As long as they don't turn it into another Abuja with just highrise buildings but focus on manufacturing I think it will come to fruition. This is a good idea and I wish the developers all the best.
Building height is not a measurement for development. Nairobi, Mexico City, etc have far more taller buildings than Stockholm yet the latter is light years more developed than the former two.

Skepticism takes us to no where, we all just need to play our own parts of the bigger roles to make it a worthwhile venture. If Ocean City, Dangote Refinery are Innoson Motors are already succeeding, this will surely become a reality. The dark ages are over in Africa as Nigeria is positioning itself to give the desired leadership to our beloved continent.
I’m always a little skeptical of any projects in Africa due to the politics and a tendency to put the cart in front of the horse, but I think this has a very good chance of coming to fruition and succeeding! May not end up looking like the architectural renderings exactly but if it’s close that will be great for the Nigerian people! Corporations are always looking for the cheapest locations in which to manufacture but moving to another location is a huge expense that goes beyond wages for corporations seeking cheaper labor. First, a country needs to be politically stable. No country is going to invest hundreds of millions on a new manufacturing site if they think the risk of political turmoil (in any of it forms) will halt or interrupt production. Second, by having a designated area with its own power and water grid/supply is a must to insure uninterrupted production. Third, finished goods need to be able to be moved cheaply and quickly. By having rail, a port and an airport nearby should allow this. I’m glad to see a university is also included in the plan. This should provide these companies with good minds to hopefully allow more complex manufacturing and better paying manufacturing jobs down the road and will be a great source of hands on/ real world learning for students. Also glad to see a “green area”. Manufacturing jobs are drudgery and providing some nice recreational areas for its workers to enjoy their limited free time is vital. It doesn’t need to be Disneyland. It’s just needs to be something like Central Park is to NYC…a place for all people to escape and not just for managers or executives. A hospital is a good idea too. workers will know it’s not just a job but a job with better healthcare and hopefully such a project will eliminated some of the brain drain and keep Drs and engineers in Nigeria. This site should not only bring jobs but it will bring more jobs to the ports and airport and lots of small business to support the workers. As workers become more proficient they may open their own businesses and this is basically how capitalism starts. I hope for Nigeria this project exceeds expectations and glad to see that the politicians are playing a limited role!

I think it might have worked better to create existing industrial cities such as Aba , Owerri, Umuahia into the actual free trade zone and to expand rather than build a new city from scratch. The industries are already there so they just need to be given more robust infrastructure to support their growth. My only fear is that it ends up a white elephant project due to shortage of funds, hopefully that won’t happen but it would be less expensive and more sensible to develop and integrate the existing industrial and commercial centres into a free trade zone and use the funding to develop their infrastructure. That’s what China did. In order to compete and rival hong Kongo China turned the neighbouring city of Shenzhen into a free trade manufacturing hub and gave it the competitive advantage of being cheaper than Hong Kong, soon many Hong Kong businesses began to relocate there and that’s how shenzhen became a mega successful world class manufacturing hub. Aba in particular is in a very good position to play the same role as Shenzhen did to Hong Kong. In this case it will be to Port Harcourt.

In the last 20 years there have tons of these types of presentations. The only 2 that have had anything done is eko Atlantic and Lagos FTZ and neither is what was promised. With it's young population, Nigeria needs to first solve it's human capital problem. Companies educated qualified workers. That should be the focus. All these will happen once that is in place

The aim should be to provide the runway for private investors through infrastructure, then these things will fall in place based on viability. A place with 1 million people, for instance, will never be more viable than a place with 20 million unless it has more talented human resources. So scaling appropriately and solving for skilled labor deficits are the most crucial component. Also no one is going to give you money to build a 10-storey house if you have not shown you can build a one-storey house so these marketing displays are laughable.

To be honest and sincere,this project will not come to pass I have seen and heard about many projects like this in Nigeria but none of them didn't exist till tomorrow... The Centenary city in Abuja how far ? The Greater Port Harcourt City how far ? Then now this...
How could you conceptualize an entire state as a megatropolis just because some cities in the state are expanding? It's a misnomer to begin with. It makes no sense. So you foresee Onitsha swallowing up Nnewi and Awka. Certainly not in this lifetime. That's a pipe dream more in the realm of hallucination or fantasia than possibility or even probability. I don't want to be rude but if you think just with one economic hub (or even 10) you can rival China it means you have no idea of the scale of the industrial machine China has become. Just to give you an idea : China each year manufactures nearly 25 millions cars, the second country in car manufacturing is the US with about 10 millions. Not knowing you position in the food chain is not a good start.

@@DavidNkwa Yes, but it's impractical to have these many "largest in the world" or Dubia-tyoe projects which is why they fail or fall significantly short. The aim should be to provide the runway for private investors through infrastructure, then these things will fall in place based on viability. A place with 1 million people, for instance, will never be more viable than a place with 20 million unless it has more talented human resources. So scaling appropriately and solving for skilled labor deficits are the most crucial component. Also no one is going to give you money to build a 10-storey house if you have not shown you can build a one-storey house so these marketing displays are laughable.
The system in place will not allow such project to work but I’m waiting for the project to manifest anyway

I don't want to be rude but if you think just with one economic hub (or even 10) you can rival China it means you have no idea of the scale of the industrial machine China has become. Just to give you an idea : China each year manufactures nearly 25 millions cars, the second country in car manufacturing is the US with about 10 millions. Not knowing you position in the food chain is not a good start.
You have a point. 1 or 10 economic hubs in Nigeria may not rival China, but if 10 of the big manafacturing companies in China right now decide to manufacture in Nigeria, because if better policy and profit, it's such a rival to me.

It's unfortunate that series of iti bolibo governors in Abia state have destroyed our Taiwan, Aba. Their counterparts in Anambra equally neglected Onicha and Nnewi. However, the greatest shame is on us all, for allowing them the opportunity to do what they've done and gotten away with it.
