The lyric translations on the official BTS music videos are from BigHit and are usually correct. They do their best to translate them in the most poetic way to make the lyrics flow as smoothly in English as they do in Korean. Doolset provides a more direct translation that is sometimes not as poetic, plus she provides historic and cultural context that international listeners might not be aware of.

So when you couldn't find the line poppin' pills, Doolset phrased it as doing drugs. It means the same thing, but popping' pills sounds a bit more like slang, a bit cooler.

12:30 😂 Dooset - is a fan made lyric site that gives lot of context solely for BTS lyrics.
Cause BTS has lots of complex meanings, worplay, hidden layers & meanings, etc. Which you probably already know since you've reacted to them before.
Doolset is literally named after BTS first written songs for fans called 2! 3!. Which is read as such.
The reason why Agust D is in Doolset, is because even though Agust D is a soloist, he's still Suga from BTS.
Agust D is literally DT Suga backwards. D T stands for Daegu Town where Suga came from & the name of his previous band.
Basically, Min Yoongi has 3 names.
    First is Suga of BTS
2nd is Gloss of Deagu Town
    & Lastly "Agust D" - whom is a soloist.
Also for better understanding of the MV and the song, you should better react to "Daewhita EXPLAINED" by DKDKTV or Daechwhita explanation video by Bookish theories.

Daechwita is a traditional Korean march, played for political events at the time of kings, army or king movements, etc. The two characters are Suga king and Sugar from the lower class. Ruler Suga is a tyrant who kills people who have grievances or are considered opponents.
Suga from the lower class, appears with six friends (BTS mention) and there is also a woman sitting in the tent, who gives him the car keys (Army mention). Poor Sugar starts the revolution by going with the car to face the tyrant Suga. We also see the drawing of Bang Si-hyuk, ('creator' of BTS), at the moment that poor Suga arrives by car to face the tyrant king.
He challenges the system. King Suga arrests and sentences poor Suga to death. And he, bound and kneeling, continues singing Daechwita (Daechwita being a song that is sung when the king is present. The people who were prostrate in the courtyard now agree with poor Suga, all nodding to the sound of Daechwita. Finally, the executioner who was supposed to kill poor Suga also joins the revolt, frees him and gives him a weapon, with which he kills the tyrant king. Metaphor: the lower class 'overthrowing the system', mentions BTS that started as a small group, discriminated against, from a small bankrupt company, which was despised and disdained, but which ended up becoming the biggest Korean group in kpop, true kings about the game. At the time of the dynasties there was a strong separation between social classes and slaves were considered nothing. The poor would never become part of the elite. Today BTS is the elite, but it was a difficult achievement, with a lot of 'blood, sweat and tears'. And who gave them the 'key' to start the revolution was the Army. BTS 'brought down' the dominant system of the Korean music industry, as they continue to do until now, breaking down the arrogance and prejudice of the world's music industry.

The DKDKTV breakdown of this is really good and gives a LOT historical and cultural context. Bookish Theory has another breakdown that gives additional context and symbolism. Keep in mind that when is comes to translations, not everything HAS a direct translation so the person will pick what they believe is the most likely comparable phrase or word. Also, all languages, just like English, use slang, euphemisms, and idioms that will not make sense if translated directly without first-hand knowledge of the primary language.
One example... In English, we'll say it'll cost you "and arm and a leg" which we understand means it'll cost you a lot of money, but not literally your arm and leg. The comparable phrase in Spanish translates to it'll cost you "an eye from your face". Same meaning, different words, and I'm sure there are similar types of phrases in all languages that MEAN it's expensive, but may not refer to body parts. All this to say... that Yoongi's exact words in Korean may not have been "popping pills" or the like, but whatever words he said in Korean, carry that same sentiment.

The translations on the official mvs aren’t Ytube’s translations, they’re done by the label. Sometimes they’re translated to flow more lyrically but they’re still pretty accurate. Doolset translations are great for background and context but I find them too literal and kind of awkward. I prefer the mv’s translations but will look at Doolset lyrics after if I want clarification on something.

    • @shockofthenew
      @shockofthenew 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yeah, I really appreciate DoolSet, understanding the literal meaning helps me get a clearer picture of the implications of the lyrics, but I like to compare multiple translations to get more of a sense of the overall feeling of the song, and figure out how the lyrics should really 'sound' in my head. Each translator brings something quite different, and actually seeing their different ways of interpreting the same lines gives a nice depth to my understanding as a listener... but of course unless you're a hardcore fan most people probably can't be bothered with all that!

Korean traditional military music, Daechwita (大吹打)
Daechwita is a music that was used as an accompaniment when the king came or the army marched in the Joseon Dynasty.
The name of the last gun that Suga shot was "Army"
    Colt army model 1860
Ps:The name ‘Agust D’ is the reverse of ‘DT Suga’ written in the lyrics. DT refers to Suga's hometown, Daegu, that is, D Town. He used the nickname "Suga" abbreviated as "Suga" as he was a basketball shooting guard.

