      Engineering Explained can you do a video on whether or not fuel is sent into the cylinder while coasting in gear, off the throttle. And if so, how much fuel? I can’t find a clear, decisive answer. Thanks!! Love the videos.

      Engineering Explained
      I made a HHO discovery a couple of days ago. It has a much more efficient use of electricity. Saving fuel for all whom want to try it.
      The parts needed are two HHO cells wet or dry. Tubing, robust electrical connections, extra car battery is optional, flash arrestor, bubbler
      If you want to do a video on it? Then let me know, as I live near Preston.

      As you say at the end, cool that they have done it in a production car with a warranty. Having been involved in rallying, antilag isn't a new concept, but a rally car isn't under a new car warranty and can have a new turbo fitted every event as required.
      Cool tech for a road car and a brave move by Hyundai.

      What additional stress is this on the engine? Pistons, pins, rods, bearings?

    • @brockduffy8729
      @brockduffy8729 6 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Will Whiteside I wouldn't say too much wear on the internal of the engine since it's designed for combustion on the downstroke of the piston, but for sure your stressing the exhaust and turbo because a bit of the combustion is happening outside the cylinders.

    • @brockduffy8729
      @brockduffy8729 6 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Will Whiteside basically just a more violent way to keep the turbo spoiled while off throttle, so the wear will be turbo, and probably the cat, not so much the engine its self.

    • @DENicholsAutoBravado

      Brock Duffy good thinking here from everybody. I'd like to add that when you let off the gas exhaust normally turns extremely lean. That's actually harder on a catalytic converter rather than easier. I think that this, if not to extreme could actually protect the catalytic converter from these lean times.
      I agree it pushes the turbo more, but hey, when you ask for that mode to be on you don't want the turbo spooled down. 👍

      This antilag system sounds a lot less aggressive than others, I'm sure the engineers took extra wear into account. Doesn't quite sound like gunfire like aftermarket setups do

    • @user-hw2bb9jy5l
      @user-hw2bb9jy5l 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fernde09 this also has to do this it being a production vehicle and having to pass epa regulations. Most vehicles that have an anti lag system installed are most likely decatted with maybe a secondary cat based on emissions in their area.

      alex zoidberg engineers had surely been concerned with the material selection for manifold, turbine housing and wheel, and the degrees after TDC are not the same as what heavy motorsport applications use to...so I'll be fine with this 😉

    I am so glad you explained this Jason! A lot of people upload crap to TH-cam with misleading titles and descriptions regarding to supposed anti lag sounds from cars which turns out it is usually just some pops from the exaust. Besides, I consider this as a big and necessary step forward in road performance cars, no manufacturer did this before, although it has been used in rally cars since the late 80s... Many people out there saying turbo lag is nice... I can tell none of them have ever felt the difference between antilag activated and deactivated. Jesus Christ... GrA Evo's and Imprezas run damn fast with that thing!!! And they sound wonderful!

  • @b0bsaget007
    @b0bsaget007 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My car has a different anti-lag system, called no-lift shifting (NLS). Basically, when you're at 100% throttle and the engine is revving high enough, you can change gears while holding the throttle pedal down and the ECM will rapidly blip the throttle to maintain engine and turbo speed, so that once you're in the next gear the turbo is already at max boost, thus there is no lag.

    When I was able to ride and had carbureted motorcycles, we would shut off the ignition, wack the the throttle, and then flip the ignition back on again. This while rolling 30-40 mph in town. When the ignition is turned back on, all the unburned fuel that was hangin out in the exhaust goes boom! rather loudly. The noise on this video brought back memories.

    It happens mainly in N-mode because by default N-mode is all setting put in Performance/Race. But if you push the checkered flag button twice, you go into custom mode where you can set things up as you wish. For example, I have mine (the i30N Performance, not the Veloster, as I'm from Europe) set to Custom with the dampers on soft for normal roads, rather than stiff for track. as it would be in N mode, engine in Sport+ as in N mode (there is Normal, Sport, Sport+), LSD in Sport, TC in Normal, etc. So if you get this and use Custom mode with it, and have it set up to use Engine in Sport+, while it does sound nicer and actually give you anti-lag (sweet :D) you don't want to use it everyday going to get groceries if you want your car to last for some time, plus you won't be that douche that annoys everyone in the neighborhood. You can put the Engine in Sport and have a bit of the sound (it's a bit less than in Sport+ but it still pops and bangs) and actually retain a bit of the turbo's life/durability. Also it's a good idea to leave the car on and idling to cool it's oil since it passes through the turbo to cool it, especially after riding it hard for some time and especially if you use N or Custom with Engine turned up. Safe driving everyone!

