The only person I ever got to a line to get an autograph. Scott was super cool and also gave precious posture tips for when at the drawing board. His books opened my mind to a lot of things at the time, and they continue to do wherever I revisit them.
Early on in the video, Jim R. mentions the increasing interest in comics in academia in the early 1990s, when Understanding Comics came out. I think one part of that equation was the widely-discussed 1990 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art ''High and Low: Modern Art and Popular Culture", which presented works of Picasso, Liechtenstein, Oldenburg, etc. alongside Kirby, McCay, Herriman, etc. The museum also published an accompanying coffee table book. I remember becoming infuriated leafing through the book and seeing Plastic Man identified as a member of the Fantastic Four.
Understanding Comics is definitely discussed in my comics course, but also in general Visual Storytelling for my animation-based course too. “The McCloud theory” re: panel to panel communication of comics, is something I discuss in storyboarding for film in my uni courses too. Imho a great way to simplify ideas to students learning to communicate a panel at a time/choices in editing and storytelling by using “action to action” or “aspect to aspect” as descriptors for storytelling moments/choices of pacing. A Great book indeed. Excellent shoot as always 👍🍻
What a cool guy. Recently I’ve landed my dream job teaching comics to kids, and I rely heavily on his books. Thanks so much Scott. Great interview guys. Love your Insta.
I love this guy. Such a positive, creative guy. His mindset is infectious in the best way. Literally while watching this I drew two drawings. Just inspired by the conversation. Loving every minute of this. One of the best interviews so far. This man is just full of great history, stories, and he is still relevant and busy at innovating to this say. Great interview guys. Loved every second of it.
In 1996 the Spanish version of his book Understanding Comics arrived, thanks to the publishing house Ediciones B. I was excited to buy it and when I started reading it it blew my mind, I was fascinated with the analysis. I still have that book of course. Greetings from Chile!!! By the way, Master McCloud came to Chile many years ago.
WOW, THANKS FOR THIS! Scott McCloud’s the best! I said almost the same thing on the Tezuka’s video about him being the best but I mean, it’s Scott “Understanding Comics” McCloud!!!
Wow. Such a great interview. Gems dropped all over the place. You know how you're so happy & engaged talking to or hearing someone that you're on the verge of tears and you don't even know it, lol. No? just me, lol?
What an awesome interview! I just finished reading the Zot Black and White Collection and am currently reading Making Comics to accompany my final semester in my Comics and Sequential Art programs I am taking.
Wonderful interview fellas. Scott seems so intelligent and willing to open up, I guess that's also pretty obvious in Jo's work. Flowers for Algernon good book, Flowers for Charlie great episode!
Scott McCloud is a truly sweet soul. I worked in comics and figured I knew the score about the medium, but UNDERSTANDING COMICS kicked my ass AND rearranged my brain circuitry! I remember when I read the part about what panel gutters actually represent...and just tripping OUT, my mind *blown* with the cosmic truth he uttered.
Oh shit!! I just had a DREAM about red room, I wasn’t thinking about this interview, I was ASKING you guys for this interview in my dreams last night, that’s insane
Wow. What an interview. You all had some really well-thought-out questions and I loved how you jumped at the opportunity to learn more from some errant subject Scott opened up. When he said that the superpower of a cartoonist is to relay information efficiently, it articulated what I haven't been able to. Lots of wonderful insight from a person who is super kind, charming, and articulate. Kudos on another great interview, gentlepersons. Thanks.
I've come back to this video because I wanted to revisit that part when Scott was talking about the use of metaphor... but now I don't remember at what time it was!
I love that he calls out the idea of an editor's system which every indy needs and it ended up being a social chat room. Damn you internet! This is years of therapy and education.
Man, you guys are getting some incredible guests. Understanding Comics is a book I recommend to everyone who thinks comics is just kid stuff or super heroes (nothing wrong with those at all, but comics is so much more that those genres!).
GOTTA love this guy. Decades later, ya still got it Scott. Gotta ask -- Scott, were you listening to WBCN in January 1977 when they got the LOW album by David Bowie? GAMECHANGER! I was in the basement of the folks place, drawing...
For over a decade i was chasing a proper process for designing panels for print and for web (Later 1:1 Instagram. I was creating everything in layers that can be recomposed to avoid bad cropping, squashing, etc. Anyway, that shit took forever, nearly every object in every panel in it's own group of layers... and that's why I never got anything done. Sticking to print/page format now.
Holy fucking shit balls - you guys finally hit the big time lmao! Arguably the most influential & inspiring dudes in comics history - even for guys who make shit comix like me! He's on the comics Mount Rushmore for sure! Great interview gents!
Anyone else call themselves a Disciple of McCloud? It's funny that he does 80 pages in a single document because I also do multiple pages at a time and I didn't learn that in his class.
I would love to tell scott mccloud that he is a talented author but it would be putting him down. He simply has a master's skill and knowledge that he has gained through titanic study and experience. Although he is normally recognized by understanding comics, on the other hand THE SCULPTOR is easily the best comic I have read, no comic has had a story, themes, and a protagonist that have touched me so much.
DAAAAMN!!!
I’ll say it again. This is THE most important comics channel on TH-cam, bar none!
The only person I ever got to a line to get an autograph. Scott was super cool and also gave precious posture tips for when at the drawing board. His books opened my mind to a lot of things at the time, and they continue to do wherever I revisit them.
Understanding Comics really is a monumental work of brilliance. It almost goes beyond comics and into the metaphysical!

