Someone commented she is nowhere at 17 and by this age Maria Sharapova had already won a slam. It's true but the days of teenagers winning Grand Slams are gone. Tennis is a much more competitive sport nowadays. Sharapova winning the US Open in 2006 was the last time a teen won a Grand Slam. Currently there are only 5 teens in the top 100 and they are all 19 years old. The best ranked is Russia's Daria Kasatkina at 25. The best ranked 17-year-old is USA's Catherine Bellis, ranked 120. Sharapova's precocity should not to be expected from anyone. Given that, one should always be cautious with these "future stars". Many great junior players were not great adult players and many great adult players were not great junior players.
You're forgetting that female Tennis is currently at a shit level where everyone can upset everyone because the level of play from the top players isn't that high.
What happened then..its 2018! Her athleticism was incredible for age then. Hope she makes it eventually, some players' careers dont really get going til they are in their mid 20's. All the best Maria.
Although she played NAIA, she ended up quite successful at that. While the dream of becoming a world #1 wasn't in the cards, she got a college education and got to play four years of college tennis. Not bad, it certainly could have been worse! For the vast majority of athletes, 12 years old is simply too young to predict where they will be at 18 or 25. Physical development, introduction to the "real world," shifting priorities...so much goes on between 12 and 20. Anyway, a decade on, it seems that tennis didn't treat this girl too badly, at least in some ways.
Not true. According to Herald Tribune, she was 89 in the world at 14, but had two wrist surgeries and unable to play for for two years. She still lives in Bradenton and tried to make a comeback. No longer with Bolletery Academy. Was never deported.
She seems determined & very hard working. I'm glad she wants to be her own person. It's only good to be the next Maria if there isn't a next Serena in the playing circuit. Like Maria though, she'll have more endorsements because of her looks, than most her peers would. That's the reason Under Armor is already capitalizing on her looks, and not her personality like that sales lady in the video claims. She does have a great physique for her age, so I see a future Grand Slams contender here.
Nonsense. There are lots of WTA players hotter than Maria who don't get the endorsements. She gets the endorsements first and foremost because she's one of the best female players to ever play the game.
I never heard of Maria before, but since I am a tennis nut and watch every match I can, I will definitely see a lot of her 5 years from now. You have a great game.
Next sharapova? As if. By 15, nearly 16 ( like this girl is) sharapova was already rapidly climbing into the top 200 and had already played in Indian wells. This girl recently lost to someone in an ITF event ranked barely inside the top 500.
Is she from Argentina? She is very arrogant on her comments about Sharapova. She needs to stop dreaming, be humble and open to learn from Sharapova, Ivanovic, Halep etc... What a character.
@Antonio: Maria Shishkina was not being arrogant, but showing a LOT of self-confidence. And you absolutely need to believe in yourself 1000% and have lots of talent to get to the top. Another thing: she is not dreaming, but working very hard to get closer to her objectives in tennis....
Did you watch and really listen to what they and she said?... probably not cause you had your mind set up from the beginning. They said she's from Kazakhstan. That she's been compared to a young Sharapova for whom she has a lot of RESPECT but she needs to focus on herself to become a good player which is true. Or she should be focusing on other player? ?.. Of course you were more preoccupied on been judgemental. There's nothing wrong to have self confidence. As we can see, she's working hard for it and she deserves it. Good luck to this girl!
Sharapova was 14 years old when she reached AO junior final. and 17 winning Wimbledon. Shishkina turns 17 in july this year. May be she is a late bloomer.
+The Necrocast Musician I understand what you're saying about her not being succesful however you cant judge as yet because many tennis players mature at later ages. Just look at Stanislas Wawrinka. In addition to this she has suffered 2 wrist injuries in 2014 and has only just been making a comeback. I am not saying that she will be a good player however I think that it is too late to write her off just yet.
Looking at how she lives it makes me look at my life and be thankful. I have at river to swim in, the side of the house to play against, and crazy family meals everynight. Chores to do everyday and can't forget fishing! My life isn't money like hers and I can't get professional help in my tennis but I'm happy! I still need to work on my servers though...😙
I'm here in 2020 and there is no information about her since 2016.. What happened to her? Too much recognition and exposure too early is usually a curse
She didn't quit. She's been playing college tennis and has been doing pretty well in ITAs. Who knows if she will try the pros again once her college career is over.
This video is 5 years old already. She would be 17 now. Does she even still play competitive tennis, because I've never heard of her. Maybe she'll be the next Anna Kournikova, but not the next Maria Sharapova.
LOL nice excuse. Anything to avoid the fact that you don't have talent, right? Francis Tiafoe is an 18 year old son of an immigrant. His dad worked as a janitor and he lived in a tiny studio with his dad and brother. He had less than you, but guess what? He's the next promising US tennis star. He's already a pro and famous players have already come out saying he is going to be the next star. Nadal invited him to be his training partner, that's how good he is. Stop making excuses. If you really had the drive you would be practicing tennis instead of bitching on the internet.
DO NOT put pressure on this very talented tennis player. Let her continue to evolve on her way and wait to see. And it doesn't need to be an immediate future. Let it (her) be and let's see what happens.
She almost died when she had blood clots in both her lungs.Probably caused by the side effects of the legal performing enhancing supplements that she's been taking most of her career. And she's not the only athlete taking these supplements.
His father is a boxer, just as Aggasi's is. Just another similarity. Definitely one of the next champions. Can't wait to see her raise championship trophies in the near future. Go Shishkina!
to all vile, envious, ignorant miserable people who are attacking this young woman. FYI she came from a very poor family from Kazakhstan. her parents were making $600 a month. they flew to Bradonton and she was tested by Nick Bollittiery who saw a great talent in Maria and offered her full scholarship. at the age of 14 she was offered sponsorship from her country. unfortunately she was badly injured and got 2 wrist operations. after that she couldnt play for 2 years. end of story. stop badmouthing this poor girl!
This is how crazy this actually is...if you had a single tennis coach that had players he coached that won 10 grand slams you would say...what a great coach!! But if he won 17 you would say this is one of the greatest tennis coaches of all time...ok...well NIck Bollettierri has coached and trained...and I mean trained players that have won 170 plus grand slams...greatest tennis coach in the history of the game forever...all time...case closed!!!
Poor girl has struggled this year. Only qualifying for 1 tournament out of the 13 she tried to qualify for and she lost in the 1st round in the only tournament she qualified for. Hopefully she turns it around!

Reminds me of something Sharapova said: "I'm not the next anyone, I'm the first Maria Sharapova."
Andres Porras nobody would care if the William sisters retire.I cant
Wait for that
Jerry Smith their not my weak women cause they don't belong to me
True. She said that because she was tired of people comparing her to Anna Kournikova.
I'd miss Sharapova. She has a fun playstyle. But sadly after injury trouble she's just not that good anymore because her serve turned into a weakness.
i'm the first h4rder10

2021 update. Changed her name to Maria Genovese and currently plays tennis at the Georgia Gwinnett College.

Never even heard of her
I hope she doesn't copy everything about Maria , the grunting was terrible , for tennis
Broke her wrist twice, so it set her back
She has never made it in the top 800 because she got sent back to back to Kazakhstan because they did not have a green card or visa.
