  • This video is for anyone curious about how to pray the Daily Office found within various Anglican Traditions. In particular, this video walks us through how to pray Morning Prayer Rite II from the Book of Common Prayer 1979 (BCP), used most commonly in the Episcopal Church in the United States (episcopalchurch.org/).
    The video begins with a brief history of the Daily Office and continues with a detailed description of how to prayer Morning Prayer Rite II. Morning Prayer is used as an example of how to pray one of the 4 prayers in the Daily Office.
    You will need a Book of Common Prayer 1979 either in hard copy or found online (bcponline.org) to follow along with this video.
    Morning Prayer begins on pp. 75 in the BCP 1979. Morning Prayer continues as follows:
    pp. 75-78: Opening sentence of scripture
    pp. 79: Confession of Sin
    pp. 80: Absolution
    pp. 80: Invitatory and Pslater
    pp. 80-82: Antiphons
    pp. 82-83: Venite/Jubilate/Christ Our Passover
    pp. 84: Psalm & Lesson (Psalter on pp. 581-808; Lectionary on pp. 933-1001; prayer.forwardmovement.org)
    pp. 85-96: Canticles
    pp. 96: Apostle's Creed
    pp. 97: Lord's Prayer
    pp. 97-98: Suffrages A & B
    pp. 98-100, 157-251: Collects of the Day
    pp. 100-101: Collects for Mission
    pp. 101: The General Thanksgiving
    pp. 102: Prayer of St. Chrysostom
    pp. 102: Dismissal

    Thank you Anna, I’m new to Anglican Church. I haven’t been confirmed yet or even be able to go through the Anglican 101 classes yet since the next round for our church is in the fall. I was really called by the Lord and dove in head first and bought a BCP and started looking to pray the office. I’ve now been through 2 Anglican 101 class for other churches that were posted on TH-cam and find the more I listen the more I pick up. I say this not to brag but show my hunger for truth and to let others know you don’t have to wait to learn about Anglicanism. I have several saved videos and even an Anglican 101 playlist where I put videos like yours. Let me just say that the way you break it down, chronologically, simply, and frame your responses as from someone who just picked up a BCP is amazing. One thing I would change, and this only because I was made aware of my of sin in this recently, provide a warning. Liturgy can become precious, and the BCP is a great tool but it is that, a tool, used to help prepare our minds and guide us in prayer. It can help and hurt if you’re not careful. It can help on the days you don’t feel like praying but do because you have the words provided, but if you find yourself simply rushing through it or holding yourself on a pedestal because you pray the office 2 or 3 times a day you’re missing the point like I did. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

    I have a friend who recently started working for Forward Movement. She and I just had a Zoom chat about barriers to entry into the church for those who did not grow up in the Anglican tradition (like me). We talked about how helpful it would be to have more resources out there to help break down some of the barriers to entry into Anglicanism as a way of life. I shared this video with her, because this is the EXACT kind of thing that I think people would be looking for. I recently started praying the Daily Office on Zoom with some a couple of different parishes that had their zoom links posted, and I have found it super helpful as a way of providing a balance between structure of praying and hearing the Bible as well as having the flexibility to personalize it for my spiritual practice, and having videos like this help to invite other people to join me in that journey. Thank you!

      I pray your exploration of Christianity is enriching, Gopesh! It really can be overwhelming with the various denominations. Anglicanism really is the via media, or "the middle way," that tries to bridge Protestantism and Catholicism.
      May I recommend before delving into denominational differences looking to what Christians across denominations have agreed upon to be true throughout history? For example, take a look at the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed if you haven't already. These statements of faith are a summary of Christianity - and excellent jumping off points!

    • @annapage6403
      @annapage6403  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, @Simeonshope! Please excuse my delayed response to your question - I tend to forget to check TH-cam comments. In the Episcopal Church, we are in Year One. From the BCP 1979, we determine this by looking at the date of the First Sunday of Advent. If the First Sunday of Advent precedes an odd-number year, then Year One begins. If the First Sunday of Advent precedes an even number year, then we begin Year Two. So, for 2020-2021, the First Sunday of Advent was 29 Nov 2020 (even year leading into an odd year), so we began Year One on Advent 2020.
      The BCP 1979 explains it like this on pp. 934 -"The Daily Office Lectionary is arranged in a two-year cycle. Year One
      begins on the First Sunday of Advent preceding odd-numbered years, and Year Two begins on the First Sunday of Advent preceding even-numbered years. (Thus, on the First Sunday of Advent, 1976, the Lectionary for Year One is begun.)"
      Convoluted, but I hope this helps!

