I watched this movie because of your video. I didn't want to watch it when it came out because I thought it was cool to hate it. It's funny/stupid how you do things as a young person. It reminds me of what you said about the first 10 minutes of the movie's dialog. The characters language show how small and immature her world is before she grows emotionally/intellectually. I remember talking like a complete tool as a young person and catching myself in old habits as an adult. Thanks for the excellent suggestion on the movie; I really enjoyed it.
One thing you mentioned that I found interesting was when you noted how light the characterization was for Vanessa, Jennifer Garner’s character. For me, there is actually a good bit of character there but it’s all in really subtle things like her clothing, her general body language, the way her house is decorated and a handful of throwaway lines or changes in tone of voice. She’s sweet and well meaning but very prim and proper and has somewhat of a high maintenance/controlling personality. Her home is this very classy but standard, and conservative white/beige palette which does not seem in line with Mark’s sensibilities as we learn more about him. Juno even teases him a little bit when despite having that huge house, he is only designated a single room (the only room with any variation in color) and when Mark strays off from the adoption meeting to play guitar with Juno, you can slightly pick up on her irritation that he strayed off and she very passively reprimands him for doing so. There’s also Mark’s throwaway line about how Vanessa gets on his case if he’s not visibly working when she comes home indicating a lack of trust she has in him managing himself. There’s also the level of thought she puts into the paint for the baby’s room despite Mark’s best efforts to derail the conversation. I also love the paint splattered Alice In Chains shirt she has on hinting at a part of her that was more casual and on Mark’s level. To be clear, I’m not saying the character of Vanessa is a bad person or that she’s a bitch, but you can see how those particular traits alongside Mark’s maturity issues made for a kind of toxic pairing that was always likely to go up in smoke. That’s one of the things I love about this movie. You have Juno’s whimsical antics but you also have this subtle drama about a married couple of the rocks and a midlife crisis playing in the background.

Something this didn't cover that I think was hugely important was the relationship between Juno and Bleeker. For most girls my age, this was the first time we'd seen a guy be genuinely respectful and loving towards girls like ourselves. This was at the end of the romcom era, when most male characters acted inappropriately towards women, intersecting with the Megan Fox era of objectification. To see Michael Cera representing what we all desperately wanted in a partner was groundbreaking. He doesn't push Juno's boundaries, and he is supportive and kind even when she pulls away. It showed us that we could have that too.
Only downside of Juno for me is Elliott's personal trauma throughout this time. I'm glad he's in a better place now mentally

Juno is a comfort movie of mine. As others have said, the only negative is Elliot’s struggle with being in this movie. So, I’m really really happy you made the point to highlight how fantastic his performance was because it was probably incredibly triggering to have to engage in the material in the way they did
Watched it when I was 15 and it was one of the first teen films I felt like I actually saw myself in. I’ve seen it maybe 10 times now and I’d never noticed the changes in Mark’s cloning until you mentioned it! The subtle things go a long way in this movie
I remember buying Juno on DVD at a gas station during a road trip. I heard a lot about it before and knowing that I would be bored for the next 3 hours decided to take the plunge and buy it.
I'm so glad I did. It still gets me when I watch it to this day. I don't know if it makes sense, but this movie and The Silver Linings Playbook both got me to step out of my comfort zone with movies and watch a lot of things i thought i never would.
I know exactly what you're talking about. There's nothing quite like that first film that actively broadens your horizons. Weirdly enough, that film for me was Fantastic Mr. Fox!
I saw it at a friend's house when I was in my very early teens. It was an easy sell given that I've always been obsessed with stop motion animation. I was expecting a fun kids movie with cool animation. What I was not expecting was to be blown away by a distinct vision and style, in a way I hadn't experienced previously.
That was definitely a turning point for me, as I've been chasing the high of unique experiences like that ever since. If you feel the way about Juno that I do about Fantastic Mr. Fox, you probably cherish that film a lot. I hope my video did it justice!
I loved Juno growing up. It was my first favorite movie, the first film I watched multiple times. It's the movie that made me a massive fan of Elliot, and made me wanna watch all their films.
as someone who absolutely has never wanted kids i found myself oddly relating to Vanessa the adoptive mother alot when rewatching as an adult, even if we dont have basic facts like "she likes music..." i think the way she is acted and written shows a certain disposition, has been let down and shes scared to get her hopes up again, yet feels such yearning and hope for things to go better this time. i loved her over preparedness and felt disgusted at her husbands complete disinterest... i think alot of us have been there. So she doesn't have facts... instead id say she has feelings, i felt she was very well rounded tbh. As a youth i related to Junos tomboyish, rebellious naivety and goofiness, but as an adult... i feel worn down by life, disappointment, reality and my own neurotic nature, but still secretly long for things to finally just work out... and against my own desire to give up, i tend to put alot of effort into everything, even if it leads to nothing. Its funny to grow up as the juno type of girl, then end up relating to this very anal, perfectionist character in adulthood, but i do.
....also totally related to junos dad bc i scoff at todays kids but love their flair ha!
The lack of the adoptive mom I feel is entirely intentional. Throughout the movie, Juno repeatedly states that she doesn’t want anything to do with the baby, which mirrors the mom. Besides the birth, this also is shown with Juno actively trying to avoid the mom in the mall scene. The adoptive dad in this sense ultimately comes across as kind of a red herring
I'm only 17 so this movie was before my time, but it still feels really nostalgic to me because my mum practically raised me on the soundtrack when i was a kid and i know every single song by heart. It's also just a really good movie and still manages to be relatable today even though it does have it's cheesy 2000s moments. Love it
I just love this movie, I watched it recently and I don't know what I don't like about it but at the same time I love it, I want to watch it several times and I want people to watch it too. It's a little bit crazy but so charming and it makes me feel like it's real people living a real situation. Idk, I love it even more everytime I watch it.

