Having seen your build i must say i rate it as the most efficient one ive come accross. Am going to embark on a build , i used to be a welder fabricator many moons ago so i am drawn to it. A excellent informative video and told in laymans terms. Well done.

I just bought a pellet stove to replace my old wood stove for the garage, I have to insulate the garage better now, LOL no big deal, I had enough of storing and splitting wood here in the city, I can more control of the temperature with the pellet and not have to worry about burning my garage down

Hi Sir, good post and build. I have a small garage that I use to work on cars for a living. My last shop had one in it but a really expensive Clean Burn that was all automatic, had a 500 gallon tank, heated 3 bays and then another 2 rooms. I think the guy that owned it spent about $5,000 for it. For the last 5 years here I've relied on a diesel space heater about 750 btu, but winter hit us already here in Denver, CO. about 8 degrees high today and a foot of snow. I have an out gas water heater and most of the other stuff. Yours is the best on here as for simple and efficient. Really appreciate you sharing.

Great setup. But I would suggest making the plastic oil container from metal. Even a used fuel can. Then weld a plug in button. I’d use a glass site glass in side for oil level.

Very nice. Most of these seem to drip the oil in the pan and then blow air on top or around it. It seems like you might be sort of pre-vaporizing by blowing the oil in with air (if I am understanding correctly). The others I looked at use a small stream of oil, and yours appears to work on just drips. The others require more equipment to make, so this looks to be more efficient and a little easier to build. Thanks for sharing.

Too cold now, need it running.
Yes Ollie I do filler it I have a hop filter in intake bucket used to use it for my hops in my home brew don't need it for that anymore so it's come in very handy I've shown it on my utube video when ever it uploades ha ha

If that fan is dc, you could put a potentiometer It and control the speed. If it’s AC a light dimmer will work to vary the speed.

I built a waste oil burner for my garage and a problem I found was the drip speed would constantly vary, as the oil warmed and cooled, fed by gravity. I fixed that, with a 555 timer IC circuit, triggering a 240v peristaltic pump, via a semiconductor relay unit. It provides a perfectly regulated drip feed and is adjustable from pump running from 1 second per minute, to 60 seconds per minute. 10 seconds run is perfect for a steady burn. I have a 3 feet fall from pump, down to where it drips into burner via an 8mm copper pipe. That allows the oil to gain heat and it evens out the pump output.
I also added a couple of 240v old computer fan, blowing on the outside of the casing, to spread the heat beyond the heater, connected as 1 on, 2 on in series, 2 on in parallel so I could adjust the amount of blow.
Great stove, I bet it would run on filtered waste cooking oil. I would be weary about using a Petrol based starting fluid, under certain conditions it could flash back in your face. A piece of Diesel or Paraffin soaked rag would be safer.
Yes Richard quite right, I only use the petrol mixed with engine oil as I have some left spare from my chainsaw and use it up as petrol don't keep well and seperate if stored for long periods.

Hahahahaha, lol. Yea give it a go... Just take a small bowl and put Ammonia in them, they are like Drug Addicts. Although Carpenter Ants are harmless, they do make nest in " Untreated Wood ", like your Foundation or even House Beams that is " Untreated " since those Beams are made long ago..., etc.... I found that out at my old Gram's House. They made Nest in her Foundation Beams :(((((. That is how I discovered that they like Ammonia, during cleaning like I stated in the Video :)))).

Thanks Ollie got hold of one 16 euros delivered I'm using about 3/4 litres an hour temp around 280 celcius great job but I wouldn't leave it unattended for very long they can be a bit dangerous don't know think

If you want to precisely control how much oil drips regardless of how viscous, then take a look at the type of pump you get in a theatrical smoke machine... you can pulse them very precisely and only pump tiny amounts of oil... I think you can buy replacement smoke machine pumps fairly cheaply off ebay.

Thanks Jakub, Going to make some small changes to it when the weather gets warmer this year now that its working the way i want it to.This heater is used every day to heat my workshop in the winter at a very small cost of a tiny 12v 0.18a fan.

I know, going to change the design to a self igniting heater and is why i didn't make a proper support bracket for the burner. going to have a thermostat controlling the the main burner and have it fully automatic.

Yes. I am looking now to build it fully automated with an oil fired heating boiler furnace with a room stat and electronic ignition. So i will be atomising and preheating the oil prior to ignition. Will make an interesting video i'm sure!

