    I believe one of the reasons the Black community (Africans included) has shied away from it is cause there's generational trauma attached. Historically, we have had to suppress our emotions and act like we're okay while being dehumanized by the society around us. We have gotten used to, "don't name it cause then it becomes real. Just say you're having a bad day and move on" because in times of slavery, we weren't ALLOWED to have "sick" / mental health days. It just wasn't a "luxury" we were given (on top of that, psychology was in its early stages, so certain things were not even well known). Also, therapy is quite expensive. Not everyone who needs it can afford it. I'm in school studying psyc to become a counselor and one of the things I want to work on is affordable therapy rates.

My arab parents don't believe in mental illness at all so it's very hard to talk to them. I am white. Even in my family we use to clean the dirty clothes at home. In the past I have been depressed to the point of simply wanting to disappear. I was inside a tunnel where there was no light, and there was no air to breathe. I was disgusted by myself, (even today I have not completely overcome the wounds left me from that period), I was a victim of bullying, I had come to the point of no longer answering the phone at home or mobile, for fear that it was someone of my schoolmates throwing me insults ... I felt completely alone. I was alone. sorry again for my bad english. (I feel I must give a huge hug to your father who seems to be a very wise man, who has seen and passed through all the colors in life!)

Of course it's glamor and fun travelling with friends I made, but no one speaks about how you can go days on end not leaving your room, sometimes not speaking to someone 2-3 days at a time. Well made.

I can sooo relate to y'alls pops story about HOW HE FELT/ ACTED when he was younger...looking for acceptance. I was so busy looking out for EVERYONE else that I LITERALLY LOST ME!! Thanks for having the conversation...y'alls pops is INCREDIBLY AMAZING!!! My therapist once asked me the definition of EGO...I started reeling off all these answers. Tarik Ali, I really appreciate you and your father’s candor together, I watched you officially coming out to your dad and that was absolutely amazing and touched me to my core. I could only wish this for my family( and for other families especially BLACK ones) We are more often than none ashamed, afraid, willfully ignorant and more worried about what other people will say or think to help save a loved one. We often let our pride get in the way and that causes us to not use our common sense and or have compassion and empathy for others that maybe struggling or displaying non verbals as they are silently pleading and crying out for help. We often struggle with having poor communication skills, we allow our religious beliefs to sway our hearts and minds as well as our thoughts and actions and therefore this taints our hearts in such away that we loose sight of what’s really important and needed which is SUPPORT, LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING .
    Hell we often refuse to address or get help for MH and or drug and alcohol addiction. So thank you and I congratulate you both for tackling this extremely sensitive issue with such grace and tack. I can only hope my family will someday achieve this same level of openness, respect and acceptance towards one another. You and your dad discussing your personal battles with Mental Health and drug addiction was absolutely amazing. I’ve never watched you before with such interest but this topic as well as your coming out hit home. Just listening to your father and son duo show was truly a blessing not to mention it’s what’ is needed in our communities, churches and households, so thank you. Btw I really would love it for your father to start a channel for people my age as I’m in my early 50’s .

    Thank you so much tarek for this videos cause so many time ive seen young black men where live who suffer with mental health problems but they're parent are afraid to admit to or acknowledge that there child is suffering in that way. They feel like the blame or shame is being put on them when a doctor tell them your child is depressed or bi-polar. I wish in today time more people open there eyes and see there child need help instead of being scared and waiting before it to late. i have my battle with depression but i have a mother who well aware and acknowledges my suffering in that regard. Thank you again for this video. You are such a inspiration

  • @hj3130
    @hj3130 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I truly appreciate this conversation and how candid it was. It's very rare to find an adult, especially a black adult, willing to talk about mental health and their own journey. One thing I can say that your dad touched on was not always diagnosing our quiet moments to depression. One thing I've learned is that our body, mind and spirit naturally wants to recharge, like a battery. Our bodies are machines and we give out sometimes and in that moment we feel chill neither happy nor mad just neutral, and it doesn't last long. Once again thank you for the opportunity to hear your truth and experiences. I live abroad and I can relate to how your experience was in Paris but I am happy you came out on the other side. Traveling and or living abroad teaches you to appreciate where you came from and appreciate what's in front of you. Thanks again Tarek.

    I'm glad you and your dad had this talk. My cousin told me before he told anyone else in our family back in 1983 and the only reason he told me is i threw him a birthday party and only guys showed up! I could go in depth but to keep it short; we all need to keep each other close and understand our differences. I let him know that no matter what whether family or not. He was loved and respected and i was blessed to be in this world with himbby my side. I have not seen him nor heard from him in 15 years but love him and miss him. His mother and father has since passed on and i haven't heard from him or any other family members about him.

    Wow that part when you said that you just get silent and something just comes over you and it’s not because some things wrong it’s just how you feel at the moment I have those moments to and people will ask are you okay and I am I just don’t feel like talking or I’m just in my own thoughts

    I’m new to your channel. I click on because of your hair color. Now I’m hook on your personality. Your Father is fine and if he’s married no disrespect to his wife or girlfriend. You two together the chemistry is Great 👍🏽

    One of the best videos you have ever made. Thank you & Dad for opening up and sharing the real. A lot of healing could take place if families were open to discussions on this transparent level.

    Even if I’m diagnosed with depression or/and anxiety, I wouldn’t want medication. I feel like the pharmacy will make you get addicted to the drugs, so they can make more money.

      Being addicted to prescription drugs is a bad place to be. I have to add though, there are some people who absolutely *need* medication. They literally have a chemical imbalance that needs a medical intervention of some kind. Just like diabetics need insulin or anaemic people need iron. And not all drugs for depression/anxiety or other conditions are addictive.
