Stoopid usb. Going to try formatting with a tv or something stupid. Thats how I got a single 1TB FAT 32 partition on my pocket HDD's. Now if only I could remember how to find the format usb option on my tv... I think it may involve plugging the ant in and trying to record something.
Probably the simple way, but I like fixing stuff ok. Also this video is a bit bogus as its the regedit of the computer, so it changes the write protect of any usb's plugged into that machine in future as well. I didn't have storage device policy's because that type of write protect has never been used on my machine forbore. I ended up adding a new key and Dword, didn't help one bit. But I do know how to disable a system from being able to write to usb now >:) Can't wait for the family reunion this year :)
If you can’t find the key StorageDevicePolicies in you have to create it manually. 1. Right-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrrentControlSet\Control\ and select New -> Key. 2. Enter the name StorageDevicePolicies. 3. Click on the new registry key StorageDevicePolicies and on the right pan right-click, select New > DWORD and give it the name WriteProtect. 4. Double click on it and set its value to 0.
Yep already did that. It stopped all flash drives from writing. Long story short. if you dont have storage device policies, it cant be affecting the flash stick. Creating new policies just adds more complexity to the problem. Still looking for a solution. I hear a PS3 or set top box may be dumb enough to format it without noticing its write protected. The advice in this video is not very good, and wont help 90% of people with this problem. If you do have storage device policies issues, it will prevent ALL flash drives from writing on that machine only. So realy all its good for is practical jokes.
I swear. I lost a few drives and thrown them away because of this. I thought I render them useless. This issue has given me fits. Glad I found this. Thanks!
Click start then run regedit go to this directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Currentcontrolset\control\ if you can't find StorageDevicePolicies under control folder then make some new one. Follow this steps: step 1: go to this directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Currentcontrolset\control\ again and right click control folder step 2: select new, then click key and rename the new key #1 folder into StorageDevicePolicies step 3: right click StorageDevicePolicies folder and select new DWORD(32-bit) Value for 32-bit Operating System and select new DWORD(64-bit) Value for 64-bit Operating System step 4: rename dword newer folder into WriteProtect, then double click WriteProtect and change the value data into 0 with hexadecimal base, Then close regedit step 5: open my computer and refresh it 5 times without do anything to your usb, and properly eject your flash drive step 6: plug in your usb again into your computer and format it using exfat instead of fat32
for everyone who doesn't have the reg-edit directory, Follow these instructions as noted by Sanzay Thapa, you need to make that String value, i was able to change it to zero then format it, it worked once that directory is made. 50% thank you goes to Sanzay Thapa and the rest goes to Britec09 for the video on how to do it when you have that folder. "u have to make StorageDevicePolicies key if u don't have any goto control>New key>StorageDevicePolicies>new Dword"
hi when try to format it says write protected but when I go to registry option it is all ready showing 0. also tried CMD way diskpart list disk select disk attributes disk attributes disk clear readonly but doesn't work . If any other way please me ... thankx
Thanks for the fix , on W 10 you will need to go into storage management you may not see Storage Device Properties , then connected subsystems , then CacheEnabled REG_DWORD change the 1 to a 0 .
Thank you so much for this I kept having issue with my external hard drives from western digital not backing up anymore and diskpart clear attributes would not work. thank you for the video I have since subscribed to your videos

Thanks for the effort... But, everybody on TH-cam offering a solution to this "write protect" thing all give the SAME solution. And I think for the majority of us, it does NOT work. I'm still looking. I've got two partitions on my thumb drive. One is write protected and the other is not. Why is this fix so cryptic?
You are a marvel to us Brian, your tech tips are truly on the button but I have to laugh, my wife too is a cockney. One of her "bruvvas" speaks just like you. His fumdrive (also drive hache) is always having write protection problems. Hahaha. All the best mate.
this option does not work. i cant find storage device policies in my reg edit. if have any other ideas for format a write protected usb then pls upload.
Thanks Brian :-) Dam windows registry, pain in the bum lol. Bring back the physical switch on the usb stick itself, much better than windows blocking. :-)

if you don't have the "STORAGE DEVICE POLICIES" on your regedit, you will need to create them. This worked for me.
Click start
then run regedit
go to this directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Currentcontrolset\control\
if you can't find StorageDevicePolicies under control folder
then make some new one. Follow this steps:
step 1:
go to this directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Currentcontrolset\control\
again and right click control folder
step 2:
select new, then click key and rename the new key #1 folder into
StorageDevicePolicies
step 3:
right click StorageDevicePolicies folder and select new DWORD(32-bit) Value
for 32-bit Operating System and select new DWORD(64-bit) Value
for 64-bit Operating System
step 4:
rename dword newer folder into WriteProtect, then double click WriteProtect
and change the value data into 0 with hexadecimal base, Then close regedit
step 5:
open my computer and refresh it 5 times without do anything to your usb, and
properly eject your flash drive
step 6:
plug in your usb again into your computer and format it using exfat instead of fat32
Thank you so much :)
At me it still doesn't work .. I don't know what to do
value data into 0 with hexadecimal base? How do you do that part?
