    guys I don't hate Ross!!
    I think he's hilarious and such a fun character, there's some things he does that I PERSONALLY don't like nor would I like in an IRLfriend. Stop telling me to stop watching the show because I "obviously don't understand the friendships" 🤨
    I am loving this show so much so far and I have hope for Ross and Rachel to find a great dynamic whether it is a relationship or as friends. This is literally the FIRST season guys its not that serious

      It's not serious, but, to be fair, you said multiple times that he was a terrible friend. So you can see why people would think you hate him.

      yeh esp since he is probably the most unlucky character in the show when it comes to love, he actually did the most selfless things in entire show for rachel and other friends, so thats why there is a pushback for what you say:D

      This is tricky, you’re just expressing your opinions based on what you see on the show, you don’t have any deep connections to the characters yet and that’s totally fair, but just a little advice, probably most of people who watch your reactions grew up with this show in the 90s and these characters are basically their friends, they watched every episode countless times because it’s literally the most rewatchable show that exists. People love all the original characters and your take on Ross was just off putting. It doesn’t mean you can’t criticize characters, we all know they’re far from perfect, but also this is a comedy show, their behaviour is not supposed to be taken super seriously, it’s supposed to be mainly funny. Sometimes they do stuff that are totally wrong (but funny) and you can make any comment you want, just be careful not to start hating any character because people won’t want to watch that. And this reaction felt like you think that Ross is horrible and not good for Rachel, so people got upset. Especially when Paulo is actually the a**hole.

      Don't let the negativity get to you. I love witnessing your authentic reactions to the show. There's no need to conform to any expectations about how you should feel about a character. Ignore the advice about being "careful not to dislike any character." That's ridiculous. Embrace your true self and ignore the pressure from those Friends snobs who think your opinion is "wrong". I actually find it refreshing and enlightening to hear perspectives that differ from my own. You do you and enjoy the rest of the show!

      @ I meant actually dislike for real. Which would mean not enjoying the show fully and being kind of pointless to go through all the seasons + she’ll lose many subscribers in the process and I don’t think that’s her goal. My main advice is about not taking these characters too seriously and hating them because how they act on the show as it’s supposed to be funny.

      "Friend zone" has negative connotations in 2024 that it didn't in 1994. These days the term is mostly associated with sad, pathetic man children who complain about being put in the zone by women, and who believe they are entitled to sex as a reward for being nice.
      Joey, in this episode, was just describing the reality that Rachel saw Ross as a good friend, not a potential partner, because Ross was cultivating that type of relationship instead of straightforwardly pursuing a romantic one.

Rachel at this point thinks that he is not interested anymore, since he never asked her out.

  • @SaGeForReal
    @SaGeForReal หลายเดือนก่อน +45

    Ross is NOT “pretending” to be her friend since he already knew her since high school and had a long time crush on her. But there are instances where you can like a friend, but is not sure whether you can cross that line. The problem with Ross is that he loves the idea of love and relationships, but he himself does not take the initiative to take the next step for example with Rachel. Yes he does express his feelings and told Rachel he had a crush on her in the first episode. He did ask if it was okay if maybe one day he can ask her out and she said yes MAYBE. Ross wanted a perfect moment or the right moment to ask her out. It just never happens..wrong timing or Paolo. Also..for the most part even though Rachel knows about Ross’ crush on her she’s also oblivious to his true feelings and yes sees him as a friend. Again..I do not see Ross being too overbearing with Rachel.
    Oh and Paolo?? Ughh I always had a bad vibe from him anyways..but again it’s a storyline for Rachel in the end of the day. Ross can be jealous cuz he almost got his moment to ask her out, but again bad timing or something else gets in the way.
    Also, how do you agree with Joey saying to Ross that he missed his chance to ask Rachel out? When YOU.. yourself said that you DID NOT WANT Rachel or Ross to get into any relationship cuz you want to see Rachel be independent and Ross to heal after his divorce and situation with Carol? But now he apparently missed his chance to ask Rachel out? Hmm confusing.

    • @Joker_JAK
      @Joker_JAK หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Also, Ross was with the same woman for 7 years and that was his only serious relationship. He may not even know how to go about asking Rachel out. Plus, his last relationship ended in a disastrous way that devastated him. He could also be scared.

