Cheers you Magnificent Bastards! Im turning 21 today, but the bars have once again closed in Nevada. I had originally planned to go out and get a glass of a 21 year old single. Im just gonna have to settle for a bottle of Glendronach Parliament. Poor me. Thanks for helping on my whiskey adventure so far. I’ve mooched your knowledge to become a better man.
"What is it lieutenant Sebastian?" "It's just the Rebels, sir... they're here." "My God, man! Do they want tea?" "No, I think they're after something a bit more than that, sir. I don't know what it is, but they've brought a flag." "Damn, that's dash cunning of them."
Yes! I love Eddie Izzard! I keep forgetting you watch his other stuff, but Dress to Kill has got to be one of my favorites of all time. :D I've been quoting that show for like 20 years. (I don't remember when I saw it, but I was in high school, so 20 is close. ;) )
I have a bottle sitting on my shelves - and I can’t wait to compare it to the 12, 15 and 21. I only wish we could get ahold of the mezcal matured Dewars in the UK as well!
I liked the rum cask after adding ice. I know that knocks it under the 40% mark, and yes it thins it out, but that's where it brings out the sweet. I really wish the rum cask one was shooting more at 46% so the addition of ice helped keep the proof and bring the sweet. I just saw them release one finished in Mezcal casks and it's also 40. Of the Dewars 12 is my favorite with a bit of that light smoke and honeysuckle notes.
I was in Carrefour trying to decide between Dewars Caribbean Smooth and Four Roses. I almost bought the Dewars because it was on a 2 for 1 sale. Now I know why. Glad I went with the Four Roses.
So the metallic note on the finish - I'm a fan of rums, and I taste that similar note with a number of higher-end, especially higher proof rums. I get that (and a whole lot more) on the Balcones Texas Rum (cask strength) and on the Appleton 12 Rare Cask. I get a brief hint of it on the Treaty Oak Rum, and it's waaaaaay way in the back on younger, sweeter rums (where fruit and sugar notes dominate). Just my 2-1/2 cents. :)
I've been binge watching you two and I finally figured out the chemistry. Martin/Lewis. You guys are probably to young to remember that duo but anyway thanks for all the great information. Much appreciated.
Hmmm would part of the finish problem be attributed to the lowering the proof🤔? My neighbor and I tried this and completely agree with you guys, especially compared to our other fave non peated blended scotch
Just picked up a bottle of this because Dewars white was my first foray into scotch. Haven't opened it yet, but I'm excited to see what to look forward to
I've had this and I like it. It's not great but I didn't find it off putting like the guys seem to. I'll have to taste it again now that I have gotten into the stronger Islay scotches and I really love those. My perception of it may change now that I'm sure my pallet has changed with my growth in whiskey knowledge and taste.
The Dewar white is my prefered cheap pick (especially when I am feeling sick and need something to get me back on my feet.) I got a carribean cask as a small gift when buying a whitelable (this was september 2022) and the description that I sent to my best friend was the carribean cask tasted like vodka mixed with honey. It just taste like a sweet slightly herbatious vodka
a common misconception is that rum is sweet because its made from sugar cane/molasses but due to the conversion of sugars to alcohol and distillation it can be an incredibly dry spirit (especially if you add tannins due to Caribbean aging in the mix). Some rums are sweet but in my experience that's mostly fruitiness like Jamaican rums. Other rums like Ron Zacapa 23 (let's not talk about the number..) are sweet due to dosing, added sugars after the fact. But I guess you shouldn't expect rum casks to add a sweet finish even if rums are often sweet, due to those added sugars.. Would be interesting if they mentioned from what distillery the rum came due to different rules and regulations on the Caribbean islands.
The TD rum cask is a very nice whisky for the money, so go ahead and try it. The lighter, triple-distilled TD seems to be a better match for the rum notes.
this was the first time I had an unopened untried bottle of Scotch sitting there on my shelf that you happened to be reviewing. I pretty much agree. I don't think the end of it is as bad as you say but that's just me. you are right though the finish is what makes it something I'm probably not going to buy again. I don't hate it but don't really like it either. if I was with a friend and they had it and offered me a sip I'd drink it
Teeling Small Batch (Irish) and Balvenie Caribbean Cask (Scotch) are both great rum finished whiskies. Considering how much I really liked Dewars 12 Year Old, it's disappointing this didn't work out so well.
I just tried this today. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it. I thought it’s nice for the price point of $25. When nosing it, I thought it was really hard to get anything from the nose. Had to dig deep for it. But the mouth felt nice. I give it a 3.5 out of 5.
Is there a chance that the rum cask finish would be improved by making a mixed drink? I've seen this before but never was curious enough to buy a whole bottle.
Wanted to ask, we get alot of whisk(e)ys finished in other barrels e.g rum, wine are their other spirits like rum or anything else that are finished in whisk(e)y barrels??
I really enjoy a smokey scotch Highball on a hot day or just for a refreshing drink. do you ever enjoy a whiskey highball ( whiskey + soda water)? Can we do a Whiskey Highball episode? from the crowd sourced favorite whiskey to figure out the favorite highball and ratio to use for a hot summer day.
I'm assuming these big distilleries will make a very small batch first when attempting new things? Or do they just dump millions of gallons of whiskey into rum barrels and sell it crossing their fingers that the end product is good???
And Balvenie has the excellent 14 year Caribbean finished in rum casks. On the cheaper end Glenlivet just released a Caribbean reserve finished in a rum cask. I picked up for about 30 bucks...nowhere near as good as the Balvenie but light and nice in the summer.
I've been working my way through all of the Whiskey Vault episodes in chronological order, just finished watching the "How to Mooch the $7000 Whiskey" episode,,,,, My only thought is "I want some of whatever it is they were drinking/smoking when they came up with this to take to the office, and pass out to everyone, because it would be the most amusing day at work ever"
I could be way off, but I wonder if it could be a Jamaican rum cask. Jamaica is known for having a rotten banana funk, which some love, and others find revolting, and compare it to rotting meat or a gamey-ness. Just based on the "blood" note, mostly. Maybe that's how it's presenting in the scotch?
it almost tastes like if you took a version of Jameson distilled it in a pot still with blood and a bag of copper filings then aged it in a vanilla flavored rum
Metal oil? Please introduce me to this new material. It seems like such a cool thing. Also, blood tastes like copper? Me thinks you have had some very 'unique' experiences... As usually blood has an iron taste... Lol Gotta do the ball busting my friends. Entertaining/informing videos as always sirs
You two always espouse "the whisk(e)y you like the way you like it, so I'll share. I've become a HUGE fan on a 50/50 blend of Ardbeg 10 year and Whistler oloroso finished Irish. So sue me.
Daniel (ye dingus), iron is the dominant metal associated with blood, not copper. Unless you've been licking pot stills daily for the last 15 years, in which case you should see a doctor.
sorry for necroposting, but vanilla is imparted by oak itself. it would be odd and noticeable NOT to taste vanilla in smth aged in oak for a considerable time
I haven't sampled a good rum finish yet. Kura in particular was one of the worst whiskeys I've had to date. Interesting premise, but I'd be curious if it's ever actually worked.
Don’t think I will be buying this whisky. I find the standard White Label has a ‘baby sick’ note from the young grain whiskies in the blend, and this rum cask version doesn’t seem to be an improvement.
5:22 There WILL BE Blood. POOOUURRR, Daniel! Pour, you som! I'm so sorry. Here, if you have glencairn. And I have a glencairn, and I have a straw - there it is, watch it. Eddie Izzard references are my favorite. Keep them up Daniel. No flag no country, can't have one.
Not even for strategic sheep purposes?
Daniel is an undercover European for sure.
These guys just have a fun chill dynamic and give off positive vibes.
Much love from KCMO
Much love from KCKS as well!

