- *Originally Recorded on 3/15/2013, I would have gotten it up earlier but my first upload looked like a compressed pile of crap, at least from my computer it did.
This is a test of Mitchell, Indiana's Outdoor Siren System. Tests are conducted every Friday at 12:30. They have a Sterling M-5 and at least one Whelen Vortex. They may have another Vortex because I heard what sounded like one wind-up after this one did. Unfortunately, I couldn't hear the Sterling from this far away. I called the Mitchell City Police before the test as it was running kinda late. After I hung up, the siren went off. It sounded for a full, three minutes which was unexpected.
This siren is located on Sheeks Drive by some railroad tracks. Come to think of it, there are a lot of railroad tracks in Mitchell, but I haven't seen or heard a single train. There was also a bunch of construction workers working on someone's roof nearby. Watching their reaction when this siren went off was priceless...wish I had another camera (with zoom) to catch that. Up close, this Vortex put some insane echos. I might upload that video from my phone.
*I may be recording either a Whelen 2809 doing Hi-lo in Columbus, IN, or a Whelen 3016 (doing wail?) in Seymour during the annual tornado drill next week. I haven't decided yet, your suggestions definitely are welcome.
You gotta love the 435hz wail.
Thanks! Yep, they test at 12:30, I don't know why they go off later than everyone else though.
Its a DTMF code that tells the siren what to do.
Sounds epic when it echos facing away from the camera.
Yep, definitely one more somewhere. Did you ever find it?
Nope, not yet. I say there's a 50% chance there could be another one, but I still think it might just be an echo. But I'll keep looking if I pass by there.
And it sounds great
Wow that tornado it comming
Bruh its test not warning
It's just a test, not a tornado warning or smth.
+Dsrx100,you now that the whelen vortex was going to attack/wail but,it did but after it finised,it shuted down fast
You mean shutted
Nope. The only motor is the one used for the rotator.
wow this siren has been 8 years ago
Scared my mom with this once
Sometimes when there is a test on the toronado sirans I keep thinking it's a toronado warning. Don't you think?
It's a tornado spell it right next time 😠
good echo!
darn shame the wail doesn't go all the way up like the older controllers
In fact this is a 2020. Do you mean going up as being like a classic attack like the old ESC-864?
@Jonah Hall it's spelt heard
I know that this is a stupid question but are those mechanical siren
DUMASS PF COURSE DUMASS
+TaaleriPupu it's DTMF
Nice
Great siren! 👍
пх
sick sirens
How Do You Tell The Difference Between A Whelen Vortex And A Whelen 4004?
You can tell from the rotator box. If it has a square shaped motor cover, it's a Vortex. If it's circular, it's a 4000 series. If it's got a fin on the back, it's an older Vortex.
How do you get the DTMF frequencies?
+BOB!theGMObanana Radio Scanner monitoring a specific frequency, usually one used for fire or police dispatch.
+DSRX100 yes but how do you find out what frequency to set the scanner at?
+BOB!theGMObanana i know right and scanners are at least above $20.
+BOB!theGMObanana RadioReference.com Usually sirens are activated on a county fire frequency of some sort, but it's always different. You'll have to do research and program multiple frequencies.
+DSRX100 Is a Whelen Vortex a electronic or a fan siren? I'm curious since in Greencastle Indiana where I'm at they have these by the Wal-Mart, at the Jail, and at the National Guard armory. I was just curious as to what gives them that chilling noise.
This Vortex has a different attack tone
I meant to say Wail. collector rings
collector rings?

I love the Olympic Winter Games!
Me in my age group. Me and my friends. It’s as old as someone who can go.
Does anybody know what is that phone sound what some sirens make before they start howling??
TaaleriPupu They are DTMF Tones. They basically act as a radio transmission which activates the sirens for a certain tone and for how long. The siren cabinet has a receiver which picks up the DTMF tones, and then activates the siren accordingly.
The ones in Aubrey for me. Samantha, Alexis & Mia.
These things have a mile coverage? 2001 130: bite my 2 MILE coverage whelen!
440 Hz controller.
440hz doesn't exist.
Collector rings lol😂
