  • The Borderlands painting series continues and we dive deep into the Borderlands style with this fantastic pair of Psychos. Start to finish, this pair took about an hour to take from primer to the tabletop.
    Thanks to my friends at Monster Fight Club for the minis - check out the full range of awesome Borderlands miniatures (and a game to go with them!) on their Kickstarter:
    www.kickstarter.com/projects/...
    If you have any questions, leave them in the comments!

    For primer, I used Citadel Chaos Black Primer (my favorite) with a coat of Pro-Acryl Ivory on top of that, but you can use any light primer. After that, you've got:
    1) Citadel Nuln Oil Gloss (all over)
    2) Pro-Acryl Bold Titanium White Highlights (all over)
    3) Citadel Contrast Gryph-Hound Orange (pants and mask stripes)
    4) Citadel Contrast Dark Oath Flesh (skin)
    5) Citadel Contrast Black Templar (straps & boots)
    6) Pro-Acryl White Gold (weapons and metal stuff)
    7) Citadel Contrast Warp Lightning (her hair)
    8) Pro-Acryl Burnt Orange (rust)
    9) Pro-Acryl Orange (clothes' highlights)
    10) Pro-Acryl Golden Brown + Pale Flesh (skin highlights)
    11) Citadel Contrast Aethermatic Blue (eyes)
    Bases are
    1) Citadel Agrellan Earth Texture paint
    2) Drybrushed with Pro-Acryl Ivory
    3) Edged with Citadel Steel Legion Drab

    Here's hoping for a Zane's clone tutorial some time in the future. I'm so excited for this project I might have to break out the BL3 models and practice on them. Keep up the good work and thanks for the in-depth tutorials. I have a feeling a lot of video game fans are going to become table top fans because of this game.

      Thanks! It was for a unit of Bretonnian Grail Pilgrims, at the 2005 Baltimore Games Day. Another unit from my Bretonnians took Silver in Atlanta later. I'm not sure if it got published in that book, but there's definitely photos floating around online.
      It was fun painting for the Golden Demons, but ultimately I think it's more fun painting more game-ready minis, rather than taking months on one model/unit.

      @@JollyLark Truly appreciate the replies. If you'll indulge another question...for priming, I see most people using spray primers for the base coat which makes sense, but what do you feel about brush-on primers? I bought a set of Army Painter droppers that has a light-gray brush on primer, but wasn't sure if I should instead get a lighter, like bone-tone, spray primer for the second coat after I prime black. Sorry, that turned into more words than I had intended on typing.

    • @JollyLark
      @JollyLark  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheCastelloCodger The brush on primers can work ok, especially with plastic miniatures. If you were doing metal or resin miniatures, I would always try to use a spray primer. The enamel paint in a spray primer has better adhesion.
      I have not tried the army painter brush on primers, but have had good luck with Vallejo and Badger brush on primers. Living in the south, there's a few months of the year when it is too humid to use spray primers, so during the summer I'll use brush on primers.

    I have bought this game and I have never painted miniatures. Is there a good base kit to get somewhere that will get me most of what I need to paint miniatures? Love the videos and how good your's turn out.

    • @JollyLark
      @JollyLark  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! There's lot of good starter sets out for the miniature painting. I'm a big fan of Pro-Arcyl paints, especially for starting painters because they're ready to use straight out of the bottle. Some other brands really need a bit of water added first and it can be tricky to get the hang of the right paint texture (too little water and it's lumpy, too much and it runs all over).
      Vallejo paints are also good and their game color set would be a great starting point: amzn.to/33PkHcN (affiliate link)

    Great tutorial, really like this borderlands mini series, are you going to paint Maya? I don't want to be the boring dude who always complaining, but it seems that it's not enough light for the camera, the video is little bit dark, maybe put an additional daylight lamp. And the paints names on screen could be very helpful for the beginners.

    • @JollyLark
      @JollyLark  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Keep 'em coming - it's a great way to improve. Lighting is a tough balance between the focus depth of the camera and brightness. I've got the painting desk lit to within a few lumens of the sun, but I'm also shooting at f11-f13 to get enough depth of field to (hopefully) keep the mini in focus most of the time.
      I've Lilith in the queue and am looking forward to painting more of the characters over time.

    Which ArmyPainter Paints would be the equivalents to the Citadel ones? Like the Contrast Dark Oatht Flesh ?

    • @JollyLark
      @JollyLark  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't used that many Army Painter paints, but something like their "Warrior Skin" looks like it might be a good choice. Possibly "Ruddy Fur". But those are just best guesses, looking at their color chart.

    What is the tool you used in the end for the highlights?

    • @JollyLark
      @JollyLark  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the end, for the black lines, it's a 05 micron pen. Before that, it was a ghost brand dry brush on the base. For the highlights on the models, just a small pointy brush.a

    Thank you for sharing; Before applying the Nuln Oil, may it be worthwhile to apply a Gloss Varnish and then the Nuln Oil to help the wash go into the recesses? If yes, do we need to apply a Matt Varnish before applying the Contrast Paint? (i.e., will Contrast Paint adhere to Gloss Varnish?) Your thoughts are welcomed.

    • @JollyLark
      @JollyLark  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It depends on what effect you're going for. The glossier the surface, the more a thin wash of paint is going to settle into the recesses. Contrast paint does fine over a glossy finish, but you'll get less of the color on the raised areas.
      In this video, I'm using the (now discontinued) gloss version of Nuln Oil, which flows into the cracks more than it's non-gloss version. Army painter's dark tone is probably the most similar to the old Nuln Oil gloss. I haven't tried this effect using that, but it ought to work.
      The goal of that first step is just to black-line the cracks across the whole model, which helps sell the cell-shaded effect. Any other questions, just let me know!

      @@JollyLark Thank you for your time and insight. I am still a "newbie" at this. My primary focus is Marvel Crisis Protocol and comic based miniatures; I am considering a White Primer first; Following that with Underpainting contrast with Black Lining/Pin Wash or an Acrylic Wash. The Black Lining/Pin Wash may be more clean/accurate, but the Acrylic Wash may be faster. To mitigate the "staining" from an Acrylic Wash I was thinking of a Gloss Varnish first. My next concern was that Contrast/Speed paint may not adhere well to the Gloss Varnish, so I may need to apply a Matt Varnish first.

    • @JollyLark
      @JollyLark  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It might be worth getting a few test miniatures to test it out on. Crisis protocol minis are great, but spendy enough it might be worth practicing on something else first.
      Different surfaces have different amounts of "traction" And it can be difficult to tell what result you're going to get without trying it. A gloss finish is like slippery ice: great for ice skating, not so good for walking. I I find it easier to dab a wash off the raised areas with a paper towel instead of doing multiple layers of gloss/matte varnish.

    So when you record, how do you keep your thoughts in order for the voice over? Is it like you kinda talk out loud for the camera when you think of something, then pull it out and fill in the gaps after while editing?

    • @JollyLark
      @JollyLark  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good question: I think about what I'm going to say when I'm painting, but don't record audio at all. Then I fully edit the video. Once the video is edited, then I record the audio while watching the video. At that point, I've got a good sense of what I want to say.
      I tried recording audio at the same time, but painting while talking made both messier 😁

      I like the ZIG Millennium .005 black for fine details, like 30mm miniatures (added an Amazon link in the description). The larger sizes can sometimes be useful. I got my at a local art store, but they're not hard to find online. The Pigma "Micron" pens are fine, but their points seems a little harder/scratchier and I've damaged the paint once or twice with those.