I got the Glenlivet version this weekend, still haven't tried it yet but it definitely intrigued me enough to get it.

Daniel - human blood is based on iron - Vulcan blood is based on copper. Rex - you are next-level when it comes to cheating.
I would love to see Rex rocking the Daniel look!
Yes! I got this one about a month ago for not much money and loved it. Glad to hear y'all s perspective ^-^

The British pronunciation "lef-tenant" just sells that joke, too.
2:20 That Eddie Izzard reference made my day!
I have a bottle sitting on my shelves - and I can’t wait to compare it to the 12, 15 and 21. I only wish we could get ahold of the mezcal matured Dewars in the UK as well!
I had the Mezcal one in May and actually liked it.
I liked the rum cask after adding ice. I know that knocks it under the 40% mark, and yes it thins it out, but that's where it brings out the sweet. I really wish the rum cask one was shooting more at 46% so the addition of ice helped keep the proof and bring the sweet. I just saw them release one finished in Mezcal casks and it's also 40. how do I know if im not drinking fake rebottled Chinese whiskey?
*Thank you for finally doing something that is available. Based on this review I made the right decision on not buying it!*
Yes!
I was in Carrefour trying to decide between Dewars Caribbean Smooth and Four Roses. I almost bought the Dewars because it was on a 2 for 1 sale. Now I know why. Glad I went with the Four Roses.
I bought a bottle of this yesterday. I quite like it. I also enjoy the Dewar;s 8 year old. Nice whiskies for not much money.
If you were taking a shot for each clap and you made it to the one minute mark, go ahead and hit that subscribe button.
Another fan of Flannel Daddy Garand Thumb?

1:02 guess we now know who did the outro laugh in Thriller by Michael Jackson

Just picked up a bottle of this because Dewars white was my first foray into scotch. Haven't opened it yet, but I'm excited to see what to look forward to
My first was also Dewar's... but Honey. I had to ease in. xD I haven't had it in ages now, but I really liked it at the time.
Just bought this in the Philippines 940 pesos 750ml. Excited to try.
I've had this and I like it. It's not great but I didn't find it off putting like the guys seem to. Now, I really want to compare this to the Tullamore DEW XO Caribbean rum cask finish :D
The TD rum cask is a very nice whisky for the money, so go ahead and try it. The lighter, triple-distilled TD seems to be a better match for the rum notes.
Dammit! I just made a comment with that point!
I got straight up "pineapple upside down cake" from the Tullamore rum cask. Ruined it for me.

