The system we taught in the Navy was even simpler. There are really only 2 punches with each hand, i.e., straight arm and bent arm. We did use a 6-number system...I) Jab 2)Cross 3) Lead Hand Hook 4) Rear Hand Hook 5) Lead Hand Uppercut 6) Rear Hand Uppercut. All of these punches can be thrown to either the head or body, although the jab and cross are most often head shots. This video gets to 8 by numerically differentiating between a hook to the body and a hook to the head. It's really the same thing.
At my gym lead hand is always odd number, rear is even, so jab is 1, cross is 2, lead hook is 3, rear hook is 4, lead uppercut is 5 and rear upper is 6
