Joan explained the video in her VH1 special: It's about a woman she knew who found legitimate work as a maid, but would always fall to the wayside due to her drug habit, and eventually turned to prostitution to survive. Joan said that despite her personal struggles, the woman always had a sunny attitude and held on to her Catholic upbringing. Joan started calling her "St. Teresa" as a result, and the nickname stuck. That's why the video contains religious iconism (lambs and levitation, the latter being the real St. Teresa's first miracle of sainthood), plus sexual references, as well as numerous drug references (grass carpet, body turning into flowers, heartbeat strawberry, etc).
I've seen Joan alive at Modena for Warchild (with Luciano Pavarotti) and never heard of her before. This song was so special for me. it gave me goosebumps from the start. I just love her voice...
Loved her when I was younger, found out I still do! Forgot just how beautiful she is!! Did I mention sexy as well? She is just amazing! Gonna go on a Joan Osborn Bender Tonite!! I had a stroke 15 years ago and am still stumbling onto things and remembering associations with things! Used to cuddle with a very special person to this album! More will be revealed!!!
Sit down on the corner just a little crime When I make my money got to get my dime Sit down with her baby wind is full of trash She bold as the street light dark and sweet as hash Way down in the hollow leavin' so soon Oh St. Teresa higher than the moon Reach down for the sweet stuff when she looks at me I know any man sees you like I see Follow down the side street movin' single file She say That's where I'll hold you, sleeping like a child Way down in the hollow, leavin' so soon Oh, St. Teresa, higher than the moon Just what I've been needin', feel it rise in me She say Every stone a story, like a rosary Corner St. Teresa, just a little crime When I make my money, got to get my dime Way down in the hollow, leavin' so soon Oh, St. Teresa, higher than the moon You called up in the sky You called up in the clouds Is there something you forgot to tell me Tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me Show me my Teresa, feel it rise in me Every stone a story, like a rosary
One of us might of enlightened us to Joan Osborne's talents.... but like this song everything else off that album was so much better!! Love this version of this great tune! Thanks everyone! Hope I get to see her live in Ponte Vedra!!
Learning how to replicate the birimbau from the original recording with the guitar made me a really interesting guitar player, and practicing her vocals made me an interesting (I won't say good, but interesting) singer. This song is a masterclass.
How can you improve on a great song? Simple, you give it the Transatlantic Sessions treatment! It doesn't get any better!
By the time she hits the chorus for the first time my eyes are already watering. This music gets to your soul.
right same here....looks like that song has a come back, hear it everywhere...Bless the 90ies!!!!!!!!
True
I feel bad for all the people who have never seen this! This is perfection!
Indeed.
Hauntingly beautiful. She is so underrated, but true music connoisseurs KNOW JOAN and her talent!
One of my very favorite female musicians.
The combination of Joan and these amazing musicians takes this version to a sublime level. A match made in music heaven.
"one of us " might be a worldwide hit, but this is far beyond
As much as I liked One of Us, there are easily 3-4 songs on that album that were significantly better.
"Crazy Baby" is absolutely wonderful.
Crazy Baby is simply a master piece
Fully concur...My favorite from her!!
I agree! One of us was not even her best. Many songs on that album were better.

the Transatlantic Sessions don't get nearly the attention they deserve. I have yet to hear a bad one. This is exceptional.
Absolutely spot on. The music is sooo rich.

Wonderful subtle playing from Lunny, Douglas, and McGoldrick. These transatlantic sessions are setting standards that may never be equaled.

Sit down on the corner just a little crime
When I make my money got to get my dime
Sit down with her baby wind is full of trash
She bold as the street light dark and sweet as hash
Way down in the hollow leavin' so soon
Oh St. Teresa higher than the moon
Reach down for the sweet stuff when she looks at me
I know any man sees you like I see
Follow down the side street movin' single file
She say
That's where I'll hold you, sleeping like a child
Way down in the hollow, leavin' so soon
Oh, St. Teresa, higher than the moon
Just what I've been needin', feel it rise in me
She say
Every stone a story, like a rosary
Corner St. Teresa, just a little crime
When I make my money, got to get my dime
Way down in the hollow, leavin' so soon
Oh, St. Teresa, higher than the moon
You called up in the sky
You called up in the clouds
Is there something you forgot to tell me
Tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me
Show me my Teresa, feel it rise in me
Every stone a story, like a rosary
