- External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Tuesday emphasised India’s stance as a principled yet robust nation highlighting the country’s evolving approach towards challenges such as terrorism and border disputes.
“The image of India is of friendly but fair… If you look at a challenge like terrorism, the world recognises that today’s India deals with terrorism very differently from how it used to,” remarked Jaishankar at the Viksit Bharat 2047 programme held at Hansraj College in the national capital.

Did we show assertiveness when the tiny Maldives threw us out last month? Or when we were not invited by America when they were pulling out of Afghanistan, and our security concerns were compromised? Recently, when America formed SQUAD to contain China, India was replaced by the Philippines, and SQUAD was put in cold storage. After criticising Nehruvian non-alignment, the BJP was forced to follow it in the Russia-Ukrainian war.
When China came knocking at our doors, no country criticised China.
Could you give one example in the last decade where India has shown assertiveness?
@@pardeeptandon oh in so many ways, I’d say it’s not as bold or assertive as I like but I think they still thread carefully. For example- most recently with khalistani issues in Canada, india has been bold in standing up to Canadian govt in asserting that it’s Canadian failed policy that has fueled the recent violence in Canada re nijjar.

Judging future by gdp positioning and whipping up vision on that basis without factoring other even more serious considerations is what makes this speech uninspiring. Technology change is a universal phenomenon of our times and have the humility to accept that fact too. Then the speech will be inspiring . Not impressed by comparing digital transactions with a country of relatively smaller population. Corruption is defeated is a claim which doesn’t hold water since hoards of corruption are practiced as a right and bend so low to cover.
