day. He admitted in a post race interview that on the Col de Marie Blanque he was at his limit.
Question @Chris Horner. As soon as UAE realized the mistake of letting the break-away become so big, should they have played poker and let the time grow even wider to get Jumbo Visma scared and force them to help?
@@ChrisHornerCycling I was a bit surprised that Vanaertism didn't get a shout-out, all that wasted effort today to do one pull and blow up after a few hundred meters?
Note that 18 seconds of Hindley's lead comes from bonuses (8 at the last summit and 10 at the finish). Also, I think Pedersen was in the group for the sprint. It was a great opportunity to gain points vs Philipsen. Also, note that there is a good chance that WVA will leave the race by the third week as his baby is most likely to be born before the Tour ends, and he has stated being present at the birth is more important than finishing the Tour.
@@richmartin1427because he is the strongest domestique in the world by some distance? The baby is specked to be born after the Tour, all he said that is it comes a bit earlier he will leave the Tour.
Long history of riders leaving Tour early. Sprinters at end of week 1, Olympics preparation. Helping team leader for 2 weeks is still useful so you can rest someone during first half so they can help in last half. Stage win at Tour is a bigger thing than most other races in whole year 25:13
The thing with Trek is that Ciccone is not their GC guy, Skjelmose is. Ciccone is on the hunt for the mountain jersey and stage wins. It's the same reason as to why Ciccone didn't help Jonas pull after the descent, he wasn't allowed to by team orders, as Jonas would have gained even more time on Skjelmose.
Very impressive rides by Jai and Jonas. No doubt that Jonas is alpha on the climbs. Hope Pog can ride into form before the alps in week 3. If he loses more time to Jonas tomorrow, I think Pog is fighting for second place. Given his form, I’m surprised this is Jai’s first TdF at age 27. Chris, curious of your opinion regarding Jai’s upside as TdF GC contender?
Bruyneel said that UAE should have taken the gamble by letting the break get another minute at least. With Hindley in the break at some point Jumbo would have to take up the pace making to bring the break back. In either scenario Pog could lose a m8nite, but in the scenario they chose he lost it because his team was worn down.
that is out of context - what Bruynell said, he said that Jonas was unrealisticly fast and no one in the world can or would be able to follow him when he goes that fast. 96 seconds faster han pogi in 2020 on the same climb
@@christopherprang387I agree with what you said, but on JB2 he also said that UAE should have gambled by waiting, and force Jumbo to have to take up the chase on the break.
@@CFCMahomet I agree and that would have tight up some TJV riders. but at the end of the day the result would have been the same with sepp kuss in that form driving a monster tempo for 2-3 k, right?

This wasn't even a stage such as Huatacam or Granon where Jonas has dropped Pogacar before because Pogacar was doing a lot more work than Jonas before the last climb and this climb isn't the long high altitude type of climbs like the previous climbs either. Fact of the matter is that Vingegaard is the best climber in the world and it's not even close.
It hurts me to say this as a huge Pogacar fan, but despite him being better than ever, I don't seeing him getting any higher than 2nd in GC unless Vingegaard has a crash or terribly timed mechanical. I know we'll see many attacks from Pogacar in the weeks to come but I doubt he'll be able to drop Vingegaard and hope he will still have legs at the finishes to at least rack up some stage wins.
such a spot on analysis
I think Pogo may just have had bad legs. Don’t count him out yet
yes but if that were the case he would not have been caught on the downhill since he is faster than or his equal on the descent. TP form or sickness if any , was apparent by his inability to outsprint the 6 riders he rode to the finish with for the last 3 or 4k. Lots of tells on his lower fitness or health in todays race. As I said three stages ago bad chemistry and tactics in by UAE
Refreshing to hear a realistic perspective from a Pogi fan
If someone can pull a "landis" it's pogi 😅
An excellent stage indeed
Sepp has shown his value, time and again. He’s my number one ranked domestique. 🦋
The best analysis found here.
👊🦋🙏
Love ye Chris.
😘❤️🦋
@Garrett love your little Rick Roll-y thing at the end 🤣
UAE looked like JV did the last few days. This stage was a great stage. I watched the whole stage it was so great to watch. JVD looked strong today! My confidence is back for JV and JVD again!! Great job, Chris. The guys on the broadcast need to take some lessons from ya on how to call a race!!🤜🤛
Well done Chris. fascinating...
The vibrations on that wrist would have to be giving Pog some grief. Broken bones take time to properly heal. A wrist takes real time to heal, being an unstable and complicated joint.
We need you back on TdF coverage you’re the best
Been waiting for this!!!
Jonas is a lot stronger than most thought, and Pogacar isn't. UAE's squad abandoned him. Jumbo now looks smart for allowing Roglic to skip the Tour. Vingegaard will be in yellow soon!
It’s a long tour
And chances are looking at previous tours he would have went down with Mas and Carapaz...
Roglic may have crashed by now already but if he hadn’t he would been there most likely like he always is . 💪🦋👍
Yep and last years crash on the cobbled stage was not even his fault. Fricking murphys law put the obstacle in the road 🥲 but the vuelta crash on the other hand..
Chris...you are a mamba!! Thank you.
Right. UAE we’re all over the place and just looked lost 😬🦋
Sepp doesn’t stay w Jonas to be a nice guy, that’s his job homeboy
Sure, Jonas was supreme on the climb. But i didnt expect him to put time into Pogacar on the DESCENT and hold off a group of ten ON HIS OWN in the flat.
