- A 28 miles & 4,000 feet of ascent hike across the Lakeland fells with one stunning sunset as the backdrop for a solo wild camp. The following morning we also have a beautiful sunrise that bathes the fells in a golden glow. We are hiking between Windermere Station and Penrith station, using the route of the Roman Road across High Street whilst bagging 12 Wainwrights along the way.

Departing from Windermere railway station we cross the road to ascend arrest Head where Alfred Wainwright saw the Lakes for the first time in 1930. here we admire the views of Lake Windermere and the surrounding fells. Next we descend to cross the fields to Dubbs Reservoir and follow the old Garburn Road. Although we don't ascend these Wainwrights we acknowledge Sour Howes and Sallows.
From Garburn Pass we head directly north following the route of the Roman Road and pick off the Wainwrights in the following order
Yoke
Ill Bell
Froswick
Thornwaite Crag
High Street
The Knott
Rampsgill head
Kirsty Pike
High Rise
Wether Hill
Loadpot Hill
Arthur's Pike
We wild camp on this last peak and have magnificent views in the golden sunset overlooking Ulleswater. Sunrise repeats the magic as we pack our gear away before moving in a NE direction across the moors to the standing stones now know as the Cockpit. Whilst these may have been erected 3,500 to 5,000 years ago they have been used in more recent times to form the circle to enclose cockfighting providing betting opportunities in the 18th and 19th centuries.
From here we head for the village of Arkham. We stock up on provisions and then move through the countryside and the holiday park of Lowther. Eventually we emerge onto the main road that takes us to our finishing point of the Penrith Railway Station.
The Lake District in good weather really delivers!
Really does! 😁👍🏼⛺️

Your welcome, thanks for your support and appreciation.
Great video and a great walk, thank you! There's something really special about being on the fell tops as the sun sets and the weather is calm. Brought back some good memories - completing the Wainwrights in recent years and childhood memories of Lowther Wildlife Park. Thanks again and take care.
Thanks for sharing your memories Martin, really appreciate it. Cheers
This was such a pleasure to watch, from that familiar Booths at Windermere station to the lovely sunset and just the beauty of being up on the sunny tops. Another interesting route to add to my list too.
Glad you appreciated Booths it's one of my favourite things about the Lakes! Yes it was a beautiful route and great for a weekend with the rail connections. Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comments.
Wonderful wildcamp, big thanks for sharing and inspiring
Glad you enjoyed the wild camp, thanks for watching and supporting.
You seem to have followed part of Mark Richard's Roman Fort Route. Ravenglass-Hardknott-Ambleside-Penrith. Thence on Alston-Greenhead and Vidolanda 100 mile Hadrain's Highway in his Pathmaster series! A must do for myself if i can get my confidence back. Haven't been on a multi day trip for a few years! Love your Films!
Hi Ian, that's interesting, did not know such a route existed but it sound great. Another one to add to my ever growing list. Hope you do get to be back on the trails. Glad you're enjoying the films and I really appreciate you sharing this insight and information. Cheers Nigel
I don't suppose you have a gpx or any link to a map of the route do you please?
(actually watching a few sections back and with some google maps I think I can piece it together close enough) :)
There are a few more clues in the description as well, so hopefully you can pull it together :) Cheers, Nigel
@@AmblingTrails Actually you've done a great job in the description thank you very much
No problem, hope you get chance to have a go at the route.
Hi do you have the gpx for this route please
Hi Jamie, when I'm in the Lakes I tend not to use gps as I know the routes very well and just carry a map for back up. However, if you go into the video description I do provide a full written description of the route, which I think will give you enough detail to plan this route. Hope this helps and certainly happy to answer any questions.
Hi, thanks for your feedback. looking at doing the end of September
