In this video Jeremy explains how we form and use the Past Simple tense. Yummy scorpions, lost tourists and a lost zombie.

The Past Simple Tense is used a lot in English. When we are talking about an action that was completed in the past, even just a second ago, we use the Past Simple Tense. I’ve heard and read some teachers explaining that the present tense is for today and that the past tense is for yesterday. It may sound good at first but that is actually a very poor description for how we use the past tense. If I talk about today, unless I am describing something that I am doing right now, I will most likely use the past simple tense. For example: I woke up at 6 o’clock, I took a shower, I had breakfast, I brushed my teeth, I got dressed. You see, all past tense sentences.
We form the Past Simple Tense by using a Subject + the past form of the verb. For example: ‘You went home for Christmas’ That’s it. There are no helper verbs needed to form affirmative sentences in the past simple tense.
However if you want to form a negative or interrogative sentence in the Past Simple tense you need to add the helper verb ‘do’ in the past tense form of ‘did’,’ and then the main verb reverts back to its base form. For example: “You did not go home for Christmas.” Or “Did you go home for Christmas?”
Watch the video for a full and clear explanation on how to form sentences in the Past Simple Tense
There are two main types of verbs in the past tense, regular and irregular.
Regular past tense verbs are formed by simply adding ed. If the verb already ends in ‘e’ then only a ‘d’ is added. If the verb ends in consonant+y the y is changed to ‘i’ and ‘ed’ is added. Also sometimes the final consonant of a word is doubled. A complete list of how to form the past simple tense regular verbs can be seen by following the link at the top of the comments section.
Irregular past simple verbs just need to be remembered. There are no simple rules about how to form past simple irregular verbs. Just practice, practice, practice using them and remember them as best you can.
Speakers of some languages have a hard time remembering to use the past tense when telling stories or talking/writing about what they did in the past. They instead stick with the base form of the verb. Just try to be aware of your speaking habits and replace the base form of the verb with the past form.
The Past Simple tense can be difficult if you don’t know how to form irregular past tense verbs (like ate and wrote) The Past Simple ending (ed) for regular verbs seems easy at first but is actually difficult for most people to use correctly in speaking because it is spelled the same for every Past Simple regular verb but is pronounced 3 different ways. Both of these difficulties are covered in the ‘Tough Stuff” section at the end of this video.
Enjoy!

I am from India. I like your video. your way of teaching is good. But I am unable to understand use of who and what .Because you have removed both sentences sub and helping verb. You have also written .We should write what in things condition. We should not use what people about .According to me ,If Q y or no so we have to write did Q sentence. if you have to get more information that time. we should use wh family sentence

14:08 but you can say stop it :P
nice
no entendi .___.
The scorpion isn’t a bug
That's true. But we often use 'bugs' in English to mean insects, spiders, scorpions, worms, etc even though it isn't technically correct. 'Insects' is usually used more correctly by English speakers to talk about animals with six legs. If someone says they are afraid of bugs though, don't give them a spider or a worm as a gift - they probably won't enjoy it.

sir how can i use help and help out in sentences ?
hi teacher jeremy
its me candyn p4 faith
whats the difference blw i had been there and i went there..n cn i say i worked in a company for 5 years or had been worked which one is correct??pls do help sir
1) I had been there (it's present perfect tense)
we use present perfect
-->when we don't know the specific time or time is not important.(indefinite or unspecified time).
Ex: i have seen that movie.
-->telling experiences.
Ex: i have been to Thailand.
-->Unfinished action continued from the past until now.
Ex: he has been since 9 am.
-->Recent experiences that affect the present.
Ex: he has broken his leg. Here present effect is he cant play today's football match.
I went there is not correct. I went there yesterday is correct.
Use yesterday, last week, last month, five mines ago, five months ago in simple past tense.
Note: Remember we always use simple past with specific time.(when)
2)I worked in a company for 5 years is correct( simple past) . here now u r no longer working in that company.
Note: Remember that past perfect is older action that simple past in terms of time .
Ex: When I got home yesterday, my roommate had already cooked dinner.
Please correct me if i am wrong. Thank you
th-cam.com/video/OVdsw3HbXdw/w-d-xo.html Here is a video for you. Enjoy!
On Sunday , I went there and enjoyed with him a lot. Here it correct ...but only ' On Sunday I went there ' is incorrect.
'On sunday, I had been there.' is correct but 'On Sunday, I had been there and enjoyed with him a lot. ' is in correct.
Is the following sentence written correctly to show the proper use of the past simple for habitual events in the past? When I lived in Jamaica, I went swimming every day.
Thanks

In the case of "i was made" or "you were born" what is happening? because you have subject plus to be verb plus verb in past tense. any grammar explanations?
thks!
+Rafael Luna that is called passive voice and it is describing something in the past tense but it is saying that you are not the one doing the action. For example, with 'I was made' you are not saying that you made something but rather that someone or something made you. With passive voice we can often add 'by' to tell who or what is really doing the actual action. 'I was made by Zeus' would be an example. This is still past tense but also in the passive voice. The way to identify the tense in passive voice is to look at the verb to be, in this case 'was'. Another example, 'My bed is made every day." You'll notice that the action 'made' doesn't change its form in passive voice but the verb to be shows is that this is the present simple.
impressive style of teaching...👍
stood not stayed
Good job man ... thank you