Us: We're going to start doing videos on Bottom Shelf (sub 30$) whiskeys
Vault: Starts doing a lot of sub 30$ whiskeys
Cheers!
You can thank the rush of MB’s that started sending bottom shelf :)
@@danielwhittington826 those cheap bastards. Haha.
@@ThriftyWhiskey YES! Daniel! Can we start getting callouts for Cheap Bastards!? That would be awesome! They would totally be my people. :)
@@danielwhittington826 I think they're trying to hit the Patron and Titan goals without going bankrupt.
My rule of thumb for budget, is don't go 40% ABV ever. At least a higher ABV does a much better masking job.
I loved it actually...was a great blend for the money
I wish I could get Cotswold in North Texas. I’ve tried one and it’s brilliant.
Do you think maybe a higher end blend or single malt would've held up better to a Caribbean rum cask finish?
Teeling Small Batch (Irish) and Balvenie Caribbean Cask (Scotch) are both great rum finished whiskies. Considering how much I really liked Dewars 12 Year Old, it's disappointing this didn't work out so well.

I strongly prefer the Balvenie Caribbean Cask but it's 3 or 4 times the price point.
Are there any others in between that people like?
The dinging of the glasses on the bottle for patron saint turned you guys into the campest campinologists on youtube
What rums do y’all enjoy?
Way to go gents ! Hope things improve in your fine state of Texas. I would love to visit and hang out with you guys enjoying some cigars and bourbon
Is there a chance that the rum cask finish would be improved by making a mixed drink? I've seen this before but never was curious enough to buy a whole bottle.
Probably be best, tho I cringe at the thought of scotch whiskey diluted by more then an ice cube or drops of water 😬
Wanted to ask, we get alot of whisk(e)ys finished in other barrels e.g rum, wine are their other spirits like rum or anything else that are finished in whisk(e)y barrels??
Been hoping you guys would review this. Hoping to find it in Australia one day.
Personally I find this blend really nice.
how do I know if im not drinking fake rebottled Chinese whiskey?
Balvenie 14 caribbean cask next?
so is this conversation foreshadowing in the story arc or the mooch and the somm? daniel is going to become rex, and rex is going to become daniel?

sounds perfect for a whiskey tribe video, and they just did that one about bourbons on ice so a whiskey highball is close enough to on topic lol
I'm a bourbon drinker and I enjoy Dewars Rum Cask quite a bit!
Tasting Irish? Please note the similarity in the label design to the Tullamore Caribbean cask (that you already reviewed).
I'm assuming these big distilleries will make a very small batch first when attempting new things? Or do they just dump millions of gallons of whiskey into rum barrels and sell it crossing their fingers that the end product is good???
I've read somewheres that they used Bicardi casks
Angel's Envy rye is finished in rum casks and it's fantastic. I wonder what went wrong here...
And Balvenie has the excellent 14 year Caribbean finished in rum casks. On the cheaper end Glenlivet just released a Caribbean reserve finished in a rum cask. I picked up for about 30 bucks...nowhere near as good as the Balvenie but light and nice in the summer.

How in the heck does Dan walk straight to a particular bottle in there???
This video he used the Dewars Decimal System... I’ll show myself out.
Eddie Izzard reference, hell yeah!
Haven't tried the Dewar's but The Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve is good.
So the technical term for this review is "meh". As usual great video. Cheers!
Oops......back to lockdown so by default Skullet returns?
Looks like Balvenie has some more competition in the space to contest their 14 caribbean cask offering.
That describes exactly how I feel about Maker's 46.
Yes! For whatever reason I enjoy original makers or barrel strength way more then the 46 but I seem to be the minority 🤔
@@JazznRealHipHop It tastes OK on the palate but the finish is just horrible.
here in Trinidad and Tobago, scotch is almost as popular as Rum.......we usually mix it with coconut water!!!!
Synopsis review: no happy ending with this one. Dewar? I don't even know her!
Caribbean Rum adds a glorious nose to Irish whiskey, I've never had the effect it has on scotch.
Dewars white label was my dad's go to.
Should have compared it to Tullamore Dew XO Rum Cask to see who finished it better
Excellent Izzard reference.

8€ here in my street supermarket (I guess nobody is buying this, not even as a hand sanitizer🧴🤲...)

Balvenie Caribbean Cask is the one.
When you notice the dolhin coming out of Rex's butt durning the Parton Saint footage...😳😳😳
But was it smooth? 'Carribean smooth'?🤔

The problem with these rum cask releases is they never say what country it came from so it could be imparting any kind of flavor.