  • @thetalantonx

Oh, awesome! So cool you finally got to experience this. Agust D is DT Suga backwards, Min Yoongi being from Daegu Town. Yoongi is best known as Suga from BTS. BTS Suga, Producer Suga, and Agust D all charted in the same year.
3:43 - The drum that the execution is taking place in front of is the way for the common people to request a redress of grievances. A commoner would go up and bang the drum until someone in power would come down and try to address the issue. By staging the executions here and displaying the heads in bagged boxes it's showing that the King is violating his side of the social contract.

In translation, there are reader-oriented translation and author-oriented translation. None is better than the other. They both have their own purpose.
The subtitles is a reader-oriented translation, whose aim is to recreate the experience of a Korean speaker listening to the original lyrics for an English speaker (or other languages) reading the subtitles. You'll notice that the translation here recreates the rhymes, the language register (more street talk), all while restricted by the time and space subtitles have to live in.
The doolset translation is an author-oriented translation, whose aim is to convey the meaning and form as close as the original as possible. You get notes about wordplay and cultural references, so that the target-language reader can understand the author's intention as much as possible.
Compare "Revenues keep going up-up-up-up-up-up and up" and "The revenue, nue, nue, nue, nue, nue, nue, that has never gone down". In the author-oriented translation faithfully repeats the final syllable of 매출 (sales), but due to the different sentence structure in English and Korean, this repetition goes in the middle of the line.
In the reader-oriented translation, the repeated syllable is at the end of the line, recreating the experience of the original lyrics (꺾인 적이 없는 매출출출출출출출). And repeating "up", a single-syllable word, sounds better than repeating "nue".
As a translator myself, I consider the subtitles for "Daechwita" an excellent translation. Getting translation to rhyme is a difficult undertaking and the translator manages to do that for the majority of the song.

DOOLSET is only a site for BTS though, you can't find any other artists there. Because no other groups have that much substance in their songs unlike BTS.
BTS' lyrics were so complex, multiple fans collaborated together and created the site to decode their songs as well as the culture reference, word plays, double meanings and context at that time it was written, which are very important to understand their songs fully.

It's not cheating getting explainations are the only way you get the non pg translations, doubles even triples, or the times they say one thing but sonically it sounds like something rude. Plus in the korean language a one word modifier can give a sentence multiple pertinent meanings. We fans like that unlike so many reactors you are not just seeing the peak of the iceberg. We love BTS because its not shallow. The songs DDAENG , BAEPSAE , and UGH cannot be understood without the explaination. For the fantastic BAEPSAE I reccomend you do the live in concert first and then we would like to watch you react to DKDKTV doing the explaination. Cannot wait for THAT reaction

Masquerade (2012) is awesome. You should watch it sometime. The "Rice Chest" reference is probably in reference to Crown Prince Sado, who you should probably wiki if you want to find out more about him... or you can just watch The Throne, a KMovie from 2015. A both horrible and tragic figure from the Joseon (Korean) royal court in the mid-1700's. Every time someone in a Kdrama or Kmovie says "rice chest" I immediately think of him.

Agust D aka Suga is one of the seven members of BTS.
BTS is a South Korean boy band consisting of three rappers and four vocalists. And all seven of them are excellent dancers.
They do a wide variety of music, but basically they are rooted in hip-hop.
All seven members are participating in making their songs by writing, composing, and producing them.
BTS started with a small company that almost went bankrupt, so they have been very looked down and hated by Korean broadcasting stations and other K-pop fandom. So they have struggled from the beginning to prove themselves.
Agust D aka Suga sold out all of his world tours and ended successfully last year, and he joined the army, last September 22. He is scheduled to be discharged from the military in June 2025.
All seven BTS members have entered military service, and the first member to start military service will be discharged in June 12 this year.
Due to their military duty, BTS briefly stopped working on a group they had been working on for eight years, and have been focusing on solo work for the past year.
They promised their fan base, ARMY that each of them will grow further through solo projects and come back together in 2025 after completing their military service. :)
Daechwita was a court music that announced a march for a king or army during the Joseon Dynasty, which existed in Korea for about 500 years. Suga incorporated it into his song.
This MV is the first part of a trilogy of music videos, 1st one is "Daechwita", then "Haegeum", the next is "AMYGDALA". Watching these music videos in order will help you understand. :)
The trilogy represents the process of Suga facing his trauma head-on and being freed from it.

