    From Emmy Award-winning executive producer and creator Seth MacFarlane (FAMILY GUY, “Ted,” “Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey”), THE ORVILLE is a live-action, one-hour space adventure series set 400 years in the future that follows The Orville, a mid-level exploratory spaceship. Its crew, both human and alien, face the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the familiar, often humorous problems of everyday life. The ensemble series stars MacFarlane as the ship’s Commanding Officer, Ed Mercer, and Adrianne Palicki (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Friday Night Lights”) as his ex-wife, Kelly Grayson, who’s assigned as his First Officer. Additional cast members include Penny Johnson Jerald as Dr. Claire Finn (“24,” “The Larry Sanders Show”), Scott Grimes as Gordon Malloy (“ER,” “Justified”), Peter Macon as Bortus (“Shameless,” “Bosch”), Halston Sage as Alara Kitan (“Neighbors,” “Goosebumps”), J. Lee as John LaMarr (FAMILY GUY, “The Cleveland Show”), Mark Jackson as Isaac (“That Royal Today”) and Chad L. Coleman as Klyden (“The Walking Dead,” “The Wire”). The Orville has been renewed for a second season.

    I love this episode because it’s such a wild thought experiment. An unstructured absolute democracy. It’s a system where the law is always 100% in sync with contemporary majoritarian views of right and wrong.
    Now obviously those of us who are used to laws written by legislatures and independent judiciaries that enforce the law in a predictable if not always fair manner find this idea crazy but billions of people live under systems where the law is neither enforced fairly or predictably as written and the government has little or no democratic legitimacy. The Chinese constitution guarantees religious freedom but even quoting it publicly will get you sent to prison.

      Exactly :)

    • @TheStapleGunKid
      @TheStapleGunKid 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Remember admiral Tucker ordered them to follow the planet's rules. So they can't do any illegal hacking. They had to work within the system, not rig it in their favor. But making up false stories to change people's minds about voting presumably isn't illegal.

    • @TheStapleGunKid
      @TheStapleGunKid 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The only thing the admiral said was that they had to abide by the Planet's rules. Taking Lysella to their ship wasn't illegal based on the planet's rules. They didn't kidnap her, she went willfully. As for the no contact policy, it was rendered moot the moment she saw Alara was an alien. They basically had made contact at that point, so using Lysella as an asset was the best thing to do.

    • @TheStapleGunKid
      @TheStapleGunKid 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Judging from Lysella's reaction to seeing Alara, it's pretty clear the deformity explanation wouldn't have worked. She seemed to know Alara was an alien the moment she saw her head features. Once she knew the truth, taking her to see their ship wasn't going to make things worse. That being said, their accidental contact with her could have some serious effects. I think it would be great if they did a follow-up episode later where they return to the planet to find it engulfed in Civil War, with Lysella leading a political faction dedicated to abolishing the up/down voting system, or at least reforming it so that the punishments aren't so brutal.

    This concept is a tad scary but let's be honest, a jury is a group of peers. If we all had to go to court we would want out peers to judge us, not some elitist corrupt judge and his paymasters. The method here though is harsh of course but the concept could work. Remove the power for the elites and hand it over the people, it just needed some tweaking so it's not out of control like this episode suggests.

    • @Tim85-y2q

    Actually this is not a bad idea. After all a crime is just an act that many individuals in society find unacceptable (aka a down vote). And rehabilitation occurs when the system (a group of experts in our world) believes that you have paid for your criminal acts to society and a early patrol occurs when you have been rehabilitated. So democratize both what act is a crime and how you have been rehabilitated.. and you get this system.
    True democracy in crime. You are judged by even one.
