What facial recognition steals from us

  • There's a massive bait-and-switch at the center of facial recognition technology.
Join the Open Sourced Reporting Network: www.vox.com/ope...
Human faces evolved to be highly distinctive; it’s helpful to be able to recognize individual members of one’s social group and quickly identify strangers, and that hasn’t changed for hundreds of thousands of years. Then in just the past five years, the meaning of the human face has quietly but seismically shifted. That’s because researchers at Facebook, Google, and other institutions have nearly perfected techniques for automated facial recognition.
The result of that research is that your face isn’t just a unique part of your body anymore, it’s biometric data that can be copied an infinite number of times and stored forever. In this video, we explain how facial recognition technology works, where it came from, and what’s at stake.

@@sword_of_damocle5 Well said. We've got a societal structure now where government can watch you pretty much everywhere, but where they lack, the public makes up for it by essentially watching each other and playing the role of "cop". Sort of like a 24/7 snitch service. People with cell phones, dash cams, etc... can record everything that goes on. So it's a case of having the prison guards and the inmates watching the inmates.

The internet isnt just a public space as well, it can be at least partially private. It is accesable to the public, just like any other public space, for instance a hospital or a library, the only real difference is its digital. We choose the amount of things we share with certain people and social circles both in real life and internet. Taking that away will have consequences.
But i am running off arent I, we know China isnt that bad.