Would like some advice please. Would you say I would have an issue with keeping the oil stored outside and fed inside with a pipe. With the pipe being a 8mm pnuematic line. Not sure if I will get good flow ( will be at a higher height outside). But low viscosity due to temperature may not give me a good drip? What do you think ?
Sorry for missing your message Kas. If your building a similar set up to mine keeping the oil outside should not be an issue as long as you use a bigger pipe than 8mm from outside to your drip valve inside the building and then 8mm from drip valve to the air/oil supply.
I've seen several of these, all having to have forced air. Can this be made to use natural draw instead. I understand it would probably be not as hot.
You can, but the biggest issue I've seen so far is that they're usually not as clean burning. But from what I understand they get more efficient with hotter oil, so you could take the copper pipe and have two or more coils just above the fire to preheat the oil. Which would make it easier to burn, as well as being much cleaner.
What's the size of the fire hole,and the pot?If you move pot inside,do you need cover with hole?So far I'm using your design in my workshop and also thinking about pot inside the stove.
Great stove and amazing that it uses so little oil! Do you find that the oil/air feed pipe gets clogged at the end by carbon deposits?
How often do you have to clean out the burn pan?
How much smoke do you get during start-up and then during normal cycling?
I am finding very heavy smoke production on my set-up.

Not sure why I had not seen your comment and sorry for the delayed response Philip.
It gets deposits at the end after a few weeks but does not clog up. I just poke the deposits off with a screwdriver just as a maintenance thing.
I clean my pan before lighting every time now as it runs more consistent and lights easier.
Initial start up there is a small amount of smoke but because of the forced air it gets up to temperature in the main burner/combustion pan within seconds and the smoke(unburned fuel) is no longer emitted. No smoke at all when running.
If your getting a lot of smoke, maybe your burner is taking too long to get up to temperature to get full combustion. Is your burner vessel too thick and needing more time to heat up?Thinner burner/pot means quicker start up. Is your pot sat inside directly on another heat dissipating material i.e the bottom of your heater? If you are getting smoke during normal cycling then the oil supply needs to be slowed down or the air supply turned up as smoke means less combustion. If you need more help I can send you my email as I have for others and get yours running more efficiently. Don't give up. Thanks for you comment.

Thanks. The fan is glued to a 22mm copper pipe.The oil funnel sits inside a 22mm copper pipe and the pipe from the tee connector is 15mm copper pipe and is all one piece into the burner/pan.from the fan to the burner is a length of 600mm (2ft) in total. If your building one yourself you dont have to be critical with the length.
What is that white paste sealing the glass and the pipes, is it mortar?
No Andrew it's high temperature paste mainly for pointing flue pipe joints. Only used this temporary as going to make proper flanged entries for oil supply and secondary pipe when l modify it next spring/summer.

The fan is a 12vdc removed from an old battery charger and the filter is homemade out of household sponge and pvc pipe. Never had a problem at the drip valve yet. I have made a video on the filter. My fan is pretty good but if I slow it down oil will back up in my line almost went asleep a couple of nights ago I heard a bit of a racket the oil was pissing out of the fan I could have had a major problem had I gone asleep it took me an hour to calm her down too close for comfort what
nice bit of kit! That fan you've got blowing ai into the furnace.... wow it's so small! obviously it does the job though. What I want to know is... what type of fan is it? I can see why you don't want to move the tank away from the stove, as it works great where it is... ok you need to adjust periodically, but why fix what isn't busted! love this!
Thank you Lain, the fan make is colorful generic 50mm cf-12515 12vdc 0.18A. I salvaged this from an old battery drill charger. Would recommend to reserch the cfn and go slightly higher if you are to build one yourself especially if your floor area is bigger than mine and connect to a speed controller. This will give you bags of control on the heat output(being able to adjust air and oil) and easier to get a nice clean burn with no smoke from the flue.The oil filter is a must also as I have never in 2 years now had to clear the drip valve(basic water valve)of any debris or blockages. Feel free to ask on anything else Lain. Cheers.
A couple heaters I've seen had the copper tubing coiled around the stove pipe to preheat the oil claiming it made it burn cleaner. Your pan and plumbing being near probably contributes to your clean burn.

