    I know that puppies can't stay alone for long, but adult healthy dogs can stay for 9-10 hours at home (just not in total darkness!!) Yes, they can be bored, but hey, that's life! At least they don't have to work for terrible bosses, worry about the bills...or live on the streets; eating garbage, infested by ticks, getting hit by cars, like many poor dogs in poor countries...We spend whole weekends with them to compensate for their work days loneliness.

    If we lock the door he knows we are actually leaving. He jumps out of the area we have secured for him and he barks and shoulder checks the door. We wanted by our car to see what he would do. He did this for 10 minutes. Then I thought I better look up how to train our pup to stay home alone. We did everything that you had said in the video. We ended up taking us with and then he pooped twice in the house and peed. That's what he does when he gets mad.

    Hey, so I'm thinking about getting a Golden Retriever or Labrador puppy. We already have a cat at home, and I'm at school for 6 hours and my parents are at work for: 2-3 hours (mum) and 7 hours (dad).
    The cat should be safe with a puppy, but do you think that the cat *could* help with separation anxiety? I'm thinking about taking the puppy for a quick walk around the block every morning to help, and then spend around 1-2 hours after school with the puppy. Also, my mum will pop in after work to check on the puppy.
    My main preference would be these two breeds, but I understand if this mix won't work with all of the away-from-home. I also know that these two breeds particularly need human company.
    I apologise for all of this information, but I have so many questions! 😂

      Provide a safe haven for you little one. Such as small room or cage that is just for your dog where he can go to get away can make them feel much safer when needed. Encourage your dog to go to his safe place by bringing him there when he is about to be home alone.

It seems that he doesn't care to be alone and he is really chill and easy with this (we let him alone twice for just 15 minutes). Is it normal? • @Chewy
      @Chewy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're able to choose your schedule, we recommend not leaving your puppy at home for more than 1 hour for every month old they are, for example, if your puppy is 3 months, they shouldn't be left at home for more than 3 hours. Try finding classes that have a gap of time in between so that you're able to come home and walk your little one as needed.

    This is a great video my sister had two schnauzers and they are now good with classical music being on while they are gone , for me I’ll only have one dog which is a toy poodle my only thing is at night what about my sleep ? I have a feeling he will start winning and be loud specially living in apartment :/ I have seen they videos where you just put the crate near you by your bed and if they start acting up you can say a command word like “shh” and once they quiet down you can say “good boy” ?

    • @Chewy
      @Chewy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's lots of methods you can use to help calm your pet while they're in their crate. You can even put an old article of clothing that has your scent on it, so your pup feels like they have you close to them!

    • @Chewy

      Yes, these tips are great for all our canine companions. A great rule of thumb (or claw) is that for every month old your pup is, the same amount in hours is how long they can hold their bladder. We're here 24/7 and happy to help if you have any questions!

    I got a bichon frise puppy a week ago she is 2,5 months old and every morning we have to leave her home alone because my parents work and i have to go to school for 6 hours max. Do you think she is ever going to get used to it because i have seen that this breed has anxious seperation problems. What do you think?

    • @Chewy
      @Chewy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s crucial to gradually accustom a dog to being alone by starting with many short separations that do not produce anxiety and then gradually increasing the duration of the separations over many weeks of daily sessions.

      Boarding is always an option if you have a good place locally that'd be able to watch your pup at work. If you have a large enough crate or small room, you can always set it up with water, potty pads, toys, and blankets to keep your puppy in safe place with everything needed. I am fostering (soon to adopt hopefully) a 7-8 year old terrier mix. She seems to have a moderate(?) case of separation anxiety/isolation distress. I have a dog gate so she can’t go in my room. I have a dog bed and a crate that has blankets, a pillow I used to use quite often and one of my jackets. She also has toys she can play with. But she only seems interested in them when I’m nearby and clearly not leaving. She also whines when i leave or if I don’t give her attention. I work 10h days and can usually come home during lunch but there will be times I can’t. Do you have any tips?

