Yes!! I absolutely agree! I have auditory processing issues and it's worse in English and when I try to follow what is happening visually as well, so I'm always so grateful that Rachel does this :)
😄 For those times when your Steampunk/Old West female detective has to interrogate the ladies of the town, and those biddies are at tea, and they say, "We'd invite you to stay, but we don't have an extra cup." Your heroine can whip out her cup and saucer and say to Mrs. Hardbottom, "Not to worry, I come packing my own." *aggressive fiddle music* In all truth, I already am stoked for this new series and can't wait to see what you make next!
Hey Rachel, i am so happy that you used thrifted leather for this. I am a Saddler from Germany, and as much as i love cruelty free alternatives, the alternatives you can get today, are not any better for your environment than real leather. Real leather will last a very long time, often the seams are falling apart where the leather is still fine, so you just redo the seam. I love working with leather. It is a waste product of the meat industry, and as long as cows getting eaten, leather is the most efficent product to create out of the hide. I also love to buy old fur coates from thrift stores, and make new things out of it, giving them a new meaning. The production of new fur really makes no sense these days. But what ever, nice video and beautiful Holster, have a nice weekend :)
I agree. Fake leather is not only plastic, but it's made unethicaly in factories abroad. While real leather can often be sourced from your country of origin or thriefted
Fellow leather crafter 🙋 thank you! I wont use "vegan leather" knowing its worse for the environment than real leather. The day everyone stops eating meat, we can discuss alternative methods. Until then - waste not, want not. Happy crafting!
this! I'm vegan and all about cruelty free stuff but when it comes to leather I'm always conflicted bc idk whether it's actually better to buy real or fake leather, but either way the absolute best option is to get it secondhand :) I'd rather buy real leather from a thrift store or something because it lasts longer and I know I'm not letting it go to waste!
Yeah "vegan leather" is usually low quality trash. I have a 5 year old office chair that has had a fairly easy life, and yet it's already peeling like a sunburn and needs some serious attention. Several otherwise good purses have been thrown away because I couldn't repair them. One lucky sewater jacket was saved because only 2 panels were "vegan leather" so I unpicked them and swapped them for cuts from some old denim jeans. The amount of waste and release of plastic into the environment makes all but the highest quality vinyl much worse in every way than natural leather.
Really appreciate how you mention feeling overwhelmed by projects. I thought it meant I wasn't good enough to do them. But your projects turn out pretty amazing. Inspiring for me at least, to just do things

Oh my, people that notice things like the “amount of spit” or “how you pronounce things” just don’t have a life of their own. You do you, you’re an amazing creator and we love to see you being you ❤️
There's a really easy way to burnish the edges of the leather so that it doesn't look raw or rough where you cut. Take some water on your finger and drag it across the edge (a small section at a time and not a lot of water) and then take a scrap of canvas cloth and rub it back and forth across the section you're working on very fast. Alex Scholl after you comment I sort of want someone to make this on the outside of a shoulder bag rather than as a holster. I have this image in my head of someone in a fluffy skirt sitting down on a park bench with their packed lunch in the bag. They first pull out a cloth napkin for their lap (too protect the fluffy skirt). Then comes a thermos. They remove cup and saucer, fill it, put the thermos back, pull out a cloth napkin to place in their lap to protect the skirt then proceed to eat their lunch out of the bag beside them while holder a saucer and tea cup held in their other hand. It would be awesome it see... also probably make for a cool photoshoot set up. Please someone! Do this and share the photos!
They also make "leather combs" that poke several holes at once. Probably not super useful for this project since most of the edges are curved, but they're a godsend for straight edges.
Honestly, really happy you didn't use "vegan" leather (aka plastic), and instead used secondhand leather! So much better for the environment and so durable!
Second hand leather and fur is basically 100% of my supplies (I have bought scraps brand new, but I feel less bad about that). I found a giant piece of leather at an estate sale before. You really can get some amazing bits second hand 😊
@@RachelAnnPotter yes! I love when artists/crafters/etc use pre-loved leather and fur! anything you can get secondhand is great, but leather and fur can last soooo long if you take care of it right
@@cyansalvatore6011 they have developed a pineapple leather but it is still not in wide use and is not used in applications meant for real durability as of yet. The vast majority of vegan leather is some form of plastic, often polyvinyl chloride. Polyvinyl chloride is so toxic that workers' bones in their fingertips literally start to dissolve - it's called occupational acro-osteolysis. Some bioplastics have also been found to be more toxic to health than conventional plastics - corn based plastic (which has been considered for vegan leather) for example is very toxic for people and land.
@@cyansalvatore6011 additionally, even when leather is plant-based, the amount of intensive processing required to make it (depending on the type - corn based leather tends to be this way) contributes further to exposures and health risks for both workers and fenceline communities, along with surrounding wildlife and ecosystems downstream of these operations.

