I get what he's saying but I'm a little cautious to make a promise to God that I know I'll break.

Hello there, don't be afraid. In fact, God expects that we will break our promises. Abraham did, with lying that Sarah was his sister, and having a son with Hagar. David did, with adultery and murder. Solomon did, with debauchery and turning away from God. Moses did, with his anger. Yet God always fulfills His side of the promise, and He will guide and raise you to eternal life if you trust Him even with your mistakes. He calls you knowing full well the baggage that you have, that's why He rescues you! :) Nobody was or ever can be perfect, except Jesus. That is why he had to die for us. When God calls you, He takes charge over you (1 Corinthians 1: 8-9, Isaiah 43, John 6:44, Jude 24). It's not in your power that you desire to know God, but His. And the Holy Spirit will strengthen you, and give you a new heart that is awake to the sin in you. Yet the flesh will soon be done with (thank God!). You might have a lot to struggle with (a 'sacred schizophrenia' as pastor John Piper calls it: www.desiringgod.org/messages/sacred-schizophrenia) until you meet Christ, but the Spirit in us is a guarantee that God has saved us, without any effort on our part, and we will live with Him in our new resurrected bodies, forever! I can't wait :)

We all break promises. God knows we are weak. He builds us through our sins and despite our weaknesses. It’s a perfecting process leading to fruition in Heaven.

Very nice sermon this is . But can somebody help me out here; Tim draws a straight line from Seth towards Abram. So Seths family knew the Lord and obeyd Him. But don't we get a big cut in between when the flood occurs ? Actually Terach is coming from Noahs son Sem . Assuming that Sem feared the Lord we cannot know if all the generations after him did , and there's quite a few , also in a time perspective. So how can we draw a line straight from Seth to Abram when there s a flood in between an many generations from which we dont know if they kept following the tradition of obeying the Lord.
Have I missed a bit Scripture somewhere ?

I am responding to a different sermon when Tim Keller explains what happens when someone interferes with your ministry. The comments were turned off. Your ministry becomes an idol: you become sad and melt down or you become incredible angry or something else. I want to know what the proper response? This happened to me and I melted down but I got out which I felt was the correct response. I felt the Holy Spirit had been sinned against. Otherwise I would have stayed and taken it. But I was a basket case for years.

I am a Christian man at the age of 41. I still don't understand the call. I have never received it.....I'm not sure how.

Pray to God, surrender your life to God, invite Him into your life and Make Him Lord if your life. And then be ready to blessed to be a blessing to others!

The fact that you are concerned you haven’t received the call can sometimes be a sign that you actually HAVE. Otherwise, you wouldn’t care.
The “call” (in this case, “conversion”) to Christianity doesn’t always hit like a bolt of lightning. Sometimes it slowly grows, like a fire from tiny twigs and leaves. But the important thing is this-God knows your heart, and if you truly believe His Son and His Word, you have been called-no matter how you feel, no matter your circumstances, no matter your own uncertainty or doubt. God can handle doubt (Thomas the apostle, even John the Baptist, among MANY others).
If by call you mean, His call for you to take up His cross and follow His will, the Lord may not call you to trek across Ur, but instead something like say hello to your neighbor. Something as simple as a “hello” can be the beginning cultivation to plant the seeds of faith. This can FEEL like trekking across Ur (as an introvert, it’s quite scary!!), but it’s not the magnitude of the call, but whether you’ll answer. And that itself is in God’s good time and will-you might “fail” a call, but God will not fail you.