A safer starting method is 1/8 cup desil on a rag. Wont flash back as much as gasoline.
Nice stove although the fuel consumption sounds a bit optimistic to me.
The stove I use is dripping at about the same rate and that boils down to about 1-1.5 liter/hour.
Perhaps my drips are bigger?
I know it sounds little but thats roughly what it uses. If i used any more my small workshop would melt with the heat. Had to mess about with different ideas for months to get the expansion/gas bottle temperature down to 150c average so it was practical for working in. would like to see yours if you have a vid on it. My burner video is online but you've probably seen that already. It heats my shop (8x4m) and my wife's washing room (4x4m) gets some excess heat from the chimney pipe that runs through it. At full throttle it burns about two litres an hour, this heats up my shop fairly quickly. At a normal rate I'm running at about 1l/hour to sustain the temperature in the shop. Your design of blowing the oil in with the air was the key. I shoud have paid more atttention to the oilburner channel where this is also shown as well. (I'm a long-term subscriber of it ;-)
As an afterthought, do you think there could be a difference in energy content between waste motor oil and vegoil?
Not sure with veg oil Leo, I'm sure it would probably be the same output. Have watched your mk 3 video. Be careful with that damper on your fan as restricting the air in might burn it out. Also a homemade filter is a must to stop your valve clogging up.I have never had any issues with mine in 2 years now and thats just with pvc pipe and household sponge. Great idea being able to burn wood and oil.Thats how i built mine but now ive got everything set up so all i have to do is empty my used engine oil into the filter outside and thats it. Very little handling and just top up my tank with the drum pump inside. Plus the work effort is so much greater with wood in going out to bring it home,chainsawing it up,splitting,storing,drying it out and cleaning out the heater of ash. Would strongly recommend a speed controller on your fan rather than the damper. can you send me the details of the fan because i think yours is slightly bigger than mine. (volts,Amps or part no.)I can then calculate what size potentiometer/variable resistor you could connect across the fan to slow it down.Good job pal! Olly.
Yup, I also think my fan is slightly bigger.
It is rated 12V, 0,6A so not really a very big fan at all but with a straight tube into the burnchamber it provides enough airflow to keep the fire going. And then my entire stove acts as the secondary burn chamber.

When I watch you guys build the oil heaters . They all use plastics for oil container. They should be metal YES?
Ideally yes, I think most heater builds are designed for a particular space and can take many attempts from trial and error and making advancing changes to get it right. With this in mind most of us tend to use what we have lying about and make safer and more permanent changes to the design when we're happy with that is exactly how we want it to function. Like mine, I still have more advancing changes to make and the plastic oil container will be replaced for stainless steel.
It ant pretty mate. It may need a few sanding discs to polish it up.
Tell me if the flame goes out does the oil know to stop flowing too.
Yes I agree Jim its not a looker. Good point about the oil flow and at the moment I would not leave this running unattended. I do however plan to fit a flame sensor with a solenoid to cut off the oil supply when I get it running more efficiently(blue flame) and an over temperature to cut off the oil supply also. I have uploaded a video recent to this one showing the blue flame achieved.
Where the heck do you get waste oil? I never have excess oil in my life besides an oil change every couple months.

Hi Jock, sorry for the late reply,Like bernie said, I did get the fan from an old battery drill charger. Only because it was the only way i could burn minimum amount of oil to keep the temperature down as my workshop is only 11ft x13ft. I did start off with similar burners you see other great youtube builds but the heat output and fuel consumption was rediculous for my size of workshop. If your building one yourself let me know and i can give you more info or help. Remember also that building a filter and storage outside for the oil is so important as handling the oil as little as possible in a must.Cheers. Love ya title! Olly.

would be great if you made a short ongoing video of the build. Making everything temporary is the best way so you can easily make alterations, especially the burner, mine has to be slightly tilted(unlevel)for some reason. If your heater is going to be smaller than mine i would strongly recommend a variable resistor on the fan to easily alter the air intake if you havn't got a variable power supply. Cheers Jock.

@@fixitmakeit72 yes but with a 47 kg propane bottle. Twin wall flue, and the same drip feed system. My burner is inside rather than on the outside
You can obviously slow the drip down and if you get a speed controller for your fan to slow that down you can reduce the heat Kaz.

No. It's nice to get that blue flame as it means next to no smoke and max efficiency but also quite trying in the process. My advice would be to get your preferred temperature output and maybe try for that blue flame but don't be too disappointed if you struggle to achieve it.

Have tried to find it Jack but cant find the exact one I had bought. have you thought about getting a hand held hand infra red one while your building yours and then you will know min/max temps your dealing with when its running. mine will read temps up to 999c but I don't run it any higher than 210c which would of been easier to find a lesser temp display and compatible temp. probe.

He is a staff cross with something we don't know but he is my pride and joy. If I'm seen without him poeple ask where he is as I take him work,fishing,snooker and on all holidays. Recycling motor oil is pollution......do you not realize a volcano puts out "pollution" then the plants eat it and make oxygen.. So keep paying your overlords for the electricity and let them make the pollution then sell it to you instead of you making it and having heat for free...

You can also with your set up Jack run your stove at about 150 degrees c to the 300 degrees c you are running now by fitting a speed controller to your fan and slowing your oil drip down more if you find it a little too warm.