I just want to say i watch almost all your videos twice, once to enjoy the content, and then I watch them when going to sleep because I find your voice really soothing
I am personally disappointed that I don't get so excited that drool collects and my speech is affected. You are incredibly fun to watch and it makes me sad that some would tell you something like this with zero tact. Also, I can imagine you being Harry Potter's daughter. The sass, the red hair, the oversized jumper. It all makes sense
Well, a teacup holster makes perfect sense to me. In the days of yore(lol), people would travel with metal cups and utensils strapped to their belts. At that time, you couldn't expect all hosts, or inns, to have enough items for all travelers. Plus it showed your status. Metal utensils versus wooden ones, gilding, ornamentation, jewels, etc. LOVE IT! and very well done!
You were on my recommended and all I can say is that I really like listening to your voice it's really calm this is the first video I've ever seen and I already subscribed within the first minute or two
In steampunk, they're used for tea dueling. I've never done it myself but it's apparently a thing. Plus they're pretty and a great way to show your love for simple and charming styles.
Hi Rachel! So a great thread to use for leather working is embroidery thread run through beeswax. It gives the cotton some extra strength and allows the thread to pass through any holes punched in the leather. Sometimes you can also used waxed linen thread. Hope this helps and I look forward to more from this series!
I saw the brand of the bag and laughed. Overpriced designer item sent to the thrift store and used for art. Also leather is an amazing material. If you hand sew some more look up "sailors palm" to save your hand.
Tbh, I’d never even heard of this ‘designer’. Had to google. Apparently he made the Nine West brand previously. Clearly doesn’t sell in the international markets. Sub $250 pricing means it’s fast fashion which we definitely don’t need more of. I’m glad she found a way to recycle the bag. 😊
Rachel has leveled up in her cottagecore hobbit aesthetic with this project. That dysentery clapback gave me flashbacks of Oregon trail in grade school.
YES! YES! OMG YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!! This is a silver lining to the pandemic! Besides being environmentally sound, a TEACUP HOLSTER is also MEDICALLY INDICATED !!! COOL GEAR!!! YYAAAASSSS!!!
I have started playing your videos while I do my own craftin, ( knitting and crotching) and the coolest thing about your videos is, I can count rows and stay focused and at the same time listen to you, it is just like crafting with someone else which is super fun.
This really does have the Hobbit aesthetic going on. I can just see a group of Hobbits pulling their tea cups out of their holsters and having an impromptu tea party.
I love that you're being so considerate. I come across things my mom would love yet never commit to scheduling the time to make them for her. You're being the person I want to be! Definitely sparking joy to see.
About people being rude about your prononciation : I'm French and a little hard of hearing specially when people don't articulate correctly AND I usually don't have any problem to understand you without reading on your lips or without subtitles. SO your prononciation is fine (and I LOVE your voice,). I LOVE your videos, they give me smile and happiness. It's so precious in these times.
Crazy! As a knitter for many years I can see you are wearing that great sweater inside out! The inside out cables gave it away! Cool beans, Miss Rachel.
My husband's dnd character from high school was obsessed with tea so these always remind me of him. And my husband of course actually is really into tea. He hates water, drinks weak iced tea instead.

I relate to so many things you said in this video: spit-slurring speech, sciatica flares, and the whole mood of the intro and outro of the video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Frodo is smol without question: it’s not about stature, it’s about bein liddle and baby. This project was so cute I teared up - I wish I was joking. Happy Holidays!
Over the past few weeks, i have been checking out your channel, and for the most part, ive enjoyed it. Your quirkiness is fun and you're totally relatable. As a leatherworker, the pinning of the leather hurt me on a spiritual level lol If you intend to use more leather in the future, i would recommend using double sided tape. It holds things where they should be without poking holes in the leather. That being said, i love this project, and i love repurposing thrifted items. The journey continues!
What a charming idea!!! I can totally picture a game where you have three of these holders: one for a teacup, one for the mushrooms and one for a deck of cards and you collect them throughout the game and you need them for various challenges. ^___^ !!!!
Also fun weathering/staining tip whatever you use (like paint) water it down and then brush it on with a fan brush. Let dry down a little then take a big wet painters sponge and dab away until it looks right
so hope this is helpful for future leather projects at 14:33 you sew the strap on when finishing leather that you cut you bind the edges with wax you want to use wax along the raw edge and then paint it, you can use acrylic paint or even candle wax, for future reference I would have done it before sewing the strap on so it would be easier, the rest of the holster you could do after.
By the by for your worry about using real leather, very often it’s good to buy leather when the hides are from a farm or something of the sort, as otherwise those hides will still be there and just end up thrown out and in landfill. And getting second hand leather stuff is very good!

