The darkness of the song in itself is intriguing. It's nice that it is still attached as the soundtrack for the film. Being able to see this as originally intended is a treat when you consider how many original soundtracks (and films) have been lost. I am looking forward to more films by Mr. Linder.

I think the "soundtrack" is a real novelty for this film. I guess a record of the song would have been played in the cinema to accompany it? Would that make this one of the earliest soundtrack albums? Aside from the gimmick of the film (its subject) the song adds another layer.

    Very interesting, thanks for uploading.
Imagine from 1906 ... I think a hanging wasn't such a taboo subject at the time, so make fun of it wasn't that shocking

Why can I imagine Terry Jones (Monty Python) singing this? Spurned by the love of his life.

Very interesting! Love the cartoonish, outrageous humor.

Hello Tengy, I did find this film to be quite entertaining and Linder's performance was indeed great.
I had to laugh at the guy seated at the table who was utterly annoyed when Max Linder arrived at the scene. It made me think that Linder had appeared at this home more than once. The look of disdain on the guy was so obvious. (By the way, were they playing baccarat?)
Linder's acting in showing how emotionally distraught he was is fantastic. It does make you want to say "Awww" for the poor fellow and feel sorry for him.
It confused me to see that when he arrived at the tree, he not only had a pencil and paper handy for a suicide note but a knotted rope with a noose as well. That's eerie! 😆
The one handed lift up the tree was impressive! Nicely done!
The music and storytelling was also great
It felt like poetry. It makes me think of those really old classic Popeye cartoons where the characters sing to what's happening in the scene. The song definitely felt as being written for the movie.
I laughed again when the two guys found Max dangling and they BOTH left him to get help. Why couldn't one stay behind to at least try to hold Max up while the other run for help?
And then the second time when the guys on the horses said that a hanging man was not something they knew how to deal with so THEY ALL ran to find a competent person to deal with the situation! 😆
I was also entertained when you said that no one knew about CPR and here comes a bicyclist with an air pump just like in your review of "An Interesting Story" (1904). He gets revived with air and all is well.
His girlfriend (or lover?) seemed happy to see him alive but didn't care much for him when seeing him in the beginning of the film. Love is weird! 🤪🤪
It's sad to know that Max Linder died of hanging. I read his bio on Wikipedia and his relationship with his wife was indeed toxic.
I enjoyed this reaction. Max Linder was definitely a pioneer for future actors like Frank Fay, Harold Lloyd and Chaplin.
Thanks for another entertaining video Tengy. 📽❤️

In the days before CPR... and closeups.

Yes, all long shots! There's nothing cinematic about the way it's filmed - only the editing between scenes....

I'm sure it originally had intertitles in French that would be more witty and amusing to a French audience. Some of these really old films travelled a circuitous route to preservation, losing intertitles and footage as the copies circulated. Many of the preserved silent films came from Russian bootleg copies, too. Buster Keaton tried unsuccessfully to hang himself in 'Hard Luck' (1921).

Yeah I think he might need more than just air from a bike pump after this ordeal!

I had a comment here that seems to have vanished. That happens to me a lot. TH-cam must be keeping a stern eye on me, but I cannot imagine why. I never leave anything negative or vulgar, it must be my socks or something.
I don't think you have posted about _Freaks_ from 1932. I also think Buster Keaton's _The Playhouse_ is exactly the type of film you enjoy the most, spectacular special effects for the silent era.

btw: Many of the films from the silent era may be found at the Internet Archive.
