  • This is the MULL SINGING CONVENTION broadcast on Sunday, August 25, 2013. In it, Doug Hutchison (Grandson of Preacher and Lady Mull, son of Charlotte) takes a look back at the show's history. At the time of it's airing, it held the record for being the longest running locally produced TV show in the country (celebrating 57 years). Near the end of the show, Doug announces the show is ending and that another show with a new name will take its place.

    Grew up outside of Knoxville... and didn't know much about 'nuthin'.. But DID know that on Sunday mornings, two things were going to happen at our house: 1) We were going to be getting dressed for church .. and 2) The Mull's Singing Convention was going to be on TV. Pastor and Mrs. Mull are Legends in the world of Gospel Music. This was a lovely, and well deserved tribute.

    Ain't that right Lady Mull? That's right J. Bazzel! When I was a kid going to church ran a close second to listening to J. Bazzel.

    I listened in 1972 and 1973 going from Mobile to Birmingham to college. 8 or 8:30 pm and then like 4am.
    The Chuck Wagon kept me awake. Talked to Brother Mull years later and he told me he has family in Mobile.
    He said he came from Circuit Preachers and moonshiners.

      I listened during a 35 mile commute between Talladega and Anniston, Alabama. in 1969. I have long forgotten the station I was listening to, but I never forgot JB Mull and his wife. My first exposure to the Chuck Wagon Gang. I later had my own gospel show on a local radio station.

    Listened to them every night on WWL during part of my teenage years, right after "The World Tomorrow." Would the Chuck Wagon Gang have been "world-famous" without this show? :-).

      The Chuck Wagon Gang was the most famous quartet of the world. I too listened to that prog. In the 70s.i too was a teenager. If the program started with the Gang then the entire prog. would be bythe gang.

    I miss J Bazel & Lady Mull. I grew up watching them on Ch. 10. I became familiar with a lot of the singing groups back in my radio days by watching the Mulls Singing Convention.

    "Ain't that right Mrs Mull" .. Loved this program all the years I lived in Knoxville, along with all the singings they promoted around the area!

    I proudly carried the nickname "Bazzel" from the time I started high school until I was about 40 years old. My older brother got the name from his high school buddies when he got straight A's in our high school Bible class. It started out as "Preacher Mull" and later as "J. Bazzel". I started high school the year after my brother graduated. When the guys that knew my brother realized that I was his little brother I immediately became "J. Bazzel Jr.". The "J" and "Jr." were eventually dropped and I just became "Bazzel". The name stayed with me all through my college years and many years after that. I actually spelled it "Bassel" and all those years hardly anyone knew my real name. The majority of the people who knew me called me "Bassel" and seldom used my real name.

    I always enjoyed watching the show before church on Sunday mornings. When the show moved from channel 8 I couldn't get it anymore. I missed it so much. I enjoyed watching the tribute here.

    They replayed the tribute episode last Sunday so the tribute episode was the last program. The new program on MyVLT with Tommy Spencer will be airing tomorrow morning.

    did this show used to be on WBIR Knoxville?

    • @sdashper
      @sdashper  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      trxxxtr Yes. Off the top of my head, the show was originally on WBIR. Back when NBC started or expanded the Sunday Today Show. That would've pushed the show to an earlier time slot. The Mulls moved the show to WVLT (the Knoxville CBS affiliate) to keep it's later time slot. Then maybe around 2011, WVLT (channel 8.1) bumped the show to its secondary channel (8.2 MyVLT).