Why is that you hate woman?
Perhaps the start of the movie has such crude / cringe language at the beginning as this represents the juvenile state the main character is in, and after she becomes pregnant everything has to change, and so does the movie.
I remember seeing this in theaters. OLD. Straight to eBay for a burger phone.

This movie captures being a teen in that period of time really well
In 1984, I had a friend, a fellow sailor in the Navy who I was stationed with and worked with. She claims she became pregnant during her first intercourse, and she decided to place her baby for adoption. She chose a couple who agreed to adopt her baby before it was born. She gave birth to her son, and right there at the delivery, the adoptive parents changed their minds. So, my friend kept her son and raised him as a single mother. Watching Juno, I remembered my friend, I remembered sitting in her living room, my ears clanging because her little boy crept behind me on the sofa and boxed my ears. We had a falling out after she slept with a guy I was dating, I said in very Juno-esque fashion, "You two can have each other." after he called me, trying to apologize for it. I was happy for the adoptive mother character in the film, how she in the end was allowed to adopt Juno's baby as a single mother who proved that she could be as independent as Juno's personality was.

This movie came out when I was a junior in high school, and I even remember seeing it in theaters with my friends during winter break. Its not my favorite film, but it’s weirdly nostalgic for me. Whenever I watch it, I’m instantly transported back to high school in all of its late 2000’s glory 😂 There was even a couple at my school who dressed as Juno and Paulie for Halloween senior year.

Juno is by far, my favorite movie of all time. I have such strong feelings about it that I have only watched it once and could never find the courage to watch it again.
This is one of those movies that is not a forever favorite BUT holds a nostalgia forever when you view it or remember it..i was 16 when i viewed it.
I just watched the movie as a 24 year old who’s pregnant and not keeping it and I honestly relate to it.
I love Juno. I just rewatched it recently. I like to do a six degrees thing when I spend a day watching films, so I was either gonna watch Jennifer’s Body or Hard Candy next. I opted w/ Hard Candy and the parallels between Mark and Juno and Jeff and Hayley… Juno and Hayley both even wear a red hoodie.

I'll have to take your word on Juno holding up because I remember seeing it in the theater due to the massive hype and how my audience laughed just once. And it's been too long to even remember what line/scene it was. But I do remember the disappointment and bewilderment I had leaving the screening that the movie had been praised to the heavens when I felt every line, character and situation was as forced as it was overwrought. And I've felt that way about every film Diablo Cody has written. It's why I was devastated when I found out she was writing the Alanis Morissette musical (my favorite artist of all time) and that the eventual criticisms were that it was over yet underwritten. But she won a Tony just like she won an Oscar for Juno. It's amazing how she, imo, continues to fail upwards. So, I'll just take your word that it's still essential viewing but just watching this video gave me the same sense of cringe I originally felt in the theater. Not because your take is wrong. You have stated your opinion with clarity and finesse, but because the clips reminded me why I vowed to never watch the movie again and even recemented that stance. Still, I'm new to your channel and am loving your content even if I don't always agree. You have a bright future and just be patient because you will eventually get the views and subscribers you deserve!

Don’t forget Jennifer gardener. You can see the pain in her eyes during the first interview. I also got from her that that batmens character was responsible for the other backing out. Also when she thinks the baby didn’t like her in Juno’s stomach. Genius to me.
When Juno came out I was 17, so I identified with the teen characters. I rewatched it recently, now in my mid 30s, so I saw myself (or a way way worse version of myself) in the Jason Bateman character - but I also aspire to be as sweet and supportive as J.K. Simmons' character when I am slightly older still. I think a film that gives you something different over the course of over a decade can definitely be said to be hold up.
While I *was* in the right age range for this movie, I was 14. But I remember not liking it because I bought into the purity culture and felt it was cringey to have teen pregnancy be a neutral, main focus of the film. But I watched it a few years later. I don't remember when, but I think I was around 18? I once again in my life, regret not watching it when it actually came out. 😂
It *does* start out as annoying, but also does quickly grow on me. Even when I was "protesting" the movie I was *absolutely* *enthralled* with the soundtrack! 🥰 I also agree, it felt weird that the adoptive mom felt very one deminisional.