    • @SaGeForReal
      @SaGeForReal หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Joker_JAK and the fact that his ex-wife found out that she actually is attracted and fell in love with a woman. Something like that just adds more devastation, ruins his confidence, and hurts his pride. That is why he gets overly worried/paranoid and jealous whenever another guy or coworker gets too close to Rachel. The dude has trauma or maybe he’s not good enough for the person he loves and that he will get cheated on and abandoned. While he should have been more mature and learns to trust in the people he loves, he goes back to the paranoid and anxious state and does not want to get hurt. Which can be suffocating and he allows his fears and doubts get the best of him and he makes bad decisions. People want to say he’s such a bad character in the series, but the dude has been through a lot and as we know he goes into a spiral. Which gave us funny Ross situations no less, but we have to remember that he had to take medication/go to therapy for his issues. It was used for humor and people laugh at it, but they don’t want to mention that part of the series. They just want to focus on everything else aka the bad decisions/behaviors as if other characters don’t have their flaws. But anyways, I’m digressing..in no way am I defending the bad decisions he has made in the series. I’m just saying that we have to remember what Ross went through at the beginning of the series and what transpired throughout the series. He is indeed a broken man who continued making mistakes, he was petty, mistakes, and etc. However, he did have some good/mature/sweet moments where he did support his friends and was there for his exes despite everything.

    The first episode was part of a multi-show event called "Blackout Thursday" in 1994. The blackout was caused by the main characters on the sitcom 'Mad About You' trying to get free cable and then followed through on to this show and another sitcom (that was quickly canceled). Seinfeld was supposed to be part of the event as the show is set in the same world and fell in the same nightly lineup, but Jerry Seinfeld felt he was too special and didn't want to be part of it.
    Lisa Kudrow was doing both 'Mad About You' playing Ursula and 'Friends' playing her twin Phoebe at the same time.
    Also, I love seeing who people's favorite characters are. Every one has differents, and they likely change depending on the season. Mine are Ross and Monica overall.

    • @FlopsyHamster
      @FlopsyHamster หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It was always murky whether "Seinfeld" and "Mad About You" were in the same "universe". Even though Kramer appears in an episode of "Mad About You", there is an episode of "Seinfeld" where George has to reluctantly watch "Mad About You".
      But "Mad About You" and "Friends" are definitely in the same universe. Ross also appeared on the show "The Single Guy" as a friend of the title character, and Phoebe appears on "Hope And Grace", when some of the characters go to Central Perk. I think some characters from "Caroline In The City" appeared in "Friends" and vice versa. These shows are mostly forgotten these days, while "Friends" lives on!

    I love E7. I completely disagree with you on Ross and Rachel. I don't think he's pretending to be her friend just to get close to her, but I understand why you might think that. He IS coming a little strong and being a jerk but I still think he's adorable and funny (him mimicking Paolo always cracks me up 😂). And this is when Matthew Perry really got to shine with his comedic skills, especially since half of his lines are just him talking to himself. Someone made a video of Chandler's scenes without his thoughts to show how it could have easily become a psycho thriller (added with dark & gloomy lighting, music and zoom-ins which makes it even more creepy). Here: th-cam.com/video/4OA-P_OkGO0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zj_53AGoTTwei1ys 🤣 Btw, Phoebe's full time job is a masseuse.
    Some people find the Nana storyline a bit weird because it's sad yet they're making jokes about it I like how they can make it funny without making fun of the situation, if you know what I mean. Judy, Monica and Ross's mum, is hilarious as a character but absolutely horrible to Monica. The fact that her mother was the same way yet she can't see that's exactly how she is with her own daughter is... It did seem like she kinda realised it at the end though. And I never got the gay vibe from Chandler either but for the time it isn't that offensive and even tasteful (though a little stereotypical).
    Fun facts: The blackout is the result of an event seen in the Mad About You episode "Pandora's Box" which starred Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe's twin sister Ursula. This is many of the cast members' favorite episode (particularly Matthew Perry). Also, old corded landline phones get its power through the phone lines so they are likely to work in a blackout.
    Paolo's lines translate into the following - When he introduces himself to the guys: "Hi guys, I just moved in and I live in the floor below this so I'll guess we'll see quite a lot of each other." When Rachel introduces Paolo to Phoebe: "Phoebe, you're gorgeous too! If you're all this beautiful I'll move right here!" When flirting with Rachel: "Look at the moon, look at the stars, look at everything that's beautiful." But I am not fluent in Italian and I just saw this online so please correct me if I'm wrong. Cosimo Fusco (Paolo) improvised almost every one of his lines as the directors told him to say whatever he wanted. It speaks to the actor's professionalism that he only said lines that were relevant to the situation.
    Also, apparently, what Joey mumbles to Chandler is "See if you can tell what kind of underwear she wears." 😂
    Jill Goodacre WAS one of Victoria's Secret main models in the 80s and early 90s. She is married to singer and actor Harry Connick Jr.
    Along with E2, David Schwimmer received his only Emmy nomination of the series for this episode.
    Goof: The Hanukkah menorah Joey brings in E7 only has 7 candles, but IRL it actually has 9. However, Joey is not Jewish so he wouldn't know the difference between the two.

