you are amazed that 1928 technology could sound so good, because we have all bought into that, only modern stuff is good or quality, only smart people with computers can design great things. They designed these speakers the same way we sent men to the moon, with slide rules, pencil and paper-------very high tech.
Unfortunately most people today are only accustomed to hearing the sort of compressed/miniaturised presentation that's produced by small direct radiator speakers, but even with the low quality of this clip you can still get a sense of the scale and dynamics that these big horns can portray.
These have got to be the most beautiful sounding speakers I've ever heard in my life but the only reason I cannot classify them as speakers... is for the ginormous size
My first "fall in love" with 15a system was in Paris at La Maison de l'Audiophile. This one is one of the best 15a system I never heard (despite the limitation of TH-cam). The bass is deep and fast, the voice is not projected and remains clear and light. The 597A is not to his advantage because there are not too acute. Interesting to hear live on the organ (Pictures at an Exhibition of Mussorgsky) and the triangle (We get request - Oscar Petterson)
As I started fiddling around, I realized how wrong I was. IMO what I ended up with at the end is something that sounds so real and I've given up NOTHING in terms of clarity or detail. Infact its very holographic when you're in the sweet spot. Its more engaging than any 'audiophile' speaker I've heard at any hifi shop and in the end it didn't cost much. I'm sure so many others like me out there that think horns or big drivers = no clarity and just loud. Well my ears are now fully open!
Really interesting to hear the changes in sound when the camera moves off axis side to side and behind the speaker. Sounds like s stereo mic was used. It really sounds good - on You Tube none the less! Thanks Angelo.
My experience wont be the same as in this video but I think it proves the point you are making. I had what I thought were some very good stand mount speakers. Not big but definitely clear. I also build my own speakers as a hobby. Well for my home theater I set out to build something with more oomph. I figured I'd try my hand at using a large 10 or 12" driver and a compression tweeter and waveguide. I thought what I was going to get is rough, loud sound which is passable for home theater.
The "sweet spot" seems incredibally small as they appear to be very directional. So you'd have to be directly in front and dead center to get the best sound.
+babyfacefister I dunno. I have a feeling with the way these must disperse the sound that the narrow sweet spot that seems to be there in this video isn't actually there.
The big WE horns are hip, but it seems being difficult to get within the dynamic delicacy and fanciful microdynamic organism which some of the smaller horns from mid - 1930s are showing. More brawn than brains anyhow, maybe the reason why quite a few people saying that the big horns sounding unnatural. The Western Electric engineers reached their peak of experience when designing the 22A for example, many years after 12a, 13a, 15a...
That much separation is not necessary to hear stereo. Anything will sound harsh if its too loud. Those speakers sound fantastic. I would be willing to bet your direct radiators in the same room would sound very harsh just trying to keep up with the lowest volume setting on those bad boys.
man, you're right, just what i learned the last years. even one 8" speaker is too small to reproduce female voices reasonably. what do you think of direct radiators with enough radiating surface, e.g. multi-speaker cabinets?
a stereo should be set up with speakers 20' to 30' apart, to create a holographic stereo image between the speakers. Those sound good but are right next to each other ? Sitting in the listening area, that would become quite irritating, as horns tend to be harsh that close - notice how everyone plays soft jazz or horn music with them. If you put Beethoven on it would knock your fillings out, and you'd be turning it down.
No good copyright muting a speaker test video! It's not like I'm going to record the audio track for selling so I think they should keep worse quality recordings up there.
It is a pity that there is no sound ... But I've never heard of horn speakers with good sound. They always sound better than Pathéphone proizvozhstva 1913. Do not save them even tube amplifiers Low frequency. I think you go in vain in the wrong direction.

Victor Brantsen no, I don't really have the ears to judge all the sound parameters. However, the point I would like to make is that some things are really difficult to judge based on a video as dynamics, lows and highs. Dynamics can be damped quite a lot by a limiter inside a camera. Lows and highs highly depend on the quality of the microphone used and the position of the camera in the room as I don't know the directional properties of the microphone. I'm not trying to defend the horn speakers, they are just not my cup of tea. Most of them are ugly as hell and completely unpractical in my opinion. That is already a dealbreaker for me even without hearing the sound (no, I'm not one of those "My speakers should be milk carton size at most." people). PS. Nice to have somebody on TH-cam provide a normal answer to comment on their answer. Thank you for that!

Very tactile sound They are very efficient. Detailed .

There is something really special, the snap and jump factor only high efficiency horns can do.

Wow! Now that sounds sooo natural, definitely not "audiophile" sounding at all, which is how it should be!!!
very smooth fresh sound
amazing! can only imagine how it sounds in real life.

Love to listen to it in person.
Wow.brilliant speakers.

Nice Video and great to see T**'s System first time 'in motion' - BTW the 16A (B) would be desirable, too (as movie file)....
Amazing!........probably has a really low WAF, though :)
WAF is overrated
Real fever !!
I like that good vid.

solid comment my good sir
impressive!
what is the song name? thanks ,sounds great!!
👍👍👍
Whats the rush?
Does anybody know how to build these gorgeous WE horns. Beautiful speakers with a wonderful sound......300 B WOOWW.

çà a l'avantage de pouvoir passer le balai en dessous, n'empêche pas super comme son pour les dimensions...
и что? рупора для площадей, для дома акустика прямого излучения.
But nice
Peggy Lee Fever
That is ridiculous. You shouldn't need something so humogest to convey high quality sound

Big Horn = strong colors on music.... sound giant, not real ....
wrong speed, wrong sound
sounds like a dungeon, coulouration all over it, and no dynamics, no lows, no highs, cheap car radio, please go away.........
All of that based on a video? You must have really special ears...
Don"t you hear it ? I just saw/heard a really good demo on TH-cam, TAD ref. speakers, for example, but these horns.......!

shut your ass up you don't know what fucking sound sounds like if it bit you in the ear you idiot
cesdog27 nice example dude...
it sucks
Seems you don't understen very much of audio I see...
ShadowzPower No he's right. This can't do anything except play elevator music.
Sure
Nah not like I could come close to affording one of these..