I love this style of film script, where everyone is hyper smart in dialogue beyond what would be reasonably expected. lol. It makes this all the better when it's all dropped to deliver something really gut-punching. That "Actually, I try really hard." line was my favorite.
I was talking to my girl about this movie just the other day and one thing that stood out was the soundtrack. Incredible. I was about to move to Canada for grad school from Australia when this movie dropped.
I watched Juno when it came out on DVD at my mother’s Starbucks store at 8 years old. She didn’t know how to talk to my twin brother and I about sex, and the twee-ness was incredibly appealing to boot. I watched it about twenty times before literally doing drag as Juno during Halloween.
It’s certainly one of a few films that marked a shift in a certain comedic sensibility around that time. I’m happy that Elliott has found peace from that time.
My older sister made me sit in the room with her when she watched it when I was anywhere from 5-8 years old. Clearly too young to understand the dialogue, implications, and storytelling of the film, it was boring to me. That being said, I’ve thought about it a lot now and then over the years and have always wanted to rewatch it. I was confused while watching the movie, but it was still impactful to my developing brain, both in soundtrack and imagery. I still think about the one on one conversations Juno would have with the adoptive father in the film. The tension and uncomfortableness really stood out to me. I don’t remember the ending of the film. Looking even more forward to rewatching it now that I’m in my twenties, thanks for the recommendation

My mum and I loved Juno when it came out. Especially my mum! At the time, she was a university lecturer teaching student midwives. She would steal my DVD (with my permission! 😂) to discuss with them early pregnancy symptoms. All the because of the "Are your nipples real brown?" girl 🤣🤣🤣

I'm not sure if this matters anymore but as I read through Elliot's book he spoke about how refreshing playing Juno was. He then wrote about how awful promo for the movie was extremely sad when the shooting ended because of how much he enjoyed playing the character while closted. I'm not sure how many people know about that and how gratifying it was for him at the time.
What I find funny about the film is the protagonist's name which is Juno. She was named after a Roman goddess associated with family, marriage, and fertility. Her Greek equivalent is Hera 😂.

I watched this today for like the 5th time and it’s wonderful as the first time! I am just realizing tho that Mark was a bit of a perv cause he was clearly flirting with juno who was only 16.
I'm 17 ( so like one when the movie came out lol ) and only watched Juno yesterday ( though I'd seen clips of it and heard the soundtrack before ) and without the feeling of nostalgia I can with confidence say it holds up. Im surprised to see that some people think it's a pro life movie though? I don't really know if that was anyone working on the movies intentions, but it came across as the opposite to me. I feel like pro choice also encompasses the idea of women's choices in general, and being too scared/ just not wanting to get an abortion is perfectly fine ( I know that if i was in Juno's place being her age and all i would at least get cold feet at the prospect of getting an abortion, even though I'm not anti abortion or anything .. ) Abortion isn't framed as an easy way out nor is actually giving birth to the child and giving it up, to me they were both shown to be complicated, because unwanted pregnancy is just that, complicated. Also I really liked the adoptive mums character, and i feel like a lot of her characterisation was through implications, and the fact that she mirrors Juno. Juno is young and unprepared, adoptive mother ( I've forgotten her name lol ) feels like the role is meant for her, but isn't blindly running into it, if anything she's overly prepared and excited ( if a bit restrained bc of the prior experience ) - she's good with kids, is financially stable and all. I think she appears slightly distant because Juno is maintaining that distance, since she wants nothing to do with the baby's life. Anyway I've written too much and forgot if i had a point

@@lcdubs7847 a lot of people referring back to when a now married person was in a role would call them by their newer last name, if you get what i mean, so i dont understand why you wouldn't call him elliot. plus, elliot knew at the time that he wanted to transition and become a man, so the idea of elliot existed at the time. its a sign of respect to refer back to them as elliot instead of disregarding it
How could a man portray a teenage girls struggles so well? It baffles the mind, the man who played Juno just melts into the role so thoroughly you cant barely even tell its a man. I mean when I look at Juno, I see nothing but a girl/young woman, not even a hint of masculinity. Stunning.

The questionable moments namly Juno and Mark were intentional. It's a good show of how pretory behavior can go unoticed by a teen until it's too late. Luckily, juno got out of it okay. I watched this as a teen, and I can say it went over my head. Now that I am older, i can say Mark and Juno are a causenary tale, teach your teens to find the suttle actions of a preditor when an adult wants to be friends with them. As most often, the adult is being predatory.

