try picking him up and using 2 fingers either side of his head. You'll find they'll relax so much that they fall asleep. You'll also notice a strange shivering, it's normal - it's how they purr.
I have Degu who fall asleep when I do a similar thing hoping the gerbils I got a few days ago will get to that point, they were rescues but are already super friendly with me.

Omg so adorable, looks just like my gerbil Buddy, I really want to hand tame him and his brother Sparky until they are this comfortable with being petted! 💖 They will stand and walk on my hands sometimes, especially if treats are involved, but then other times they'll just go all timid and run/speedwalk away, even when I move really slowly to try and pet them.
You don't exactly have to tame it, just take them out of their cage a lot and hold them. Get them to where they can trust you. When I got my gerbils, they didn't need to be tame. They just got to know me, and then I started petting them. Hoped this helped ;)
I would say though that it is imperative to get one that opens upfront too like here in the vid and would not advise to get the ones that only open on the top (unless its an aquarium). Gerbils tend to fear the big Hand of God coming from above whereas here they can hop out and gain trust swiftly.

When I took him the other gerbils that I already owned didn't want him with them, they were always biting the poor thing. So I put him in a new cage and he was alone there for a little while and I was always playing with him and petting him, since he was alone :P A month later I put the least aggressive of the other gerbils with him and that seemed to work out well. Two years have passed but he still likes to be petted :) The other gerbils that I own are not so nice, they always bite me, even when I feed them. Guess this guy is just different :D

Yep. Their whole body vibrates. They have to be extremely relaxed and trusting for them to do that. I love it when it happens.
