After bearing the brunt of public anger and international criticism over the 2019 protests, Chief Executive Carrie Lam now says she is “steeled” to meet any challenges as she spearheads sweeping changes in Hong Kong. In the fifth episode of Talking Post with SCMP chief news editor Yonden Lhatoo, Lam addresses concerns about where she is taking Hong Kong and defends her contentious legacy. Lam also won’t reveal whether she will seek a second term, though she does not sound like someone who is bowing out.

That part about the one country two systems around 5:40 speaks a lot about the bias in anti china media. They always say China has broken the promise of keeping the one country two systems law by emphasizing the "two systems" part; never the "one country" part.

    • @canto_v12

I always say, you can't prove that China broke any of the conditions of the Sino-British Joint Declaration. The document was intentionally vaguely written, so that governance could be flexible as the times change. Besides, the Basic Law is the final product and the legally binding document, not the 1984 declaration. The Declaration was fulfilled in 1997 with the BL's introduction as the new Constitution of the HKSAR.

Hong Kong is dying actually, businesses are leaving the City to relocate in China. 'In two three years we have flats in Kwu Tong.' It takes at least 10 years for land approval then it takes 10 years to build due to sewage pipes and road planning etc. I call BS on the 2-3 year schedule. Meanwhile they approve the building of 88sq ft flats (which no one will buy.) Most of her answers use minor deflections. 'It's a question of quantity and quality if we go for a very spacious unit requirement, we will build less' (You mean you build less inhumane towers. However, humane apartments can go up 40 floors where the surface area remains the same though-out each floor, not like single village houses. Also, yes 200sq ft is inhumane, she didn't bother to answer that one.) This is just a silly interview to improve her image before her reappointment. Beijing had to force these developers to handover the horded land in the New Territories to build the 15,000 transitional units. They are unwilling to change to make the lives of the younger generation better. Judging by the views no-one cares about her or her corrupt admin profiting over people's misery. Here she is praising these developers in order to get reappointed by the 0.2%. Yonden had to cut the interview, waste of time.

Not entirely true. I watch an estate being built in front of my building in less than 2 years in Shatin. Houses are built at a much faster rate now. Also, there are businesses leaving. But there are also many more ppl moving into Hong Kong from China bringing in new economic demands. The hk population will continue to expand. Just look at the rebuilding of Kai Tak area. That’s a 100 billion dollar project. On the other hand, London, NY (places that I used to live ) are on a much faster decline and I don’t see any prospect of a big economic leap potential there.

There's no shortage of brains in China. Plus, HK covid management surpasses any major cosmopolitan city in the world. By contrast, London, NY, LA , SF are facing a much worse covid-economic-downturn. You're here because you are paid to be.
Only a cuck shill could actually celebrate people being disenfranchised of their say in the way they are governed.
Irrespective of whether you support a particular politician or not, its truly pathetic you'd cheer for your own inability to have a say.
And this particular politician managed to galvanize both the pro establishment and pan dems for once in agreeing on one thing - how utterly inept she was and central to the disaster which befel us in 2019.
There is a lot of blame to go around, and the radical protesters/rioters and the extremists within the pan dems who who cheer lead them absolutely shoulder heavy responsibility, but so does Lam who is supposed to be the leader, she's CE after all, and this was her own assessment of her job performance in her own words.
Back of course before she got amnesia and decided to engage in some serious revisionist history :
And I quote "I don't want to spend your time, or waste your time, for you to ask me what went wrong, and why it went wrong. But for a chief executive to have caused this huge havoc to Hong Kong is unforgivable. It's just unforgivable"

As someone with family from HK.
Hong Kong people like to think they aren’t Chinese since they were subjects of Britain for 200 years and think they are better then mainlanders since their economy boomed while HK was used as the main trading hub of China. In essence, they look down on the mainland. But now, the mainland’s economic boom came 30 years ago and HK is becoming more irrelevant with China becoming the major power in the region with cities surpassing HK like Shenzhen right across the border from HK.
Lastly, the political system that was used to subject HK citizens to British rule was left behind and used to continue to create this divide between the HK and the mainland.
Also doesnt help when HK schools teach the youth anti-China stories

    • @canto_v12

Let me try to help...throughout colonial history, Macau wasn't really very well governed. Portugal didn't quite know what to do with it, so they were happy to give it back and China had started staffing up the Macau government decades before the actual handover! When Macau returned to China, public order improved dramatically and the economy took off due to liberalisation of the gambling industry. Macau and Hong Kong were in very different states upon their return. Hong Kong worries about its own downfall from its peak of influence in the colonial era. Macanese view it as "the bad old days," and people never really spoke any Portuguese in daily life, not even in the colonial era.
That's why Macau is happier than HK under China--they had very different starting points.
Ironically, Macau has done a much better job preserving colonial architecture than Hong Kong.

Basic human nature from evolutionary point of view, particularly for those in power, why don't you ask why the US refocus 90% of its foreign policy toward China ? To be fair, China opens to the US companies and products in a more rational way than what the US leadership is doing. The Us doesn't have a clear strategy to contain China and status quo once start to be tipped then world will go on a roller coaster ride for next ten years. But since Carrie Lam’s term is not done I will wait for the end of her term to judge. If she makes great progress in housing, she may redeem herself.

Carrie Lam is possibly the strongest female leader I've ever known.
I'm glad there are rational, patriotic people like her in HK. I know that a large number of HK people have a positive outlook on the motherland. It's always the dissidents that scream the loudest and therefore appear to be in the majority. Once the benefits of the central government's influence becomes apparent over the next decade the disgraceful riots of 2019 will become an important lesson of the past. Specifically how dangerous it is to allow foreign forces to fester unrestrained and poison the minds of the youth through lies and propaganda.
