Peace - Timothy Keller [Sermon]

  • Tim Keller sermons via Gospel in Life: Christian peace is not the absence of troubles. It is a peace that is unshakeable even in the midst of troubles. During difficult times, Christians are called to remember the living God who works out all things for good for those who love Him. If we set our heart on anything besides God, we can lose our peace. But if our greatest love is the unchanging God, then our peace can never be taken from us.

We have had death threats and God's presence and joy was palpable in our home - and the tv news people who came to interview us felt it also. God has never deserted us through the most dark and terrifying times. I love You Lord.

When I was a child, I almost died in a mass murder. My life since has been one of permanent, severe injury. I understand PTSD. I do have the peace of God. I'm so glad that you have, too. I survived a suitcase bombing which was so powerful it shook the ground 1 1/2 miles away. Truly, God is sovereign. I pray that you won't flag in your awareness of that, and ask that you pray for me in that regard, too.

THE LORD "Weaving in HIS Plan admist of our Suffering, Trials etc " reminds me of Corrie ten Boom's Illustration of a Crown woven out of yarn, but she shows it upside DOWN to show what it looks like which is a Snarled up MESS and then she turns it over and it is a Beautiful Gorgeous Glowing Crown and THAT is What JESUS Does for US..HE IS Weaving EVERYTHING in our lives for HIS GOOD and HIS Purpose which is ALWAYS GOOD! Thank You, JESUS!!!

I was recently falsely accused of a crime by a smallish city Sheriff and spent a night in jail. It was terrifying. I did not sense God's presence or peace the entire time. I have been a born again Christian for 40 years. I read the Bible and pray (I could pray more). The adrenaline and other chemicals that stress causes were running amuck in my body. I understand and believe this sermon is accurate but what I don't understand is how can someone be in a peaceful state when the terror of the unknown is so palpable? When you know a fight in a cell made only of cement and steel could break out against you any second, ending in your face sucking pavement soaked in urine, gnawing on your own bloody busted teeth? Can anyone help me here? What am I missing? How could Paul have peace when facing torture?

No one seems to be willing to attempt to answer my question. Is it that no one is able or that Christians simply don't give a rip? I tell you, if I saw this question and I had the answer to it, I would answer it. That's just who I am.

I guess that peace isn’t an emotion in the first place. Of course, sometimes we can feel it, but it’s more in the knowing. You may not feel it in your body and your thoughts may be anxious, but the knowledge that the King of Kings is with you and on your side can bring peace in a sense where you can go through it. Knowing it will be alright. Knowing that God is and will be your defender. He lives in you and HE himself is perfect peace. If we constantly meditate on this it will settle more and more. Listen to the song “Peace” by Bethel and We the Kingdom. It says “When my mind is like a battlefield
And my heart is overcome by fear
And hope seems like a ship that's lost at sea
      My enemies on every side
And I'm tempted to run and hide
Your gentle whisper reaches out to me
      Peace
      Holds me when I'm broken
      Sweet peace
      That passes understanding
When the whole wide world is crashing down
      I fall to my knees
      And breathe in
      Your peace”

@@lorenasohl2939 First and foremost thanks for replying. I think you are correct. The peace is in the knowing and believing His promise to be with us in all things. I probably had false expectations. I read once that when Richard Wormbrand (sp") was being tortured, he simultaneously experienced the bliss of God. I thought that my Heavenly Abba Father would give me a palpable sense of his presence and protection. His ways are higher than ours and for some reason unknown to me He did not see fit to pour so much grace upon me that I would feel His presence despite the intense fear.

Hi George (I assume), I don't feel qualified to answer your question as I haven't experienced something as traumatic as you went through. But I hope that you do not hold God at a distance because of your experience. I would actually recommend bringing your disappointment and doubts to God through lamenting. The Psalms mirror what it means to lament. I recommend this because I've wrestled with God, bringing to Him my regrets, disappointments and grief. That season is a spiritual milestone in my life because I know through the period of lamenting that He has never left me nor forsaken me. And I'm sure that He did not forsake you when you were feeling terrified in that cell. Continue to talk to Him.

      Hi Yingzhi Beth,
The fact that you responded to my comment gives me hope that not all of the hearts of God’s people have grown cold. Your words are very encouraging. I pray that God richly blesses you.

Little by little my faith is being rebuilt. Recently I have been talking with God quite a bit more. I’m having trouble getting back to full trust mode though. I’ve come to the conclusion that (for me at least) it’s not an all or nothing state of mind and will. I’m at the “I believe, help thou my unbelief” stage.
I will look into the how’s of lamenting as per your suggestion. Knowing how to lament effectively is not something that is prevalent in our culture. I’ve certainly not learned how to do it in any meaningful way.

Thanks you for your kind and thoughtful words.

The question is not about stupid or smart, it's the 'we' that's the problem. Whether you are stupid or smart, your peace comes from within. God will know the difference. loveya

God is good and yet he did not destroy the devil or his angels?
The devil was allowed by Gad to torment Job?
The answer is that the garden of Eden had the fruits of temptation and God allowed it to grow so that we my humble our own selfish pride and have eternal life in his salvation. Placing our lives in God’s hands would not have happened if God did not allow for evil. True definition of evil is pride ,thinking you no longer need God because you are god. It’s like denying the breath of The Holy Spirit within you and that’s the reason we should never reject the existence of the breath of God within us. I believe many Christians anchor their belief that man has committed original sin and becomes sin and through the crucifixion God poured all of man’s sins onto our savior. Yes Jesus Christ paid the price of our sins so that we may willingly drink the blood of Jesus Christ and eat of his flesh. When Jesus healed the sick he always said your faith has made you well he did not say I have made you well or God has made you well. Eating the flesh and drinking the blood is anything but symbolic. Thinking that man is like dirt covered in God’s mercy is like cursing the breath of God within us.
God created us so that we may become like gardens allowing life to grow. Our savior is not our savior if we do not believe and The Holy Spirit is not The Holy Spirit unless we believe and God is not God unless we believe in Salvation and except it for real and not symbolically. We are the breath of God therefore we are Holy and through salvation we become with the truth and one with God.
Do you believe in the curse of sinful man or do you believe in the breath of God?. Do you believe in the symbolism of the blood and the flesh of Jesus or do you believe in the true flesh and blood? When Jesus said to the woman who had been bleeding, did you symbolically touch me their would no truth and if Jesus said to all that were heeled did you symbolically believe there there would be no truth. Tim’s sermons often reveal hidden truth denied by your denominational beliefs. Truths so fundamental they break the walls of different denomination and in essence bring us together in salvation. God works in mysterious ways because salvation belongs to all who have not denied the Holy Spirit within themselves.
