this me I feel like I'm never sleepy I start to question my self is something wrong in my brain...i never had a problem feeling sleepy before this started the last week's of September 2021 since then I been like that sometime no sleep or only 4 hours or less I want to break out of this hole..i get anxious when it starts to get night time not knowing if I'm going to feel sleepy at all.
Hi Abigail, I’m glad this resonated because often when we see that what we are going through is common and we understand… things get easier. The tricky part about trouble sleeping is that it’s driven by the effort of having control. Of having certainty. In other words, trying to break out of the hole IS the hole. This can seem quite disappointing and frustrating, but when you spend a little more time here learning, it will make more and more sense.. hang in there and let us know how things are going
Hi Daniel. This perfectly explains what I'm going through. I've been awake for 48 hours now and still unable to sleep due to that hyperarousal and that just freaks me out more because the gas is there but the brake is very strong as soon as I switch off that show/hit the pillow. It then leads to a sleepless night as I'll try and enjoy wakefulness as opposed to being frustrated. I guess I wanted to ask if you've found this is common with your clients? Multiple sleepless nights in a row due to that sleepiness vanishing.
thanks for this video! helps me understand why i’m not really sleepy since april 2020. i got a blood test done, thyroid check and complete scan , nothing wrong with my body so far. my husband says it must be my psych and my head thinking too much. :/
Anytime! And as difficult as it is to admit (!), often our spouses are on the right track... But just spend some time learning about sleep here; check out the playlists in the description and I think you’ll do really well again!

I see that happen with myself when I feel depressed, I think it’s hypo arousal, and in a way that’s so true, if we could mix hypo and hyper arousal, we would be in a state that feels nice
Honestly I don’t know what to do, I have maintenance insomnia and I’ve been practicing acceptance and not worrying about staying asleep, not look to the clock, but still waking up in the middle of the night..
Hang in there, often the word “still” can truly help us, because it shows we were doing something looking for a result. Maybe acceptance and not checking the time became a way of trying not to wake up… which shows us how effort, in whatever shape, creates sleep struggles. But yes, check insomnia insight 503, rooting for you
I’m still just confused on why I can successfully calm my ming and my body down yet I still don’t fall asleep. I don’t feel like I’m experiencing hyperarousal because I don’t feel anxious my heart isn’t racing yet I don’t fall asleep. In fact the past couple of nights I’ve had barely any hours of sleep and tonight I don’t think I’ve slept at all it’s now 4:30 am and I feel extremely awake. Is this normal? This is all very new to me and my fear of not sleeping is absolutely out of control.
Hi Stephanie, you know, one really important thing to know is that hyperarousal can come from many places, not only anxiety. For example, a kid before their birthday often sleep very little and jump out of bed in the morning. Excitement can cause hyperarousal. And here is another big one... curiosity! Simply being curious or puzzled is enough to cause hyperarousal that keeps sleep from happening. So you wondering why you don't fall asleep, that keeps you from falling asleep. We call this the wonder wall. Fear of course is another cause for hyperarousal. When you study a little more here and see that short sleep/insomnia never has been shown to cause any health problems, that you cannot go crazy or lose the ability to sleep, when you see that nothing is going on except that confusion in the brain that being awake is a threat... then sleep happens all by itself. Hang in there and let us know how things go!!
@@thesleepcoachschool8192 thank you so much. It’s just extremely hard to know what to trust when doctors seem to say the opposite, they tell you that it is very dangerous to sleep only around 4 hours or sometimes less and unfortunately I can’t get that thought out of my head.
Great video. I'm going through a relapse at the moment and i had this last night. I was sleepy at 10pm but then suddenly disappeared and i was looking for it for the remainder of the night but it never came. If my thought is 'why am i not sleepy?' what would you recommend my response to be? I'm struggling to understand it. Thanks joe.
Hi Joe and thanks for the encouragement! I think it's very helpful to attribute not sleeping to something obvious. And it really always is obvious! If you check out the playlist in the description called "This is Natto" you can study the Gas & Brake model. Basically this explains sleep physiology as follows. When you don't sleep it is either insufficient gas (your body didn't need sleep at the time, maybe you had slept a lot the preceding nights) or braking going on (hyperarousal, your mind was in a high alert state). With insomnia, it's pretty much always the brake that makes sleepiness "disappear" and what keeps you awake at night. Now here's the thing, if you wonder "Why am I not sleepy?" and it's a mystery, and you try to solve this riddle, you will have more and more hyperarousal. When you go "Why am I not sleepy?" and answer with "oh, I'm hyperaroused!", then that's really what's most important because you now will not go down the rabbit hole of trying to figure out. The tricky thing is that you naturally look for something to do. But anything you do in response, with the exception of simply observing and attributing no sleepy feeling to hyperarousal, is the reason you're not sleeping. So what really helps is to just do something when you're awake at night that you like to do. Read a good book or watch some Netflix. This shows the brain that there is nothing you have to be afraid of. Also, no knowing the time at night and not monitoring how much you sleep is very helpful too. If you spend a little time learning here on the channel it will make more and more sense! Stay in touch and let us know how things go!
@@thesleepcoachschool8192 thanks that makes total sense. I was having a few microsleeps last night which didn't help the situation. I suppose it's hard to enjoy watching netflix when your exhausted but I'll give it a go and try and make the next time it happens as enjoyable as possible.
Glad it does! And you know, when nothing is enjoyable, then just take the path of least resistance... you know if something isn’t enjoyable, we can’t force it! And anything that isn’t trying to make yourself sleep is good, deploy self-kindness if you do end up doing so. Ok hope you have a nice Sunday!