Did you miss that Pogacar himself tried to get into a break early on? Mother of all knucklehead moves if you ask me.
Fantastic analysis as usual. Thanks Chris!
Hindley pulled off something legendary. Thanks for the analysis Chris!
It would have been legendary if MvdP did that. Jai is damn good in the mountains, you don’t win the Giro by being mediocre.
@@gerardocardona259 Imagine Jai winning the Tour? Now THAT would be legendary.
Great job of sorting out all the players Chris.
great commentary i just subscribed
And then Stage 6 happened....! Wow!
I think he’s tied at number one with two others (you can figure that math out)
Now, being a huge fan of Jumbo and all the riders across their roster including the woman’s amazingly powerful squad, I’m actually excited to see if Bora can put Jia in the Yellow in Paris.
What do you think after Stage 6?
Well done Chris!
Tadej will race into form. Edit: Chris I found the Easter egg at the end
😂
Pog was 50sec faster than him and roglic in 2020
He and his team never gave him the chance to do that.
Garrett loves putting those in the video. 👊🦋
Now that Yates lost the yellow he better work at least as hard as MacNulty would have in his stead
Hehehe. I bet you to it. That was a stage worth thinking hard about doing some adjustments. But I still need to think about some more. 😂👊👊🦋👊
duuuuuuuude! banger of a day
stage 6 revenge ? yes top stage poggy did it good win , bravo to wvh and jonas njoytdf
Impressive how Jonas extended his lead in the downhill and on the flat given hes such a light rider.
Yes. There's a good comment about downhill affecting a damaged wrist
As an Aussie, as much as I would like Hindley to win, I don't think he is any match for JV. In the dauphine, JV finished 3 min ahead of Hindley and that was over 8 stages.
Yeah nah he'd need a miracle to keep the yellow through to Paris. He's in prime position for a podium finish though which would be a fantastic result!
My Man Victor C can never get a Kuncklehead award. LOL 🤣
True that. 😂🦋👍
Been waiting all day 🎉🎉🎉
Bam. Enjoy👊🔥🦋
Thanks Chris, I agree that Pog was likely under the weather on the day. He admitted in a post race interview that on the Col de Marie Blanque he was at his limit.
Chris Horner: the number one Pogacar fanboy
Here to see how many cokes and snickers Chris thinks Tadej was lacking yesterday 😂
Question @Chris Horner. As soon as UAE realized the mistake of letting the break-away become so big, should they have played poker and let the time grow even wider to get Jumbo Visma scared and force them to help?
yes and TJV would have had to sacrifice some riders. non the less it wouldnt have changed the outcome between Jonas and pogi on the last climb
Yea, I agree that could have been a good tactic. Why sit on the front like that all day long? Make TJV do some work for christ’s sake!!
Yes they should have. Hindley is as much a problem for TJV as he is for UAE
It is fun how the 2 worst teams tactically have 2 best riders.
Jumbo's wva was silly today and uae riding hard was not needed.
"My man Victor Campaernarts" 🤣🤣🤣
I was waiting for the isms and the knuckleheads all day. 😊😉🎉
Solerism is here so you know he will never lets us down when there is three weeks of racing. 😂👊🦋❤️
This came up during the broadcast today. Unless there is a contractual thing, I can’t understand why they would bring WVA given that.
Mads was but he continued to ride after the sprint still. 🤔🦋👍
@@richmartin1427because he is the strongest domestique in the world by some distance? The baby is specked to be born after the Tour, all he said that is it comes a bit earlier he will leave the Tour.
And he's fucus is the world championships. He's obsessed with beating Remco.
Exactly 👊🍺
there is no way Skjelmose ever cares about how much time he loses to Jonas, he knows hes never going to beat Jonas.
@@poulandersen6163 And yet it was still a team order given by Kim Andersen in the Trek car.
It didn’t take long for the Solarism to take effect. When it hits, it hits hard.
So hard. 😂👊🦋
Did you just Rick roll us? LOL. I agree with Rick though, never give up on Pogacar.
Pogacar is the best rider in the world. When you are the best no race is over this far from the finish line. 🤔👊🦋
If only pogacar had a coke and a Snickers, he wouldn't not have been dropped 😂
🥤🦋
The Tour just got interesting!
Chris you will never gonna admit the strength of Jonas Vingogard , I think you are looking for excuses when Pogacar has always got dropped .Jumbo Visma is too strong team for the UAE Team. And the real problem for any GC Team is Sepp Kuss . The Guy is a monaster coming from the Giro after all the work he has done for Roglic . What A guy. Sepp Kuss is a real real Asset for Jumbo Visma . I think he has to look for another team and race as A GC leader. Hats off for Kuss
True Jonas has Pogacar's number he always drop him and they come with excuses
His the president of the pogacar fan club will never admit it
I’ve been waiting for Soler to do something tactically idiotic. He didn’t disappoint 😂🤦♂️
Great race by S. Kuss. Why did the riders with JV rode for second place when they had the chance to catch Hindley?
team orders...= to make sure jonas did not get any seconds more on Skjelmose
👆🦋👊
Mr. Horner, I must admit that when you were riding I didn’t care for you that much. Since then my opinion has totally changed! Not only was NBC idiotic for letting you go. ( I worked for them for 14 years as a mixer and editor so I know what a incompetent bureaucracy they can be), but they could replace their entire on air team as far as I’m concerned with you. Thanks for what you do.
P.S. Watching your commentary is better than watching the actual race. I should be paying you 10 bucks a month rather than Peacock.
