- I've been wanting to try one of these bad boys for a while now, but seeing as thrift stores still aren't uh... the safest places currently, I figured I'd use my giganto pile of clothing that currently resides in my basement.
I definitely want to do more of these, I learned a a lot by tearing apart pre-made items and making them into something new!

as a broke plus size girl who really struggles to find thrifted clothes that fit me, can I just say how much I appreciate Rachel talking about not buying thrifted items in super large sizes just to make them smaller? of course, people can do/buy whatever they want, but it's just nice to hear someone acknowledge the struggle.
This! I am also plus-size, as is a friend who owns a thrift/ vintage shop. She said a petite girl came in and bought a load of 2X shirts and sweaters because “they just feel comfier”, and she realized that’s part of why plus-size folk have such trouble finding them even if they exist. She was like, “and what do I do? Chastise her? Tell her how hard it makes it for us? Refuse to sell? I can’t make those calls.” It still occupies my head rent free whenever I shop.
Yesssss, I felt absolutely the same! Pleasantly surprised to hear it being discussed!
I recently reversed what some people do. I bought a cute petite sized skirt and added side panels to bring it up to my size! 😊 I chose wild fabric for the panels as it was a plain denim skirt. The main reason I taught myself to sew is because I hate shopping and finding things ALMOST in my size. I am tall as well as plus sized. Upcycling thrifted clothes means I don't have to do as much work. 😉 I just add to what is there. Added bonus: when I do have to buy new fabric, I don't have to buy as much.
@@diablogirl I mean it's not realit a problem if she just feels comfier, the struggle is real, but I don't think you shouldn't dress comfy just because soemone else may not buy that item. The resizing is more problematic, because they don't have to do that, really

This part SPOKE to me. It is so hard finding decent clothes over a size 10/12 in thrift stores. I’d rather they pick up a sheet or table cloth to make clothes. Like Micarah Tewers does!

I have seen people taking plus sized workwear to thrift flip. Workwear!
It’s difficult enough to find nice plus sized clothes in op shops, but taking nice workwear is about 100x more mean. Because there are plenty of poor plus sized people who really, really NEED those garments! Not just nice to have, but actually, literally NEED them.
And someone is taking it just to turn it into some modern play suit top type thing? That’s mean. Really mean.
Also, there are plenty of men’s shirts they could use. Normal sized men’s shirts that would do just as well, but they had to take the one nice women’s plus size office blouse. It’s just exceptionally inconsiderate.

This! A dress shop I've been buying from the last couple years, all the clothes have big, useable pockets (!) and little straps on the shoulders to clip around the bra. They're wonderful.

Yessssugh. Also, as a plus-size wearer...it means I can't really "thrift flip" anything I find. So...I prefer "flips" that tailor items to make them look less outdated or how to fix the shoulder pad situation, haha.

You brought tears to my eyes with this video. I am a very large person who has always been a very large person who also grew up poor. Thrifting was something I had no choice in growing up and into my adult life. Finding larger sizes was hell back then before "thrifting" became a thing and thrift flips and oversized clothes came into fashion. I hated watching these kinds of videos because I lived that struggle.

When I did a pattern-making course years ago we were told, low back and low front leads to shoulder fall. You need one or the other higher to prevent that happening. Alternatively, you could add a fabric tie across the upper back to hold the shoulders in place.

As a plus size gal I really appreciate your thoughtfulness of not just altering something way too big, because I rarely encounter clothing that is way too big for me. I definitely find myself feeling left out of most thrift flip options. There needs to be more videos of sizing things up lol
I once bought a t-shirt that I knew was going to be too small on me, but I liked the design on it, so I cut the design out and basically made myself an entirely new shirt and even with my limited sewing skills, I think it turned out really cute! Looking back I just wished I had filmed it because I almost cried I was so proud of myself (even though there were definitely things that I could have done better)
I wear standard sizes but I saw a Snow White dress for cheap and I just had to have it, I couldn't zip it up so I did some searching on Pinterest and found a diy on how to upsize a strapless dress so I used that even though my dress had sleeves (which also didn't fit, I was lazy with those and just added a piece of elastic on the underside so they would stretch across my arms and just finished the edges but yes my armpits show, lol) but I ended up adding gussets to the side seams and I felt such a sense of accomplishment after making it fit me. Adding panels and gussets are great ways to upsize things, in contrasting or matched fabrics.

Yep. There are people out there that want to harp on plus size folks for supporting fast fashion but will then go to the thrift store and buy all of the plus size clothes. And the slow fashion industry in general isn't plus size friendly.
As someone who recently started sewing clothes for myself, I really appreciate that you show all of the little mistakes (especially with stuff like the neckline that is SO HARD TO GET RIGHT). I always feel a bit self-conscious wearing them out (not that I can really go out much with lockdown, but still) because I know they don't look perfect, but seeing you wear them confidently and how it really doesn't make or break the piece is super helpful!!

