This is the COLOR MISTAKE to Worry About - Oil Painting Tutorial

  • Color is a constantly renewed enigma and this is what makes it so beautiful. Each artist has a unique way of seeing color and delivers, through painting, a truly unique expression.
In a way, one never really masters color, and maybe that's for the better. Sometimes the best ideas are found in the "happy little accidents", those little mistakes that are not really mistakes. Color is fluid, like a stream that goals around the rocks, and most of the time, the little mistakes find their solution naturally, by trial and error. However, not all mistakes are like that, some lead to others and unfortunately make things worse. While some mistakes are harmless, some should be avoided at all costs, and that's what we'll talk about today.

I am an artist living and working in France. I learned the techniques of the Atelier of the Nineteenth century and now I try to share some of my knowledge with the rest of the world, because I think that beauty still has an important role to play in artistic creation. I only get muddy colors when mixing cold and warm colors.

I struggled for years with acrylic, painting only once a year because as I finally realized, this is not the best way for me.
Then I switched to oil despite an irrational fear of oil being messy and difficult.
It turns out oil is easier and a real pleasure to use and thanks to your videos I'm BACK IN THE GAME, BITCH.

I love setting up nice mistakes. If it’s a fail, I just scrape it off and it goes into the grey mix.

I've all but stopped using cadmium reds in favor of perylene red, mainly because it works so well for glazing. Indian yellow has also been a good substitute for the warmer cadmium yellows and works well for glazing. Sometimes Naples yellow works better in a mix in place of titanium white. Zinc whites work well for color mixes that need to maintain transparency.
Muddy colors are most often the result of a visual fight between warm and cool colors where nobody wins. Try to get your mix using two colors if possible and then considering if a warm or cool color will get you closer to your desired result.

If it wasn’t for your encouragement , would have never started to learn to paint at 54, and in two and a half year being able to confidently sell portraits in oil. Sent you a few of my latest as an attestation on instagram. Again my sincerest thanks!

Hey great Florent! Thanks a lot for all the info you give away, is really helpful and highly educational. Your videos are beautifully designed, the photography, color and the edition is perfect (and is yours, because i can se a thumbnail or a video and knowing for sure is from your channel). Love the close takes of the oil paint, and the mixing 👌. Keep up the good work and wish you the best to you and you family. A big hug from Argentina! Ariel.

My tip as a beginner is to make a palette with all the colors you have all values/croma's/hue's this and write how much you used with what color and which mixture.
This helped me gain knowledge of my palette so quick that I didn't have to mix'n match or trial and error by just knowing which color goes to what tone when mixed with a certain other color.

Great video as usual Florent! Your background music is just right in each video and your calm voice have put me in ‘the flow state’ on multiple listening binges. So much that I’ll use a mix of them on a loop in my paint sessions. Thanks. I’ve yet to take the giant leap into oils. However, your color theory has provided me such great strides in progressing my growth with acrylics. Outside of my day job I don’t lack for projects. But I just have to choose a weekend that I will devote to starting my ‘oils’ journey. I wish you the best from across the pond my friend!

Thank you for mentioning that adding white moves color toward gray. Sources/people tend to say it 'brightens' the color. I thought I was going nuts with the amount of information pointing to that incorrect interpretation. It is comforting to know we tend to think about color/hue/chroma the same...even if it is different than more popular and simplified sources.

    • @ulutiu
      @ulutiu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

They are partially right. In case of organic pigments such as pthalos and quinacridones adding small amount of white increases saturation (or as you put it brightens the color), but adding more decreases it. Since paints aren't colors but chemical substances, interactions not necessarily match what color theory teaches.

Great video as always. I just finished your course on colour theory and I highly recommend it to all regardless of skill level. As someone who never had any professional help your course has thought me a great deal and transformed the way I look at colours and mix them. I can't thank you enough for putting it together for us and sharing all your knowledge..
    Thanks again Florent!

In your list of essential useful pigments you don't have phthalo blue, light red, a clean orange, a violet , a gray , titan buff and chromatic black . Many will totally disagree but it is essential to have those in order to not waste to much time with mixing because it is better to have a good flow especially in abstract .