    I think if "Friends" had been filmed during current times, Chandler may have been written as bi. He's definitely attracted to women, but there are times when it seems like he might have some attraction to men. There's a lot more of Chandler's backstory to come, which I think plays into his insecurities about being perceived as gay. As for Ross, I first watched "Friends" when it originally aired, and I was about to get involved with a guy (my eventual husband), with whom *I'd* been friend-zoned by for years, so I felt bad for Ross, knowing what it's like to pine for someone. That said, as the show goes on, Ross did become my least favorite character, because while he can be a sweet friend, there are times when he's an overbearing, self-entitled, jerk. On a side note, about women experiencing the guy who just wants to get with them, during the time I was pining for my eventual husband, his friend would pester me about dating him (the friend). This went on for years, even though I said multiple times I only wanted to be friends. He was a high school football player who was used to girls fawning over him, and I think the biggest part of his attraction to me was that I kept telling him no. He was so freakin' irritating. Honestly, the only reason I was friends with him was because he was part of our friends group, but I could only take him in small doses because of his egotism and whininess every time I told him no.

    It's completely fine if you don't like Ross... These characters are all multi-layered and change a lot through the series, however Ross and a few others problems became much of a bigger issues in todays day and age, because of how things are viewed... For example the "Friend Zone" had a completely different meaning, it used to mean that someone you really like and want to be with either doesn't want to be with you and is keeping you at a friend level, or it means that you are in rosses example too incompetent and wait too long until your relationships becomes TOO close.
    NOW "Friend zone" is looked at something horribly toxic, today it means that you just want to get into someone's pants, and you are only being nice to them because of this... Which is just a completely different meaning and I whole heartedly despise that people just randomly decided to change the meaning of this term.
    Additionally, while yes Ross is being stupid and taking his sweet time, it's not like he is actively trying to ruin her relationships... Paolo has been in the picture for 5 minutes, and Ross instantly tried to ASK him to stay out of it.... Too bad for Ross Paolo actually has no idea what he is saying. That is not sabotaging, we can clearly see after Paolo and Rachel are together here, Ross never really does anything, he only shows his anger at the situation to Joey or himself pretty much... I don't see him trying to tell Rachel that Paolo is a piece of garbage...
    I think this is something that a lot of problem misread ..
    P.S. This last line isn't about you, it's about some of the comments... I'm going to sound like a grandpa, but it's the truth... The internet + corona + Social media, has completely ruined the ability for younger people to understand any kind of conversation, without getting upset or triggered and like TRYING to understand things by putting yourself in other peoples shoes

Don't forget that they knew eachother since they were children, basically, and he had a crush on her forever yet chose to not pursue it and simply be there for her as his sister's friend and as his own. He told ask Rachel if it would be ok to ask her out sometimes, and she said yes with a smile. So absolutely non of this is decietful or pretending. I think that if we take to mind what you yourself said, that Rachel needs and wants this kind of love/relationship that she finds with Paolo, that is the exact situation with Ross, he was hearbroken by Carol who he now understand was never really in love with him, and he wants what is missing from his heart, and the most natural thing is to look for it in someone he had a huge crush on for years. Ross himself said that he "grabbed a spoon". So it's a too way street if anything, here.

Ross is just jealous and acting like 95% of men do when they're jealous.. if you think this is manipulation you have a whole lot to learn about life 😅

    I’m not the biggest Ross fan either (he’s very funny though, David Schwimmer might be the funniest actor imo), and I also don’t ship him and Rachel :p
    That being said, as annoying or weird as he can be I don’t think he’s a bad person, nor do I think he is manipulating Rachel or anything. But yeah, don’t be scared to share your honest opinion, if people disagree they can hopefully tell you why in a polite manner ^^’
    I do find it funny that I’m the first episode she said she’d be ok with him asking her out sometime, yet he still seems way too insecure to actually do it, lol.

    Hating on the most loved chemistry couple shows that you are projecting something from your own life. Dated a guy like that? You know..Relationships don't work because of two people. That was very judgmental. And what Ross was doing was human behaviour shyness,fear , jealousy. awkwardness etc. Nothing toxic about it.

    Chandler and Monica will always be the stronger, more likeable couple in this show and it isn't even close. So many videos exist dissecting why Ross was unlikeable because of all his negative personality traits he was too in denial to do anything about. I never got the Ross praise as if he was some great guy throughout the show and yes, everyone has flawed moments but his arrogance and bordeline delusion towards his behavior is what made him so aggravating. Great actor though and he had some of the most funniest moments on the show.

    A lot of people criticizing you for your 100% accurate appraisal of Ross so far. Don't listen to them, you're right. A lot of people don't want to hear it because either a) they are retconning his actions to be less toxic because of how things progress later in the series, or b) they identify so strongly with Ross that they can't see or won't acknowledge how he (and by extension they) are toxic in real life, at least at this point in the series.