    • @Chewy
      @Chewy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! Here's a list of tips that may help with your pups separation anxiety when you're getting ready to leave the house. Before you leave the house, take your dog for a walk. Also is this is the case, try not to make a big deal when you leave for the day or when you return. This way, you are communicating to your dog that the time apart is no big deal. It's just business as usual! Lastly, you can leave your dog with a good audiobook. Studies have now shown that audiobooks can have a calming effect on dogs and help to lessen their separation anxiety. The sound of a human voice can help reduce their stress while you're not at home. If we can help with anything else, please feel free to reach out. We're always here to lend a paw!

    • @nekoyorokusei
      @nekoyorokusei 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chewy.com Thank you so much! I will try the audiobook suggestion. I have my tv on a timer for about 3hrs; it plays soothing meditation type music, so I’ll have to find some good audiobooks.
      I do have one more question. She tends to freak out a little when it’s time for bed. I’ve tried to put her in her crate at random times in the day when I’m at home so she gets used to it; she’ll eventually calm down but she whines and fidgets when she can’t be near me or touch me. She also doesn’t sleep all the way through the night, like making sure I’m still nearby
      . I slept next to her crate last night and she did ok. I planned to gradually increase the distance as she gets used to it, but I was wondering if you had any suggestions?
      Seriously, thank you SO MUCH for replying, and so fast!

      You can definitely try leaving her for shorter periods of time to get her used to the idea on days that you don't have work. You can also try an interactive toy to help keep her paws busy while you're gone. If all else fails, you can definitely ask the shelter you adopted her from if she's had any traumatic experiences in her previous home(s) to better understand why she's behaving that way.

She uses the wee wee pads (sometimes misses) and seems to be doing OK. Don't really have a choice in leaving her home alone because I'm single. Any suggestions since there is a 14hr gap? Hi there Kweli! If you're able to have a neighbor, friend or dog walking service take your pup out for walks to breakup the day, that may help calm her crazies. Vigorous walks before and after you leave can also help get some energy out. Hey there, Rikki! You can absolutely look into a puppy daycare service, or a puppy-sitter for your extended time away.

    Hey.. I have a quick question. I am 15 years old. And since a few years I wanted a puppy so badly. The only problem is: Me and my sister go to school and my parents are working in the morning. I had the idea of getting the pup at the beginning of summerholidays. So we could interduce him to everything through these six weeks. Our biggest problem is that no one is home trough the morning when holidays are over. My Dad normally goes working at 9 or 10 and someone of us would be home at about 13:00 or 14:00 a clock. (We would walk and exercise him at the morning before we leave). So is it ok to leave the dog alone these few hours?
    Benjamin

    My dog chews up phone chargers and trash out of the trash can when I’m gone. I tried the crate, but she completely destroyed that. Any ideas of what I can do to get her to stop chewing on stuff? I don’t want to have to get rid of her

    So we only leave the dog alone on holidays/etc it's rare that nobody is home. He isn't too bad while gone but when we get back he does little tiny excitement pee when we (very calmly) greet him and immediately take him outside but a tiny bit always slips out. As soon as he sees someone he starts to leak. Any advice?

      Hey there, while we do always recommend seeing a veterinarian for a professional opinion, I did a little digging through the interwebs and found the following links, which you might find useful! 🙂🐾💙

      As pet parents we understand keeping a regular schedule with are little ones can be challenging but with time and practice of a normal schedule your pups should be just fine. We recommend keeping consistency with training your pet. We have our paws crossed for you and your little ones. 💙

    Will my puppy of 3 months get separation anxiety if left at home in a pen with toys for 6-7 hours? Please answer yes or no

    • @Chewy

      This really depends on the puppy. Toys and treats that will keep them busy is the best way to combat this.

    My 10 month old puppy poops in his crate every single time I leave the house and I've tried everything under the sun but he still does it. does anyone have any tips that go above what every internet page says?

    • @Chewy

      Hey there, sometimes a short walk before you have to step out can help encourage your little one to sue the restroom before they're placed in their crate.
