  • In late June 2006, a composite unit, drawn from the Special Boat Service and the Special Reconnaissance Regiment, launched Operation Ilois. Although the initial phase of the operation went as planned, it was during the exfiltration phase that the force was ambushed and became pinned down.
Despite their not being a Q.R.F. on hand, a Platoon of Gurkha's was rushed forward to reinforce their counterparts in the UKSF and, under the cover of British and American Artillery and aircraft, the SBS-SRR-Gurkha force managed to disengage and get to safety.
However, this was not the end of Operation Ilois, as two members of the UKSF contingent were Missing in Action as a result of the ambush, leading to a group of British Paratroopers being flown back into the area to try and find the two soldiers.
This video is dedicated to the memory of Captain David Patton and Sergeant Paul Bartlett.

    Hi all,
Just wanted to add a small bit of information that I wasn't able to fit into the video.
During the ambush, a third S.B.S. trooper was wounded, whilst another from the S.B.S. was awarded the Military Cross - Britain’s third highest Military decoration - for actions during the engagement. Unfortunately, the full details / citation for the Military Cross haven't been released to the public.
    Thanks,
    LfE

True statement; however, one of the most basic tasks of a leader...as the ambush was initiated, and the fire fight took place...is to know where all your people are and what they are doing in the fight from start to finish. Special Forces or basic infantry. They were there for I will assume hours before they were extracted....and they took a headcount "After they landed?" Yes, it happens.....it never should.

@@holmganghamburg : My query was directed at DM, not at you my friend. He was not asking questions but merely sneering at British troops.
I too find this story questionable. My guess is the SF went into a village in the early hours to capture the Taliban leaders.
Due to noise or disturbance, this raised many of the Taliban in the village. The ensuing fire fight, made it difficult to extract and the narrow alleyways made the escape of the two Taliban easier. If they had been in open fields, or desert they could have been fired upon.
This would account for not being able to call in artillery or air assets to aid them, as doing so would destroy the village and any innocent people there.
From what I understand, the Afghans make the walls of their compounds very thick, so resistant to rifle fire.
The Landrovers may have been left on the outskirts of the village and more vulnerable to attack.
Conducting a head-count back at base, is where I think this story falls down. Why wait? Why not conduct it during the evacuation?
Waiting until the following morning to return in greater force, also seems strange.
Picking up a heat signature, from the two bodies that had being lying in the open all night, also seems strange.
What I have said is conjecture but the story as told in the video, I find unbelievable. If the troops had been caught out in the open, the artillery and air assets could have been used. I doubt if British troops would be content, to leave their comrades to the tender mercies of the Taliban overnight.
To me, with all due respect to the video producer, this story just does not add up.
