I like this cover. It's smooth and fresh sounding and her voice is amazing as always. She hasn't aged, either! I'm glad she is still recording, love her!
Se passaram os anos, uma voz elegante, uma mulher linda e talentosa e um sorriso no rosto permanece e vai permanecer!!! Linda!! Canção linda.... 💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘
Sadly there's a lot of young boys and girls which will never know what is a clean and soft rock like this one. Now all I hear where I live is brazilian funk, sertanejo universitário and gauchesca(from south of Brazil)...
People have been writing or saying in interviews that Osborne "feminized" this song. That's complete nonsense. People have been doing covers of songs without changing the pronouns for years, even decades. Why is that even an issue? It's a wonderful interpretation, sung by a pro who still has that golden, slightly raspy voice ("raspy" is a plus, BTW).
"Why is that even an issue?" Are you kiddin', man? These TH-cam woods are so full of jackasses that it's a small miracle whenever a literate, cogent comment, such as yours, sneaks through.
+tswrench You are correct. It's music. You don't like it, go to the next video. Not my favorite version of this song but it's still great. The Indigo Girls did a pretty great version.
lmfao has someone complained about that? Crazy. Usually people complain about when artists DO change the pronouns, because that's seen as meddling with the original song. To me it completely depends of the singer themselves, they might want to just sing the song, or more like act it as if they were living it. Joan Osbourne certainly knows what she is doing here and it's perfect.
@@garad123456 In folk music, it's a time-honored tradition to not shift the first-person narrator's gender regardless of who's singing it (of course, the practice of switching gender in songs that way is probably just as old). :)

The electric piano, drums and vocal inflection remind me of the version that Jerry Garcia used to play. There's a few videos of it on TH-cam. From what I've read Joan Osborne is a Deadhead, so it wouldn't surprise me if she was emulating that version.
Early one mornin' the sun was shinin' I was layin' in bed Wondrin' if she'd changed at all If her hair was still red Her folks they said our lives together Sure was gonna be rough They never did like Mama's homemade dress Papa's bank book wasn't big enough And I was standin' on the side of the road Rain fallin' on my shoes Heading out for the east coast Lord knows I've paid some dues Gettin' through Tangled up in blue She was married when we first met Soon to be divorced I helped her out of a jam I guess But I used a little too much force We drove that car as far as we could Abandoned it out west Split up on a dark sad night Both agreeing it was best She turned around to look at me As I was walkin' away I heard her say over my shoulder We'll meet again some day On the avenue Tangled up in blue I had a job in the great north woods Working as a cook for a spell But I never did like it all that much And one day the axe just fell So I drifted down to New Orleans Where I happened to be employed Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat Right outside of Delacroix But all the while I was alone The past was close behind I seen a lot of women But she never escaped my mind And I just grew Tangled up in blue She was workin' in a topless place And I stopped in for a beer I just kept lookin' at the side of her face In the spotlight so clear And later on as the crowd thinned out I's just about to do the same She was standing there in back of my chair Said to me "Don't I know your name?" She changed one word...from thirteenth century to fifteenth century poet...its impossible to say which poets either is refering to other than maybe Dante for Bob which seem to coincide
Nice rendition, Joan! Kind of a Memphis shuffle thing goin' on; I like it. For many years - decades actually - I thought Dylan, was singing "...split up on the docks that night with the feelin' it was best," instead of "...split up on a dark sad night with the feelin' it was best." I'm no Bob Dylan, but I kinda' like my version better...it's somehow more evocative. Call me Bob.
Dylan changed his lyrics all the time, and often the published lyrics weren't what he actually sang, and live concerts would be different from the album version. For example, "working for awhile on a fishing boat right outside of Delacroix" was at least once sung as "working for awhile at an airplane plant loading cargo onto a truck."
parafan - Interesting... Extra credit if you can name the artist and the song (without Googling) that produced this gem: You talk about day I'm talking 'bout night time When the monsters call out The names of men Bob Dylan knows And I bet Alan Freed did There are things in night That are better not to behold