Especially, I highly recommend EP.9, in which RM, the leader of BTS, hosts instead of Suga, and Suga attended as a guest to promote his album. :)

both the translation on the video and the website are BOTH correct. you can translate some things slightly different and have the same meaning example "popping pills" vs "doing drugs" mean the same thing one is slightly more specific but they mean the same. theres many cases like that when translating any language to english. the subtitles on the music videos are done by the label with the artists approval while the website is done by a korean fan who has been thanked by the group for helping international fans understand deeper meanings in bts's music. so even though they dont vet every translation they know of her existence and appreciate her giving context and helping. there was a point in time when bts did not have english subs on their music videos or other contents and fan translators were all we had to go on doolset being one of the first. bts have been a group since 2013. and have music dating back to 2007 for some members. all bts members write and produce their own music and all 7 members have solo music while still being in the group. so the solo music is at the same time not after a "breakup" bts have FULL creative freedom and they have enough respect for each other to lift each other up support each other and stay as a group working toegther. they even feature in each others solo music. bts do ALL genres and even more when theyre solo theyre NOT a kpop or pop group they do everything. if you have any more questions please ask hopefully i answered most of them here :)
also bts music is much deeper than most "pop" or "kpop" usually is. they do have fun poppy songs but majority of their music is deeper. they talk about mental health, politics, self love, empowerment, etc to name a few but id make this way too long if i tried to name every topic or genre theyve done in the last almost 11 years.

The "popping pills" thing is about rappers who uses the excuse that doing drugs helps them be creative, all that bs

Those lyric'ss are NOT youtube translations, those are the offficial lyric's through BTS company were they'll give us the meaning in the same poetic way Suga (aka Suga) wrote his Rap. The other one's are more direct translations that lose what he's meaning using his slang and his flow and metaphors. Go with the offficial lyrics on the MV. The other's are harder to understand as they use more literal translation so you get that 'Lost in Translation' thing happening.

Yoongi/Agust D is dissing the underground rappers that told him he was a girl for going the idol route and getting make up done. Hip hop/rap was about "LIFESTYLE" (machismo and drugs, girls, weapons; not only about writing good lines). One of the loudest back then dissing Suga and RM got jailed for substance abuse and assault in 2019. He never had a break through but at least he lived the lifestyle he thought was so important and Suga is making fun of him.

@@lotusnyt everything about this video song style and video combination is KOREAN not japanese. this is based in korean traditions not japanese. the background of the video is a korean dynasty not japanese. its based in the Joseon dynasty time period. this set is also used in many korean dramas and movies. again nothing about this video is japanese.

I'm not sure how much you know about Min YoonGi aka Suga/AugstD....but as you liked his MV then the following info might be of interest to you.
Suga/Agust D began writing music lyrics and working with MIDI at age 11 and held a part-time job composing and arranging music at a recording studio at age 16.
Active under the name "Gloss" (wordplay on his name YoonGi, which means "to shine") as an underground rapper in his hometown Daegu, He originally entered Big Hit Entertainment as a producer at age 17 and became the second member to join BTS..... At BTS debut in 2013 he was 20 y.o.... he is one of BTSs main producers/songwriters/composers and has over 150 song copyrights.... he also produces for other artists and has won awards for his work.... he is one of the fastest rappers in South Korea.
Suga (SHU-GA.... from Shooting Guard - the position he played in basketball) ...... AgustD = SUGA + DT (Daegu Town - his hometown) Spelt Backwards
Between his commitments as a member of BTS, Suga/Agust D took advantage of time on the plane and in hotel rooms after concerts to continuously produce, write and compose music.
In an interview for Grazia Korea, Suga/Agust D expressed a desire to release the music he wanted to do without having to consider popular appeal or music ranking. He intended to release his music for free in the form of a mixtape to avoid such considerations, commenting that an album "has a feeling of being trapped in some sort of framework" due to the need for company involvement in promotion and advertising. He has released 2 mixtapes - and last year released his first official album (of which he continues to maintain full creative control)
Developing Agust D musically on the base of hip hop, much of Agust D's inspiration for the lyrics came from his own stories of dream, youth, and reality. In order to differentiate his work from that of his work as Suga, he developed the alter ego "Agust D". He is best known for his honest hardhitting lyrics.
Bookish Theories TH-cam channel has really good explanations to BTS videos as there is a lot of cultural references and depth to this song that really will blow your mind
This is the first song in a trilogy..... He is a master storyteller.... a fellow army best explained the trilogy as -
Daechwita... ridding himself of the need to prove his worth to others
Haegeum... ridding himself of the confines of modern society
Amygdala... he investigates the inner demons and trauma that started his confinement in the first place.
Suga/AgustD wrote, composed and produced the songs, he conceptualised the MVs and had creative control (working as usual with Director Lumpens (Choi YongSeok) who does most BTS MVs)
    Fun facts -
The gun used was a Colt M 1860 ARMY
Daechwita is Traditional Joseon Korean Royal Parade/Military Music - notifying all that the king is here
Yoongi(Suga) is a member of the clan of the very last empress of Korea.
Daejanggeum Park is where the MV was filmed.... It is a giant film set that doubles as a public historical park where people can come to "experience" old times.
Hope you have a great day💜💜Sending Greetings from Australia