@@mircat28 she actually was wearing overalls while making one of the designs, dark denim ones, also she left the pants she made open at the shin so they are more like culottes or cut off capris than knickerbockers, but your idea is a great name for the "secret pants" and I vote that we officially call them "new-knickerbockers"

When I was in high school in the 70s, we called those secret pants “coulots” (though I’m not sure of the spelling) and they were quite popular. We often wore them with tall boots. The blue dress is very flattering on you.
I like the whimsy the higher waistline gives the blue dress. I liked it better before the belt was added.

Thank you for commenting on what "usually" happens in thrift thrift videos. It frustrates me so much to see plus size clothes get cut up, especially as a plus size thrifter.

THANK YOU for doing it this way! So many thrift flips take perfectly serviceable plus size garments away from people who need them (as you so eloquently stated in the video). Using clothes you already own circumvents this problem entirely, is more sustainable, keeps thrifting accessible for people who can't afford to buy clothes otherwise, and has the benefit of being free :). I would love to see more "thrift flips" like this in the future because they are vastly superior
you absolutely nailed with thrift flips are a problem. Getting larger sized at the thrift store is already difficult for the people that actually need them.. we have enough old or unwanted clothes in our closets. why don't we try to patch them together to create something new. so many options with the stuff you were already about to throw away.

Yeah, when I saw you use the back pattern peice for the neckline the seamstress in me was like 'NOOOOOO!' - in a Darth Vader voice. It turned out cute but invariably as you learned there is a reason for everything when it comes to a pattern. Sewing is a learning process though, and it's great to see you continuing the journey and not throwing up your hands as so many do. Keep sewing! 👍🏼Also, LOOOVVVED the plant lady skit. I can only sometimes keep plants alive but never inside, and only if they're hard to kill.

There was a thrift/consignment/vintage stuff store in my home town that would have literal "pile sales" once a month where they would pile all the non-aesthetic clothing they got on the back porch and let people climb all over and grab what they wanted. You could find the weirdest stuff one day (like a set of cheerleader outfits???) or the next month the most frilly normycore 90s dresses and come away with a trash bag full of clothes for super cheap, if you fully embraced the weirdness (and washed everything immediately like omfg it was kinda super gross). I still have skirts and dresses from pile sales 10 years ago and they suddenly came "into fashion"

I was just asking where to get plus size vintage aesthetic clothes because everything for I can find is rockabilly/pin up style, and I gave Rachel as more of the direction I'm trying to go. Old-fashioned, but not of a specific era. A combination of vintage, thrifted, and modern.

On the fit of the gingham top, I’m wondering if taking it in at the shoulder seam would help? Basically making the front a tiny bit shorter via the shoulder seam. That would pull it a little tighter and perhaps stay in place? No idea if that would work, but that’s the thought i had while watching..... 🤷🏻♀️

Okay so perhaps this may seem like a “boring” idea, but I’d really like to see you take clothes that you love but don’t quite fit right and tailor them to your body and how you go about that. I know you’re not trying to become a seamstress channel, but your editing humor could make it an interesting but informative video series (like 1x/month.) Seeing you tackle tailoring pants to fit your waist properly or a blouse to fit your bust (and not gap at the buttons) would be 😙👌. I think tailoring is the next big part of sustainable fashion, but it can be unaffordable for many. It could also be a part of a cosplay video - finding an item of clothing to suit the character and then making it suit you?
I’m just really interested in learning how to sew now because of you. I already have too many hobbies so I won’t let myself buy a sewing machine yet, but SOON.

I am interested in seeing stuff from this potential series idea, too! from a sustainability standpoint, it's great to be able to alter clothing that you already have and don't fully love into something that actually fits your body and style :)
@@thepuddleclub plus people can change sizes, I would love to be able to adjust my clothes instead of having to buy it in new!
For the gaping of necklines, you have to calculate in reductions, especially if the neckline goes deep. It is called contouring and there are many very good tutorials here on TH-cam. The more curvy one is, the more reductions there have to be.
You did every kind of thrift flip; refitting, redesigning, and basically use the old fabric to make a whole new piece. I totally love it!
"Thrift flips" is basically the 2021 version of historical alterations when the styles would change drastically all of a sudden 😂

@@TheCastilloFamilyAK definitely a headache! But it gave mantuamakers and tailors work, many who devoted their entire lives to the craft. Nowadays, few people get clothing altered, and the dressmaking and tailoring industries are sadly dying away.

I esentially stopped sewing when I realized that I could buy a finished garment cheaper that I could buy a pattern and notions, let alone the fabric! Yes, I know that sewing enabled me to ensure fit and style and color to fit my aesthetic...yeah, yeah. I'm still broke.
@@annbrookens945 I spent many years of my life completely broke, so I know where you are coming from (to whatever degree I possibly could without being in your exact shoes) and I'm terribly sorry that you're going through it. I know that sewing garments isn't available to everyone for a variety of reasons, financial being one of them, but I simply think that there are a lot of people who could repair old garments or make their own, or hire a clothing artist to design one for them who absolutely do have the means, and then just either choose to shop fast fashion because of convenience or because they just don't realise how it impacts the trade and also the environment. Also, much as historical folks did who maybe could only afford 3-4 proper outfits a year, they would have them made high quality so that initial expenditure was high, and then just repair repair repair. This system isn't suited for all, but I do think there is something to learn from the culture of alterations and dressmaking.