If you're going to cover a song, you should reinvent it and inject it with something unusual and some emotion. This is very nice, but nothing about it makes me want to hear it again. Its just by numbers.
I agree. It sounded so low-key at first that I thought Joan was just going to build up to a more dramatic delivery in the final verses. But she never even hit any of the high notes in the song, just sang it the same monotonous voice all the way through, and completely missed the song's emotional core.
thats ok as more people like justin bieber...you should check him out...he is much more pedestrian and more akin to a non musical type of person...this is way to sophisticated for anyone that just wants to hear basic music
Been a fan for years but panimyming is not her skill. Only got to see her once in a cozy outdoor venue. She was quite pregnant and just did a couple songs to open.. then The Funk Brothers took over.
This is no easy song to cover despite the easy chords progression and even easier melody lines..it takes a lot of phrasing and rhythm ability if you want to go somewhere with it. Here, i'm sorry, i can't see any arrangement invention, no particular interpretation, just jukeboxing. But i can't say i'd be able to do better either, to be honest! So i'd listen to the record for free but i wouldn't buy it. Have a listen to the KT Tunstall cover to you know what i mean..
Still has those beguiling eyes. Is it me or her voice has become more beautiful
It gets deaper as you age, so in a way it gets better.

She was in Phil and friends in 2006. singing all dead tunes. Look it up it's great stuff
She is a deadhead and is a phenomenal talent. It has a slight feel to JGB versions but JErry was a little speedier than Joan is.
I love tou❤️
Joan... you are so beatifull😍
Diva👏👏👏
Meu Deus !!!! Essa mulher é linda de morrer !! Fantástica .

YOU IS SO BEAUTFULL I SEE YOU FROM BRASIL
Hi. Greetings from far east.
I love your God was one of us.
. Pardon me but are you a Christian?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎶🎶🎶
I could listen to her sing the phone book.
Early one mornin' the sun was shinin'
I was layin' in bed
Wondrin' if she'd changed at all
If her hair was still red
Her folks they said our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like
Mama's homemade dress
Papa's bank book wasn't big enough
And I was standin' on the side of the road
Rain fallin' on my shoes
Heading out for the east coast
Lord knows I've paid some dues
Gettin' through
Tangled up in blue
She was married when we first met
Soon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam I guess
But I used a little too much force
We drove that car as far as we could
Abandoned it out west
Split up on a dark sad night
Both agreeing it was best
She turned around to look at me
As I was walkin' away
I heard her say over my shoulder
We'll meet again some day
On the avenue
Tangled up in blue
I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much
And one day the axe just fell
So I drifted down to New Orleans
Where I happened to be employed
Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat
Right outside of Delacroix
But all the while I was alone
The past was close behind
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind
And I just grew
Tangled up in blue
She was workin' in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer
I just kept lookin' at the side of her face
In the spotlight so clear
And later on as the crowd thinned out
I's just about to do the same
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me "Don't I know your name?"
I muttered somethin' under my breath
She studied the lines on my face
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces
Of my shoe
Tangled up in blue
She lit a burner on the stove
And offered me a pipe
I thought you'd never say hello, she said
You look like the silent type
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century
And everyone of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin' coal
Pourin' off of every page
Like it was written in my soul
From me to you
Tangled up in blue
I lived with them on Montague Street
In a basement down the stairs
There was music in the cafes at night
And revolution in the air
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died
She had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside
And when finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin' on
Like a bird that flew
Tangled up in blue
So now I'm goin' back again
I got to get to her somehow
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenters' wives
Don't know how it all got started
I don't know what they're doin' with their lives
But me, I'm still on the road
Headin' for another joint
We always did feel the same
We just saw it from a different point
Of view
Tangled up in blue
She changed one word...from thirteenth century to fifteenth century poet...its impossible to say which poets either is refering to other than maybe Dante for Bob which seem to coincide