You guys really outdid your selves with this interview. The discussion of craft is unparalleled and inspiring.
I saw Scott at a Sparks concert, so it’s fun to hear him drop their name in the interview.

Literally asked for this in my head sometime last night while looking at my copy of Understanding on my shelf

What a terrific interview. Such a thoughtful creator 😮
I’ll be rewatching this many times! Excellent interview and lots of new insights about visual communication and expression! Thank you!
Could be my favorite shoot interview. Scott is a great communicator and an inspiration. Thank you!
WOW, THANKS FOR THIS! Scott McCloud’s the best!

I feel like the 24 Hour Comics energy still lives on in programs like 48 Hour Film Festivals, which are still going on strong in so many cities.
I wish I still had my first print and original t-shirt. Also my autograph book with a Terry sketch.
This was amazing. Great communicator and comes across as a really nice bloke.
What an important interview. Thanks for bringing this to us. Great stuff.
Flowers for Algernon is my favorite book and I never hear about it. Crazy he brought it up!
Oh wow the actual high priest of comics! This should be good...
Such a great conversation! Thank you.

My sister is going to design classes, and she has read parts of "Understanding comics" for it. This book is truly a before and after in comics
Oh shit!! I just had a DREAM about red room, I wasn’t thinking about this interview, I was ASKING you guys for this interview in my dreams last night, that’s insane

Ah I found it! 1:21:18 mark!
this feels like a tipping point for the kayfabe community
Listening to this has got me juiced up to work. I've put it on twice while drawing. Thank you very much
That was phenomenal, guys. Thanks!
Zot, one of the great 80's comic!
I love that he calls out the idea of an editor's system which every indy needs and it ended up being a social chat room. Damn you internet! This is years of therapy and education.
This wasn’t an interview as much as a MASTER CLASS. Fantastic.
The dave sims comics creation comic thats all collected essays is crazy good.
One of my favourite channels period. Loving these interviews. Keep up the great work.
Wonderful interview. Great guy.. 👍
My copy of Understanding has the 'DC' bullet for the "This is not a company" bit.

Just bought the book! Thanks again guys! Fliko Paints
Man, you guys are getting some incredible guests. Understanding Comics is a book I recommend to everyone who thinks comics is just kid stuff or super heroes (nothing wrong with those at all, but comics is so much more that those genres!).
My professor made me read Understanding Comics in college. It sparked my interest in making comics today
Very watchable, very important
You guys are my heroes. AGAIN.
Holy fucking hell, great interview, yall.
GOTTA love this guy. Decades later, ya still got it Scott. Gotta ask -- Scott, were you listening to WBCN in January 1977 when they got the LOW album by David Bowie? GAMECHANGER! I was in the basement of the folks place, drawing...
I have never heard of APAs before. Wow!
Fantastic.
Amazing. Wow. His Christmas story was perfect

That the most hype I’ve been for that channel.
This was a gem!
They mention this european artist in the 24h comics part, but I didn't catch how to write his name....is it BOULET? Please help I'm super curious
LEGEND
That Boulet comic he referenced really is worth pausing and reading.
What an amazing guy
This is great.
Nicely done fellas 👍
Steve Reich - “6 Marimba things that go on forever” 😂
GODDAMN, the man himself!
Scott is an impressive get. Greatest living sequential art thinker.

He's on the comics Mount Rushmore for sure! Great interview gents!
Anyone here knows the name of the frech artist they mention? thanks.

That is a great and very precious interview. Thank u Cartoonist Kayfabe and of course thank you Scott McCloud, your books are comic school to me.
Anyone else call themselves a Disciple of McCloud? It's funny that he does 80 pages in a single document because I also do multiple pages at a time and I didn't learn that in his class.