    This sounds really cool and is a good solution. I am worried about longevity of the parts. All that heat and pressure going through the manifold and valve. If I bought this car I would be legitimately worried about those parts wearing down and breaking quickly. Obviously after the warranty.
    What is your experience with Hyundai's part longevity? Is this system nothing to worry about or would I start have problems at long milage?

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don’t have to use it, there are other modes if you’re worried about longevity. But engineers think about these things when they design it, and 100k is a long warranty.

    *edited for fairness*
    I'll be honest, once the warranty runs out on these you could be forgiven for expecting a fair number of shocked and upset second hand buyers complaining of "premature" turbo failure.
    Anti-Lag systems do have a negative effect on the lifespan of turbo chargers, even if you have high quality components.
    If someone were to drive one of these for 150,000 miles in N mode, you might expect to get through two turbos or even three within warranty period, but that is an extreme example that makes a lot of assumptions.
    As EE pointed out below, based on such a short video it would be unfair to say that this is a certainty, and it may well be that they've engineered out a majority of the issues and smoothed out the shockwaves...
    Time will tell, and I really hope it's a positive result! If anti-lag systems can be engineered to not stress componentry unreasonably we could all have them in the future!
    Personally I wouldn't buy any car with an anti-lag system present because of my fears of turbo failure, until the brave masses have "tested" it for us ten years down the line.

      @EngineeringExplained  6 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      Phil Atkins it may happen, but I don’t think it’s ever safe to make assumptions about a design that engineers spent years on, after a 5 minute video haha.

      Id say your right back in the early 2000's, but turbo tech has come a long way. Its not hard to make a turbo last 200k in a performance car with an anti-lag system, its just expensive and heavy. Automakers dont like expensive and race teams dont like heavy, so its not seen too much. Honestly though, retarded timing is probably the gentlest form of ALS on components. The air/fuel injection systems are the ones that eat turbos in less than 4 races these days.

    The only downside, my guess, is that the after-burn in the manifold will tend to have a long-term damaging effect on the turbo impeller and the downstream emissions cat. But, it's only momentary that anti-lag programming takes place in a given mode, so depending on driving conditions, it could be very brief.

    pretty sure most of your viewers are too young to remember the rally days in the 90's when mitsubishi had that system in the EVO III ... it was nicknamed the bang bang system. it was great for keeping the turbos spooled but it did so much damage to the car that EVO 4's got rid of it.
    this system was used extensively in WRC... i wonder how reliable it will be in a production car here in the states since we drive WAAAAAY more than other countries.

      @kenkalajdzic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You probably don't want to know about either of those in N mode :) Safe to say, both are much worse than in "normal" mode.

    • @allan.n.7227
      @allan.n.7227 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      propbably not.. if I understand the system it is in effect keeping the fan spinning by burning ekstra fuel (ie more ignitions)

    • @kenkalajdzic
      @kenkalajdzic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is correct. More fuel is used, plus the conditions are not optimal so it's probably burning less cleanly (worse emissions).
      Then there's the domino effect - anti-lag puts too much heat into the catalytic converter so they probably have to run rich A/F ratio afterwards to cool it down - even more fuel and emissions.
      It's hard to find something that is both fun and efficient/clean. Almost everything that you do to improve performance of an ICE engine tends to have negative side effects, be it fuel economy, pollution and/or durability.
      Then again, it's good that we have engines that can run in multiple different modes, so we can choose between economy or max performance. I don't really expect many people to redline it in N mode when getting groceries :)

    • @allan.n.7227
      @allan.n.7227 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I understand this as an off-time ignition besides the normal combustion, being that the case isn't that causing damage to the moving parts involved in the combustion?? like valves and springs?? There is a reason for the valve to create a seal when the process of combustion is at any of the 4 times. Please correct me if i'm wrong.
