S-mine 35: The Bouncing Betty

  • **If video is too slow for you switch to 1.5x**. Here is a completely inert S-mine model of 1935 in nearly all her glory. Lots of half truths exist around this mine, I hope this video helps explain it in good enough detail. This mine has had many other ones copy it. For good reason, it basically becomes a 360 degree claymore and rather than just injure one soldier, it kills or injures anyone withing a certain radius. Also demoralising as it explodes at waist height.

By the time these come to market they have thoroughly been combed over, that is of course unless you happen to live in the wild in Russia and have a metal detector, thats where all these come from.
After all the years in the ground being hard packed the explosive charge in the middle resembles one of those cans of instant juice you keep frozen in your refrigerator, a few years ago there was a video on youtube of some guys in Russia disarming these things and they put that solid hunk of TNT out of one of these in the 'Y' of this big tree and detonated it, it was impressive to say the least.

TH-cam caters to short attention spans and unfortunately alot of people reduce the technical details on how things work just to keep it shorter. Enough videos out there doing that. Mine provide more detail on things people dont usually find info on. Sure it doesnt make everyone want to sub but it does get the info to people who want to take the time to learn about the stuff.

I use to play paintball & a friend of mind made some bouncing betty homemade mines using 3 co2 cartage’s & they worked great they jumped up like 3 feet & would spray balls very hard everywhere . I got toasted by one had pink paint all over me , he bought regular mines you just set in the ground too steped on one of thos too it blew paint up the back of my shirt once I stepped off of it we had RPGs paintball guns that would spray a paintball grenade out of it a few guys on are team had Rainmakers it was like a Gatling gun just nasty . We use to play on my friends land it was huge it had a old apartment complex on it & a lot of woods . We play over a course of the weekend a full 72 hours around the clock if you got killed once you were out for the rest of the weekend & had to ref the rest of the game we all took turns there was like 300 people that would play a from around the country . Some times it would get scary just like a real war .

These mines were bad for moral during WW2, designed to mutilate rather than kill, allied soldiers hated them because they detonated at about the same height off the ground as the average standing man's nutsack. It is likely that they deprived a lot of men of fatherhood after the war.
In the book Monte Casino, ten armies in hell the author writes 'The dreaded S-mine was even more frightening, about the size of a tin can and called the Bouncing Betty by the Americans (more accurately called the 'de-bollocker' by the British'.) and then goes on to describe them in use.

Yeah these are definitely not the AP mines designed to injure the person activating it. It is basically a victim activated 360 degree claymore with bigger ballbearings. Anyone near it is not going to be a happy person. 360 degrees of buckshot basically.

Most anti personnel mines that is the case. One injured and in pain and the rest around them being demoralized. The s mine was basically a kill anything in the area mine. One sets it off and it kills him and his buddies. Waist height with what amounts to steel high speed buckshot. It would wound some and kill others.

Not sure on this model, but they can be rigged by trip wire. Just a slight tip of the mast, or on some a pin pulled out. Thus they may be set on a path or strung together to set off a wall of pellets.

The fuze is a uprom1 yugo fuze from the prom mines. Pressure activated and trip wire activated. Not a pressure release. They pulled on the safety collar to remove it. Hollywood bs. There are no mines that you have to step on then take your foot off to allow it to explode. Behind enemy lines was also a movie using this as a plot line, where someone steps on one and keeps his foot on it.

Not sure but from what I read the fuze uses a belleville spring much like the m14 mine. There is a black powder charge but it is to clear the dirt and top off the mine for the main charge to do its job because of the way it is made it needs to be clear to ensure full penetration.
