One way to learn from this video is to write down the 13 quotes on a double-sided page while leaving space around it. Wait at least 15 minutes after watching the video, then in a different colour, try to jot down what you remember about each quote.

Raisonneur - a character in a play, novel, or the like who voices the central theme, philosophy, or point of view of the work.
In simple terms, it’s the author’s voice. Eg. Inspector Goole acts as Priestley’s raissoneur

@@_joonu_Well.. Daisy is symbolic for daisies on a graveyard, foreboding her death, cleansing out her sole, symbolic in Greek for motherhood and losing an unborn child. Renton is symbolic for prostitute, renting like a slave as a working class woman, rented to all the Birling as they all have temporarily mistreated her etc. I have made a video of it on my channel. ;)

could you argue that sheila, as a member of the younger generation is only momentarily socialist and proxy to the inspectors values because she is impressionable, she adopts those views only because she is simply told to be? she asks the inspector “so am i really responsible?” and after getting the confirmation she begins adopting these socialist values and takes on the role of the inspector. i’m not sure if this is relevant though

It gives me confidence to see that the idea I came up with on my own, in my first reading of the play (that Birling is taught a lesson by the ghostly inspector, like Scrooge) is actually a grade 9 idea- I just disregarded it as bit of a random inference but now I might end up using it in my essay :)

    Hi Mr Salles,
Thanks to your help, I managed to full mark the AIC question we got in our mock! Your help is truly appreciated beyond belief.
I was wondering, could you take a look at it and give me your own idea about it?
The question is on how Priestly presents selfishness within the play.
In "An Inspector Calls", Priestley conveys a didactic message to his audience of the evils of capitalism and the selfishness that fuels it. He portrays the effect of such a corrupt system on the ordinary people and provides an alternative through socialism.
Priestley has shown selfishness to be a cause of death and despair due to the refusal of the socialist lesson. This can be seen right before the Inspector leaves in Act 3, where he delivers an important message to both the Birlings and the audience: We must all learn the socialist lesson and if we do not, we will learn it in "fire and blood and anguish". Here, Priestley uses the semantic fields of these nouns to conjure a clear image of the World Wars in the mind of his audience, which would have been very easy to depict as this was performed shortly after WWII. Priestley thus insinuates that war was a direct economic consequence of capitalism and the selfishness of powerful business owners, as war was a method of generating profit. In order to avoid another World War, Priestley shows that socialism must be implemented in society, and we must all care for one another. However, the Birlings do not learn the lesson as they celebrate, believing that Eva Smith never existed. This was disrupted by the telephone ringing again, which is symbolic of WWII - Just as the Inspector said, if people will not learn, they will learn through war. Hence, the Inspector acts as Priestley's omniscient mouthpiece to convey his didactic socialist message.
We can also see how Priestley rejects capitalism and its selfishness through the construct of Mr Birling. In Act 1, we see that Mr Birling is trying to give a lesson to Gerald and Eric, of how "a man must look after his own business and family". As soon as this is said in the play, a doorbell rings, described as a "sharp trill". The use of the adjective "sharp" is meant to convey a very jarring noise, which represents Priestley's objection to such a statement. As Mr Birling is a microcosm of capitalism, we can see that Priestley is using the Inspector as a proxy to cut off and reject whatever message Mr Birling is conveying. This can also be seen through Mr Birling's previous statements, talking of how "the Kaizer doesn't want war" and referring to the Titanic as "unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable". The use of the adverb "absolutely" indicates how much Mr Birling believes in the power of the Titanic, which could here represent capitalism itself. However, as the audience would already know, two World Wars have occurred and the Titanic had sunk, which Priestley uses to show how Mr Birling and his capitalist ideals are rather idiotic. This shows how the playwright wishes to show how, whoever believes in this man is also stupid, and whatever he says is simply false, and thus how the selfishness of those who "look after their own" must be rejected.
Priestley also uses his audience's belief in Christianity to convince them of his socialist message. This, again, is voiced by his proxy, the Inspector, when he talks of how "we are all members of one body". This is a direct reference to the communion, which many people in his audience would recognise as roughly 80% of them would be regular church-goers. Since he says this while delivering his socialist message, Priestley implies that socialism is a part of Christianity, and so even the most capitalist of people would accept his message as the message of the Bible, and would thus have to disagree with the capitalist message of the time as it was not in line with the Christian ideals.
Any and all comments are appreciated, thanks! Also, please keep doing what you are doing Mr Salles, you are amazing and well-loved by this community :)

I feel like maybe the second Inspector is a metaphor for the second world war, that the Birlings, symbolic of capitalist society, will be trialed by Inspector and as they haven't learnt there lesson they will be met with an even greater trial and force of the second Inspector, in the form of WW2.