If you want greater ease sewing leather, pre poke the holes with an awl.
This hack saved my fingers in a recent project! Awls are truly magical.
I love when artists/crafters/etc use pre-loved leather and fur! anything you can get secondhand is great, but leather and fur can last soooo long if you take care of it right
Not all vegan leather is plastic. The development of vegan leather has advanced a lot on other materials than plastic.
You crack me up! How cool is a tea holster! My Gran would have loved that!

Rachel: *giving Mrs. Weasley vibes in that chonky orange sweater*

I just want to say thank you so much for having captions I have auditory processing disorder and rely a lot on subtitles to make sure I can catch whats said so thank you much for always having them and checking they are correct ❤️
Same here. I turn off the sound and read the captions.
Yes! Subtitles are so helpful!
Of course! ❤️❤️❤️
I have APD too (and severely deaf, as if that wasn't bad enough) and I 💖 TH-camrs who have subs.
oh god i relate to “not everything is a debate.” i made a comment that hestia would be a cute steampunk name and got a couple comments that were like “well actually she’s a greek goddess!” my bisexual ass is offended that you thought i didn’t know who hestia is
I think a lot of people are turning to the internet to relieve some of their frustrations unfortunately 🥺
Hestia, goddess of the hearth, creator of the phoenix, if my knowledge of mythology is correct. And I really hope it is.
Why would that stop it from being a cute steampunk name?
@@kellswitch exactly???
Fellow Hestia lover here, what what! *high five*
This is the best video ever! My favorite TH-camr trying to do what I do for a living (I'm a leathersmith) it really doesn't get better than that.
Finding your channel during quarantine was such a blessing because I can 100% relate to lacking motivation to create things and stay productive. This video was adorable (like all of your videos) and helped boost my motivation to get crafty. Thanks you for always being you ♡♡♡
English is my second language and when you said "I've been sleeping on leather purses" I only understood that was sarcastic when you wrote on the screen "not literally" 😂 I kind of knew it was highly unlikely, but I didn't understand the idiom at first and was a little confused to say the least.
To be fair, you never know with Rachel
I only speak english and I don't get it. But uhh..... I do that allot.
English is my first language, and I interpreted it literally for a good few seconds!
You write better English than most Americans I know
English is my first language and I still don't understand what she meant 😅
For some reason I imagined the teacup holster would be something Kaylee from “Firefly” would have! Wonderful job! ✨
Yes I can totally see that.
Also Western Mary Poppins.
Omg that's it! Rachel in the sketch has big Kaylee energy.
@@mirjanbouma Right?? 😄
Perfect comment

“9 minutes in and I haven’t said anything of substance”- Me, teaching remotely this week 😂
1- this item is whimsical as h*ck and super cute and super pretty
2- your hair looks super soft
3- the sweaters look cozy af
4- I'm grateful your shared the doggos parked near you
5- your channel is probably in my top favourites since I discovered it. the giggles are most welcome, and the eye-candy you end up making inspires me to make things too. And making things is good for the brain! YOUR good for the brain. Is this weird to say? I'll go make some tea. Yep.
Rachel: Doesn't see the point
Steampunk aesthetic: AM I A JOKE TO YOU??
Huh?
Exactly!! 😅 this is my Renaissance Faire aesthetic!
@@nyclady27 the point of this is just the aesthetic x)

LOL Right!
I look forward to these videos every Friday, they're my cozy comfort videos to end a long week 😊
Seconded 😌