All I can remember about this movie is Elliot Page before transitioning and hamburger phone, it's a product of the 2000s but still worth watching
i would like to rant on this movie a bit if yall dont mind. i watched this when i was really young, a few years after it came out (i was only 5 when it was released) and it had an impact on me that i didn't really understand at the time. i was born female, i was socialized female, i was treated female, but i had times where i was a kid where i realized that i did not think female. i didn't understand why i had to be a woman and why every other girl around me was so accepting of their role. i pushed these thoughts aside, i kept living my life as a cis woman until the day i turned 18. i went to college, i started changing, i experimented with the way i look and dress and act. i started taking testosterone and felt great. but i was at an extremely vulnerable and volatile place in life, and got with someone who was a terrible partner and worse person. and i had my first pregnancy scare. i sat in a park at midnight while my friends and partner were laughing somewhere else, and i sat on that swing and stared into the distance for at least an hour. i knew the very real possibility that i was pregnant (thank god i wasnt), and i was frozen in fear because of the ramifications that would come of it. i couldn't care for a child and i couldn't give it away if it was my only option. and then i realized. i'd been pushed into a female role again. every day spent separating myself from my past and my upbringing as a woman had failed, because under the law, under society, under my family, i was female and that's all that i was. and then i remembered this movie, and i watched it, and i was in a puddle of tears, alone. because i knew how elliot felt filming this movie, and that this movie, in its own way, is fundamentally about being transmasc. it's about the pain of being known only by the single letter on your birth certificate, however you identify. juno isn't gendered in any way using aesthetics, music, or even film language. it's just about being a person forced into a role that you never wanted to be in. and that's why i love it.

Elliot Page is a sweetheart. He was so good in Juno and it's one of my favorite indie movies.

I'm a trans guy, and I was pregnant as I found my identity. It was nightmarish. Elliott gives me so much... comfort, as a human that exists. I hope he's healed from this experience, and I hope he will someday be something he can look back on without pain.

This movie definitely doesn't age well for me because the pregnancy isn't really shown to have struggle, it's just talked about, and the Juno character in particular is unbearable. They're like New Girl's main character times 10 but smug. Yes, Jason Bates character is a creep and idiot but his character isn't the lead and praised. Juno on the other hand treats people kind of crappy.

Juno is definitively not worth remembering. It's utterly forgotten by now, and only remembered because of Ellen Page's transition into Elliot. The acting was uniformly excellent but the storyline was so contrived, phony, and fake and Juno's character utterly implausible. The film was a fluke of success. And the manner in which abortion was treated in this film was outrageous on the surface and offensive to those who have ever considered abortion or actually had one performed on them.
It's a little crazy to me watching the movie now, well after Elliot came out and a good 13 years since the last time I saw it, just how...obvious it is that Elliot is a guy. Like, yeah he's playing a teenage girl and at the time hadn't fully come to terms with his identity, but I just can't see him for a second as a cis girl. He's a guy playing a girl. I guess that's probably how he felt. Happy late Trans Visibility day

It’s worth remembering, Had some good scenes, had some scenes that didn’t date so well but it’s impossible now for all the humor to hold up in the movie these days if you have an at least 10 year old movie….. but there were a lot of good scenes with great acting and great dialogue, Jason Bateman was perfectly cast, Ellen was awesome, I’m speaking in past tense mind you, and Michael Cerah always kills it…. it was weird seeing Ellen utter homophobic slurs, I think she had an issue with that while filming….. please no one get too hung up on my pronoun usage, I’m talking about a specific time
even if you're talking about a past event, it's still a common courtesy to not deadname or misgender a trans person, it's really not that hard.

Nothing wrong with enjoying the movie (it is very funny and it gives you 2000s nostalgia) but I PERSONALLY find the adoption narrative a bit disturbing and kinda triggering, especially for women who had to give up their babies for adoption or were even forced to do it because they were young and manipulated by adults, which led to ptsd.
The adoptive mom in this film is so needy and annoying.
I've had beef with this film since I first watched it like 6 years ago because infant adoption isn't ethical and Diablo Cody saying "that's what she would have done if she were the main character" rubbed me the wrong way. The best solution for Juno was abortion tbh

Whats wrong with infant adoption? Like yes I agree that abortion would have been a better choice in this situation but adoption isn't bad either. Also if juno aborted there would be no movie and it is a completely rational decision juno and her parents make.
Movie is unwatchable trash. Name drop the Melvins but don't include any of their music in the film nor soundtrack. Ellliot paige is not believable as a pregnant girl. Bad actor. Rainn Wilson is painfully unfunny. Jennifer garner is unbearable as a way too serious person in her 30s. Jason Bateman and Michael cera can't even save this garbage film. 0/10.
