      This one was custom-made to fit the shelf under my TV.
      It's almost perfect! But!! It's a little too low for a lot of plant species, so I would get a slightly higher one next time. This one is 30cm high I'd get at least 35-40cm to to make life a little let difficult for some plants. You might have seen the ferns in the previous build starting to get pressed up against the top with no more room.

    Hey, i watch your channel for some time. Maybe you could help me with my crabs, i dont know who else to ask . 1 of my 3 disco vampire crabs is suddenly dying. the last night it moved into the little water stream and within the next 24 h it stopped moving at all, its just "breathing", when i took it out of the water. The water stream is off for some time of the day, but is on the whole night, there is also a big part with not moving water. . the Water parameters dont seem very unusual pH ~ 7. The others seem fine so far, mostly they are just eating isopods and snails. More information i could provide

    • @IndoorEcosystem
      @IndoorEcosystem  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a little tricky to figure out exactly because sometimes it can just be bad luck. How long have you had your crabs for? The biggest killers are usually injury or trauma from shipping but it you haven't got them really recently it probably isn't that.
      The next biggest cause is old age it's quite possible you have an old crab but again that can be a little tricky to figure out.
      So the next thing to check is the tank. You could probably get the PH a little higher but 7 shouldn't be causing major issues. The stream not flowing all the time shouldn't be a problem either.
      I would increase the diet and diet variety a fair bit more. Get some fish flakes and fish granules in there. Some shrimp foods work well to. As well as that you can add smaller bits of egg shells for them get get calcium from. I like to feed mine boild lettuce, zucchini, spinach and other random vegs and dried meal worms as well.
      The more you mix things up the better. Plus they eat a ton of moss from the bank as well.
      Outside of that just make sure the tank isn't getting too cold for them.

    How do you water change and clean such a shallow water tank with so much land substrate?

    • @IndoorEcosystem
      @IndoorEcosystem  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The exact same way as another tank ☺️ just drain out 20-30% then top it up. There's no gravel vacuming required. Then you just top it back up. It's actually a hell of a lot quicker than a normal tank.

    I set up a paludarium with just some springtails and isopods right now I got a little bit of white fuzzy mold starting to grow. Should I let it be for now to see if the springtails can take care of it or deal with it now? I've read a bit of both online and am unsure what the best route to take is.

    • @IndoorEcosystem
      @IndoorEcosystem  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mold is pretty normal early on i just leave it and let the springtails take care of it. You can also increase ventilation and air flow to help get rid of it as well.
      If it gets worse and doesn't go away though you might have to change out the infected part but that pretty rare.
      Usually after about a month or so of waiting you shouldn't have any more problems with mold unless you over feed or something..

    The pump was just to move the water around im guessing. Do you put any type of filtration in the tank or just maybe water changes ?

    • @IndoorEcosystem
      @IndoorEcosystem  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep that's correct, it's just to get the flow going because the tank is so long. I've been experimenting a lot with different things over the last 18 months and a filter isn't always required if you know how to properly manage the nitrogen cycle. With good aquatic plants and a good surface layer of salvina or similar you can pull almost all of the nutrients from the water easily. Then once the plant roots from the rest of the tank make it down into the substrate its even better.
      I still do a 50% water change every couple of weeks though but I've left it go for 6 weeks and tested it and its come back perfect. You'll find you'll do quite a few water top ups as well which is a source of new water going in regularly. I do suggest a filter to make life a little easier for people just starting out though.
      I also use a heat mat rather than an aquatic heater. I just stick it on the side (outside) it works very well.

      @thediplomat1124 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Fantastic! I can set it on a timer then. Also, I REALLY want to set up a paludarium with an open top, do you have any tips to help prevent the crabs from climbing out? I've watched many of your videos and others for inspiration, and the idea I'm thinking of is basically build the "land" with any high points pointed toward the center and away from the rim of the glass@@IndoorEcosystem

    • @IndoorEcosystem
      @IndoorEcosystem  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thediplomat1124A timer will work well, just make sure it doesn't run long enough to fill the entire tank with a fog for too long and you'll be fine.
      As for an open top I highly advise against it as the crabs can climb the silicone in the corners of the tank and escape that way. They can also jump quite well. So there's no reason they wont climb to a high point then leap out. Though I haven't actually seen that in action I've seen them jump quite far to attack other unsuspecting crabs.
      People have kept them with open tops but risk of escape is always on the table especially once you have babies. then can climb any kind of glass.
      You also can't regulate humidity and temperatures as well with an open top. That's less of an issue in warmer places but if you need to use a heater an open top isn't really viable.

    • @IndoorEcosystem
      @IndoorEcosystem  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't have any mould issues with mine at all. It sat in the forest for over a year. I had it wedged high up in a tree after I found it. When I built the tank I went back and got it. So perhaps the natural weathering and processes helped with that. I then gave it a quick bleach dip then left it sit out in the garden for a while.
      I did have other random patches of mold in the tank for a few days early in though but springtails and some airflow fixed that up pretty quickly. How long have you had the tank running for?

    • @IndoorEcosystem
      @IndoorEcosystem  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You could do that but they can't swim so won't really use the water they spend 99% of their time on land. I also suggest not doing the barrier style as condensation etc will build up on the land side and you have to drain it out regularly or it becomes a stagnant swamp. That's why I stick to clay balls these days and a under layer of water.
