Oud wood is one of my signature scents. I'm on my 3rd 100ml bottle. It's absolutely stunning. I don't seem to have performance issues with it. 7-8 hours respectively. With about 6-8 sprays. I can smell it on my clothing 3-4 days later when I do my laundry. The older batches lasted longer, 10-12 hours, I have some decants of the older batches and I save them for special occasions.
I do think people go nose blind to it and those are the people that think it doesn't last. I can wear it all day and when I come home, my wife can still smell it on me. Tom ford atomizers don't spray as much as a dior atomizer, so even at 6-8 sprays, you're probably not wearing as much as 4 sprays of any dior. Keep that in mind when judging the performance

    • @snowliferwb
      @snowliferwb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@HigherScents what? 6-8 sprays of oud wood in volume isn't very much actually. It's less than 4 sprays from any dior bottle, nishane, mfk The atomizer on tom fords don't produce much in comparison. About half the amount. So 6-8 sprays is the equivalent of 3-4 sprays of something like dior or MFK.

I consider perfumery an art form in the same vein as a painter, chef, sculpter etc. So for another party to create their version of a hugely successful piece of art whatever it is is pretty inevitable. We see it in almost everything in life. A simple example I have given in the past is grocery shopping. A chef at Mctvities created the hob nob,, since then every single supermarket has copied and created their own version and some are better then others and by and large they are cheaper than the original (sound familiar). If you think about it what successful product has not been copied in some way across any industry? So I don't worry too much about it,, if a fragrance is fantastic it will continue to sell and a few "inspired by" releases may even increase the desirability of the original. So, it should not happen but it does and will never stop. Lasltly I have a 10ml of Guapo, great fragrance. I also like watching your very unique style of reviewing... Lyric man smelling like bubble bath was a good one for me,, i thought it was just me that felt that way. 😁

Perfume is a different kind of art because an artist can use contrast of beauty and ugliness to create strong emotions in us but perfume is only beauty and the pursuit of beauty it’s as we call it in french un acte d’esthète it’s about aesthetic…

      @gazzap6664 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@zenttofrizzy8479 disagree... there are countless examples where a generally iunpleasant note is used with other notes to create something that challenges our noses. Dont know what "diffetent kind of art means"? Different from what and how are you defining the normal in art? It takes years of traoning and a fair dose of talent to create something beautiful in perfimery as it does in painting, cookery, carpentry and pretty much all artisanal persuits as I said. 😁.

I'd buy the inspired- by ones to try on my skin and to wear for extended periods, then I'd go to a shop and spray the real thing to compare side by side, then I'd buy the original expensive one if I liked it

When a large perfume company is taking on someone else's creation that tells me there is a lack of creativity with their perfumers, if you can't come up with your own creation you should not be a perfumer in my opinion. Hi Aaron,
It used to be stronger in the gold label bottles, I own a 2007 and 2012 bottle. I also had a 2014 one that I didn't like that much but aging is a thing with Oud Wood, to me the newer ones have a strong anise accord that gives it a rubbery smell, that smoothens out when aged.

Hola Aaron.

The company is Fragrance du bois and the scent is Oud Noir. Basically oud wood twisted as it happens with Tiziana Terenzi 'Ursa' with Straight to Heaven by Killian. Imho this is really bad this ruins the fragance world so much because people start thinking if big houses copy other houses with no shame charging the price up, what's wrong with clone houses? The basically do the same and charge less.

Great review. I just received a new bottle from Aug 2021 batch that appears to be one the first since the lilial removal reformulation, as butylphenyl methylproprianol is no longer a listed ingredient like it was earlier in the year. I noticed the addition of tocopherol to the ingredients as well. Not sure if either of these changes will have much impact, but we'll see. Smells great either way. I have a few Creed's that were post-lilial removal as well, and everything seems to be good with them, so I assume the perfume industry has found a suitable replacement.

They discontinued most of the cosmetic products like Body Wash, Deodorant, etc. Which is kind of a shame. I do have an original Oud Wood vintage bottle and it's not really different in my opinion. Universally people always say any newer vintage of any perfume is weaker regardless of brand. I don't know if this is a psychosematic thing, or that fragrances that have longer to age get stronger over time, or what. What's your take, Aaron? I'm sure people will eventually start saying your older bottles are stronger, better, etc. despite formulations staying stable.

First off, I'd like to say that I love this review, and your reviews in general. It offers an unique perspective you can hardly find nowadays, when you're not interested in the typical "Get those 5 to drop panties on Friday night".
Regarding the scent, it was one of go to fragrances, even when staying at home and I just wanted to appreciate a masterfully blended perfume. I do think that the old bottles with the golden label used to have much better performance. The time I bought this fragrance was in mid 2021, and to be quite honest, the performance is insulting, especially for the asking price that keeps getting higher and higher.
I'll always appreciate master perfumery and the art of blending something this good, but nowadays I feel that whenever I'm paying for Tom Ford, I'm paying for marketing, not perfumery.
    It's disappointing.