For the gingham, maybe you elasticate the neckline to give it some “grab” on your shoulders? Or just a bit around the shoulder area might work.

Or maybe bias tape. I tend to finnish necklines with storebaught bias tape when i don't want to do a facing
Elastic across the tops of the sleeves would work. To keep a smooth line maybe the adjustable bra strap trick might work. Take the straps from a defunct or hated bra, sew the beginning and the ring end to the front and back. Tack the first 2/3ish to the top sleeve leaving the adjustable part free till the try-on. If you sew the adjustable to the front, it makes it a lot easier to wear.
You could also replace the fabric in the back (white with the hem trim across the top?) and make it look like a fashion statement. "Mistake?! Nooooo! Don't be silly."

Loved this. We all need to be more mindful about buying things that will wind up in a landfill somewhere. All your flips are adorable and so you. You might want to pick apart the shoulder seams on the blue gingham blouse and take a little bit out of the front shoulder piece only. Taking a little more off the neckline side tapering toward the shoulder. Alter the facing the same. It will help. I also have a generous bosom. When I started sewing I had the same problem with square necklines. A friend of mines mother showed me how to do this and how to cut a square neckline to alleviate that gaping issue. You’re making great progress on you sewing journey.
You could add a drawstring to the bottom of each pant leg and a snap button detachable cuff to have both secret pants and fitted pants :)

You make me long for the days of ladies sewing circles. Which predate me considerably, except for in the museum costumer world of which I was a part when I was a young'n and of course amongst those who quilt by hand on a large frame. There is just something about the commaradery and the willingness to share knowledge of the art form amongst fellow sew-ers that just gives me the warm fuzzies inside. Kind of like when watching your dog walk all over your fabric on the floor, or your pattern pieces, or both. He's such a sweetie.
There is a group in my area, which of course is shut down due to the Pandemic. Which is why it is so awefully nice to be able to watch your videos, on most Fridays. Thanks a bunch.
The problem with people using large clothing items to make something for a smaller person is that it digs into the small amount of clothing for larger people as well. Small people can fit into large clothing items and call them oversized but it doesn't exactly go the other way around. Thank you Rachel for pointing this out!

Honestly every time I think we need something for the house (curtains, placemats, flower pots, pillows, etc.) my very very first thought is “how can I make that?” I wanted a basket for picking flowers and herbs from my garden so I spent $25 on a basket weaving kit. There’s something really seductive about making things that are also useful and wearable.
'Plants, ye be warned' killed me. I'm covertly watching youtube at work because we're really slow in January, and I think I just gave it away by cackling at my computer screen... I always enjoy your sense of humor, but this video especially made me laugh all the way through! 4:31 Yes!! This has always always always bugged me about thrift flips!! Finding clothes in plus size that you like can be really hard and it's always annoyed me to see people chop up plus size clothing to make a matching top and mini skirt or a dress. I've never really been able to articulate why but I think you hit the nail on the head.
This thrift flip, was exactly how you honestly are supposed to do one ❤️ Your authenticity proves that with a little patience something beautiful and better can come out of anything.

I am legitimately proud of you for the homemade cut scene AND the wasted time editing the plant bit. Which BTW I totally relate to so not a waste in my opinion.
i've also busted out my black thumb on a bunch of new plants. when I over-watered them, found something that said to take them out of the pots & put them on newspaper. the air getting to the sides and wicking of the paper can dry out the soil faster, and it will be ready to repot - already out and not just moving sodden soil from 1 to another
Get an app that tracks watering. It helps a lot to prevent overwatering.
I would highly recommend Rosery Apparel's thrift flips here on youtube, she does a lot of similar things like taking the skirt off a dress so it's a top or recutting a dress so it just fits better. None of that superglue shit

I have a suggestion for the gingham top... you can add an elastic to the neckline from the front to the back, over each shoulder. I find using a facing for necklines and "understitching" helps with finishing and overall smoothness.
Your point on buying big sizes out feels so strange when our thrift stores are almost nothing BUT big sizes. It feels almost impossible to find things below 42. :^0

As a plus size girl who sews, it’s totally fine to repurpose something that you used to wear and don’t wear anymore (I’ve done it myself).
Donating doesn’t always mean your clothes will be repurposed, they could still go to landfill. Closed circle recycling is always best!
YES thank you for not buing large sizes just to remake them. It's actually really hard to find second hand clothing if you're over a certain size.

Regarding your grandma's old slides - in my family, we just digitize the pictures and then we can hold on to them without them taking out precious space.
I'm sure there's little chance that this will be seen, but maybe consider sewing on a small piece of fabric on the inner side of both pant legs with a button hole. Attach a button above the bits of fabric and a button on the direct opposite side of the pant leg that the fabric is on. That way you can tighten the pants like you would a shirt sleeve or unbutton them for the looser look. Then you can have the best of both worlds!