It is time
✨Yess go off✨
Finaly. It’s time to shine.
Yes, do it! :D
omg I have one tooooo
How’d it go?
Thank you so much for that opening, I needed that laugh. I love that you are not afraid to be goofy. A joy as always.
I feel like this is something a Hobbit would wear when they go off on adventures.
Rachel gives off Hobbit vibes
I just want to say i watch almost all your videos twice, once to enjoy the content, and then I watch them when going to sleep because I find your voice really soothing
That intro is so Rachel and makes me want to watch this video so much. The intro did not disappoint. My conclusion: Rachel is amazing
Hahaha thank you. 😭😭😭
Bad guy: “You wouldn’t!”
Rachel: Oh, but I would. *AGRESSIVE SIP*
My motivation to do anything is “small” too except clicking this video to watch my fave vintage and tea sipping gal Rachel ❤️ ☕️
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I was looking for this comment about the Vince Camuto bag.
I made something sort of like this for when I go to the ren festival... but it’s for turkey legs. A turkey leg holster.
Omg 😂😂😂😂😂
That's AWESOME 😍 ❤️❤️❤️
Whhaaaaaaat??? Fantastic!!
@@rachelmaksy i think i can speak for every human alive when i say please make this
I've never related more than to the repeatedly sitting down and spilling your tea over everything but still doing it again anyway 😭
It's the perfect mix between cottagecore and adventure i love it✨
Keep doing what you are doing, sweet girl. I'm 64 and totally love your videos. You have such a gift for creating things. Don't give up on that.
Rachel has leveled up in her cottagecore hobbit aesthetic with this project. That dysentery clapback gave me flashbacks of Oregon trail in grade school.
This tea holster is totally a 21st century thing! We’ll all start carrying our own tea cups, utensils, etc. post-pandemic world. 😉👍🏽
Ooo, excellent point!
YES! YES! OMG YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!! This is a silver lining to the pandemic! Besides being environmentally sound, a TEACUP HOLSTER is also MEDICALLY INDICATED !!! COOL GEAR!!! YYAAAASSSS!!!
post-pandemic-picnic could become an aesthetic :)
Saying “I’ve been waiting for this” is an understatement. Also saying “I didn’t know that I really needed this” is very much so an understatement.
I have started playing your videos while I do my own craftin, ( knitting and crotching) and the coolest thing about your videos is, I can count rows and stay focused and at the same time listen to you, it is just like crafting with someone else which is super fun.
Why do I feel like someone with a cottagecore aesthetic would prance around the forest with this I-
That entire opening was cinematic, please make a full movie, thank you. 🥺💕
Hahaha thank you 😂❤️
This really does have the Hobbit aesthetic going on. I can just see a group of Hobbits pulling their tea cups out of their holsters and having an impromptu tea party.
My mom always wants one of these from the renaissance faire every year, I am so sending her this video/making her one now!!
*you in your fabulous vintage outfit, looking elegant*
*spills tea* “Oh, FUCK”
This is me in my hand sewn Victorian bustle dress, attempting to be a lady, until the cat jumps on the table for the cream and dumps my tea in my lap.
My husband's dnd character from high school was obsessed with tea so these always remind me of him. And my husband of course actually is really into tea. He hates water, drinks weak iced tea instead.
Please make the spy purse from Nancy Drew!! I always thought her outfits and the purse were so overlooked... I always wanted to see them made by an enthusiast🤗❤️
I relate to so many things you said in this video: spit-slurring speech, sciatica flares, and the whole mood of the intro and outro of the video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Frodo is smol without question: it’s not about stature, it’s about bein liddle and baby.
This project was so cute I teared up - I wish I was joking.
Happy Holidays!
Over the past few weeks, i have been checking out your channel, and for the most part, ive enjoyed it. Your quirkiness is fun and you're totally relatable.
As a leatherworker, the pinning of the leather hurt me on a spiritual level lol
If you intend to use more leather in the future, i would recommend using double sided tape. It holds things where they should be without poking holes in the leather.
That being said, i love this project, and i love repurposing thrifted items.
The journey continues!
me without my glasses: when did Rachel get a really fat cat? why is this one so chill?
me with my glasses: oh....never mind
HAHA ❤️❤️❤️
This seems like something you’d find in a quirky Alice in Wonderland style war.
What a charming idea!!! I can totally picture a game where you have three of these holders: one for a teacup, one for the mushrooms and one for a deck of cards and you collect them throughout the game and you need them for various challenges. ^___^ !!!!
As an avid tea dueller for like 5 years this video ignites supreme joy
The ability to look at a picture and make what you want from scratch is goals af
Also fun weathering/staining tip whatever you use (like paint) water it down and then brush it on with a fan brush. Let dry down a little then take a big wet painters sponge and dab away until it looks right
“Just thought it was pretty so i got it, okay” this is me with floral prints too 😂

so hope this is helpful for future leather projects at 14:33 you sew the strap on when finishing leather that you cut you bind the edges with wax you want to use wax along the raw edge and then paint it, you can use acrylic paint or even candle wax, for future reference I would have done it before sewing the strap on so it would be easier, the rest of the holster you could do after.
Oh my goodness! I've had my eye on a teacup holster for ages, and this made me realize I could attempt to make my own! Well done Rachel!
🤗🤗🤗🤗
You definitely should! I made one last month and it was a relatively easy project. I used a spoon as the fastener.
My husband always jokes about me always having a cup of tea in my hand ..I need this in my life 😂
rachel: “mediating the amount of spit in my mouth”
also rachel: *drool outtake in a previous video*
this is also me, my partner thinks it’s hilarious
By the by for your worry about using real leather, very often it’s good to buy leather when the hides are from a farm or something of the sort, as otherwise those hides will still be there and just end up thrown out and in landfill. And getting second hand leather stuff is very good!
Also faux leather tends to wear out quicker and be sent to a landfill quicker, as it’s mostly just plastic
Does anybody keep feeling like Rachel should actually do a full on Molly Weasley video?
First of all, I love the word “holster”. Secondly, Rachel, you are always entertaining and fun. Thank you!!