TF Oud Wood’s performance is hit or miss on my skin. Sometimes it is present well into the 8-10hr range, but sometimes it disappears within the 3-4hr range. Projection however is consistent where it stays within an arm’s length throughout. Got my 100ml bottle 2yrs ago.
About other perfume houses releasing their own version or interpretation of Oud Wood.. Just as all designers have their own version of Chanel’s LBD (little black dress); a simple non colourful, non extravagant high-end black designer dress. It was so iconic in women’s fashion back then that it created its own category of dresses as more and more designers released their own version of the LBD. TF’s Oud Wood is to fragrances as Chanel’s LBD is to fashion. Both icons! Lol
To me, Oud Wood is the perfume industry standard for ‘the non-animalic western designery oudy fragrance’ or at least it should be! Lol so I’m fine with other houses releasing their version of Oud Wood.
Considering the amount of designer and niche perfumes released bearing close resemblance to Oud Wood, does this not show how widely appreciated Oud Wood is? I mean even if it were to get to Creed Aventus’s breadth of inspirations and copies, at least that also means more noses will get to appreciate and experience the brilliance of Oud Wood for themselves.
Imagine if the Oud Wood scent becomes mainstream.. imagine diversifying the predominantly blue, sweet clubbing, and musky floral types of mainstream scents with Oud Wood? Yes please! Lol

I actually have a dupe of Oud wood from a company called perfume parlour based in Leicester. It’s £12-15 for 50ml and lasts well over 10-12hrs on me. Smells bang on too. I prefer to buy the real deal on fragrances but when dupes last longer and are cheaper sometimes I wonder why they can do it

I have the same one and it's like 95% the same. Something missing but honestly that's only if you look for it. And yeah it seems to last quite a bit longer

I've never had issues with oud wood. It lasts 12+ hrs on me with noticeable projection. If I use it at night I will easily smell it on me the next day.

“Contains one of the most expensive ingredients in the perfumers Arsenal”? Or “here you will find this accord”? This sounds contradictory. Thank you Aaron for providing the actual oud percentage in your products instead of trying to confuse us with clever wording🦄

Oud wood was never beast but it definitely was stronger 10 years ago when I first tried it. Shame how weak it is considering the hike in price. This is one instance where I will buy the Clone/Dupe because many of them are identical for a fraction of the price. Otherwise I really don't support clones

Tbh in my experience in 2024, Oud Wood has decent performance by my standards. It's the perfect strength for the office.
I bought mine from Nordstrom though, it's possible the people saying it has performance issues bought counterfeit bottles.
It's so amazingly beautiful and despite being so absurdly expensive I'm yet to find an "inspired" fragrance that comes close to the same blend quality AND wonderful scent profile.
I have to say, Fucking Fabulous is my signature scent, but I can't deny that Oud Wood is objectively so much more of a masterpiece than FF.

I know ATH is only a fan of clones when they resurrect discontinued frags, but in this case, Maison Alhambra's Woody Oud is borderline identical to TF Oud Wood AND it actually outperforms the TF by a MILE, at least the current formulations, anyways. I'd suppose that, by ATH's reasoning, then, TF Oud Wood has no real oud in it, as Woody Oud is WORLD'S better than Oud Wood, and it's not even close. If someone gifted me a bottle of the real thing, I'd sell it for the cash and just buy another $20 bottle of Woody Oud.

If the dupe is as close as the original and some times even better why spend more. For instance Oud for Greatness and Oud for Glory,
And for this particular review I have Al haramain platinum Oud instead of Oud wood.

You should have tried the GOLD private label version from 2009, I was so upset when they brought out this(black/silver bottle) version a few years ago...smelling this one the oud is SO synthetic and disappointing, little power and longevity of the original and in true Tom Ford style, the price goes up up up. The original was beast mode and I don't understand why it changed :(

Oud Wood was a purchase I was very excited about, I’ve loved several other TF fragrances, and I thought this one would be awesome too, so I blind-bought it, terrible mistake!! It smells nice… for about 30 minutes. I bought this from a full price retailer that is a TF distributor, do not a knock-off or a fake. It absolutely is one of the worst performing fragrances in my wardrobe. I’ve had friends use it so I could see if it was just my body chemistry. Nope. It’s just a terrible performer. It’s absolutely dead and gone in two hours.
Worst $250 I’ve ever spent. Ruined me on TF.

I think art draws inspiration from art always. Perfumers offering their take on a quality perfume is the beautiful thing about art. But when its no longer about offering your take - instead about cloning twisting and upselling, attempting to capitalize on popular demand, it loses its beauty. Common among these large companies it does seem

Love your attitude and reviews. Lovely to hear all the chemistry behind the perfumery. Your products are also stellar. Very impressive. I know you used to struggle with videos. Barely noticeable scent especially for the price one has to pay. Performance and projection are totally lacking unless using like 30 sprays. Luxurious? Maybe. But get a sample first and give it a full wear.

For a famous house to copy and slightly reformulate a popular niche fragrance and charge as much or more is reprehensible. I do have more respect for clone houses who copy a scent "and does it well" and admits it so they then can bring said fragrance to the average man/woman who will be able to afford it.