    As a Catholic I do not use this. I use the Divine Office Vol 1-3 (Because there are 3 Volumes in the UK rather than the 4 Volumes in the US) I think you explained this well and found it interesting to see minor differences in the format. I think that Christian unity is important and we shouldn’t be opposing each other. I personally do believe that the Universal Church is the original because along with Orthodox Churches it has Apostolic Succession. Having said this I do strongly believe it’s important to maintain Christian unity across all denominations and off shoots. Christ didn’t suffer death for us all his followers to be set against each other. He was raised from death to conquer death and draw all to himself. Peace be with you, God Bless

    Many thanks for taking time to make this video, it was very instructive. I try to begin the day with a brief devotion, but I find performing the full Daily Office alone to be a bit awkward. I go through the lectionary psalm, OT, epistle, and gospel readings every day, but it seems that the Daily Office was really intended to be performed with an Officiant present. Any tips for making this flow easier solo? Blessings!

    • @annapage6403
      @annapage6403  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching, Andrew! You're not alone in finding praying the Daily Office solo to be awkward - especially since it was, originally, intended to be prayed in community (of at least 2, so there could be a "call and response" like you mention!). A few thoughts:
      (1) Have you tried reading the officiant parts aloud and reading the people parts in your head? Or vice versa? This way you might be able to create the illusion that you're not praying alone.
      (2) Try reading the whole Daily Office (whether MP, Noonday, EP, Compline) aloud. Praying out loud helps me stay focused, even if I'm physically alone.
      (3) Find someone who would be willing to pray the office with you - even if over Zoom! My congregation and I found a lot of comfort in jumping on Zoom together to pray. It was a constant reminder that though we are not physically together, we're still connected - almost like a visual representation of the communion of saints.
      I hope some of these ideas help! If you've found something else that works for you, please let us know. This is a common struggle for people!

    IMPORTANT DETAIL: If your standard Bible does not have the Apocrypha, in order to replace any of those the daily appointed readings, simply substitute one of the 31 Proverbs in the Bible. Too bad the Episcopal liturgical committee didn't provide alternative Old Testament selections like other Anglican provinces or else like the Lutherans and Presbyterians have, who do use the 1979 daily office lectionary. Pure short-sidedness, not considering most people don't own a Bible edition with Apocrypha.

      The real church is the Body of Christ. Which of the many 4 walls we choose to worship in is a tough choice. All Churches have flaws, but the more I learn, the more the Catholic Church seems to be closer to the real thing. The Episcopal Church Book of Common Prayer (BCP) we are told, has everything we need to know, but it has many flaws and only contains 70% or what's in the Bible at best. The very end of Revelations discusses the penalty for adding to and taking away from Scripture. Why not just use the Bible? The BCP and Bible say the Old Testament Morality laws still apply and a Holy Marriage is that of a Man and Woman before God. Yet, the Episcopal Church allows unrepentant "christians" in unholy same sex marrages to become deacons, bishops, etc. This goes against the Qualifications of Elders addressed in Titus but appears to be completely ignored by church leadership. Also, the Episcopal Church likes to use "newer" versions of the Bible that soften the tone on certain sins almost as if they aren't sins at all. Final question; Why is it so hard to actually find a Bible in an Episcopal Church?

    • @johns1834
      @johns1834 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Pedro Ivan Sanchez The Episcopal Church BCP conveniently leaves out very important Bible verses referring to homosexuality, for example; 1-Corinthians 6:9, Romans 1:18 and on, and Leviticus 18 entirely. Many in the Episcopal Church, including ministers do not believe the Bible is true, so naturally homosexuality is essentially "NOT" a sin and homosexuals can become bishops, priest, and deacons. They are not doing these people any favors, in fact ignoring such things does more harm to everyone involved. We went home to Rome in the Catholic Church. The choice is obviously yours, but I suggest you stay as far away from the Episcopal Church as you can.

    Looking at your Instagram, it seems clear that you are either pro-lgbt or you are indeed yourself part of the lgbt community. You are also a woman. Although the Episcopal church has decided to allow women to serve as priest, there is no Biblical foundation for this. Moreover, even a male priest who supported lgbt ideology and lifestyle would disqualify himself from ministry. These represent enormous problems with the choices of the Episcopal church. It's quite concerning. I'm sure you are a very nice person, but the Lord, as he reveals Himself in his Holy Scriptures, makes clear his positions. Jesus says, "Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him". If we ignore glaring contradictions between how we believe and live our lives and His Word and we make no attempt to correct our ways in accordance with His Word, then we are walking in error and we are unrepentant.
