Dylan Baker is extremely underrated and I swear not enough talk about him. Every film he is in which if the role even if it’s small is always outstanding. Dude is a gem
I worked with Dylan Baker briefly on a short film and he was such a great actor. Watching him give such different and nuanced performances with each take was a treat. On top of that he was so kind and had great stories. A true class act. 🙏
Horribly underrated actor, as a kid obviously grown up used to seeing him as Dr Connors in spiderman and road to perdition, but seeing Happiness recently even though having prior knowledge of it when I was younger, I made the right call to see it now a little older not only from the content, but really appreciating how great he is in acting and how daring he can be
I like that a lot of his picks were recommendations or nostalgia. It really feels like he's grateful. And then at the end when he picks a random film and says "I need this" as if the universe selected it for him and he was okay with it was really chill.
First time I've seen anyone pick out Mad, Mad World. And it's Owen from Planes, Trains and Automobiles who picks it out ("People train run outta Stubbville..."). In other words, an actor in one of my favorite movies picks out my most favorite movie of all time.
It’s wonderful that he chose Local Hero, as it was a huge inspiration behind Northern Exposure, and Baker starred on that classic show as Maggie’s obnoxious brother Jeffie.
Cracking recommendation from Cate Blanchett. Sad to think what more Larisa Shepitko could've done for cinema had her life not been cut short so soon into her career. The Ascent is a stunning achievement.
Started collecting Criterion blu-rays 3 years ago, and Local Hero was one of first purchases. Had seen it streamed somewhere and knew I had to have it. For me a truly rewatchable film at least once per year. The film is so poignant, slyly witty, gorgeous location, great acting, and Lancaster's subtle comic performance spot on. I feel so good after watching it I get a bit emotional. The brief webbed toes scene unforgettably funny, but no spoiler.
Dylan Baker is such a great character actor, and one of those talents who can play anything -- comedy, drama, anything in between. And it makes me so happy that so many people choose LOCAL HERO, one of my all-time favorite movies. It's just a little gem of happiness in a tough world.
Happiness, Delirious, Trick r Treat-- Dylan Baker took roles that most people would struggle with and absolutely OWNED them without apology. He MADE those movies despite limited screen time. Talk about an underrated actor and real professional. The man does the most with what he's been given.
If you haven't already had the pleasure, please check out Dylan Baker's narration of the audiobook of The Grapes of Wrath. I've listened to it multiple times and always loved the experience.
Local Hero will always be in my top ten. It's timeless. I've never tired of it. Just like It Happened One Night. Magical. I eventually ended up going to Scotland and sat across the bay from where it was filmed, listening to the soundtrack on my walkman. Then had my honeymoon there.
"This is Mr. Nance, in the bridal sweet! And before you offer your congratulations, there is no Mrs. Nance, and I'm all the better for it! " The Road to Perdition is one of my favorite films. Loved Mr. Baker in it!
Glad someone finally mentioned RIDE WITH THE DEVIL: I read the original Daniel Woodrell book, WOE TO LIVE BY, and was curious about the movie. One of the most unique Civil War movies, although it also feels like a more "Grindhouse/Down Home" version of GANGS OF NEW YORK.
Dylan Baker is a masterful Actor. ❤ This channel is where true creativity lives. Each selection is a delightful surprise! I love Films 🎥✌️Especially my own, if anyone decided to watch them 👀 😂
I saw him on a train in NY once and I made a complete fool of myself insisting he played the president in a movie I couldn't think of. He was super kind considering how off putting I was being.
One movie that Cate Blanchett chose in her closet picks that I've since watched and was utterly blown away by was Letter Never Sent. That movie is spellbinding.
I met him and his wife Becky Ann Baker when they came to my college and talked to our theater department. Very nice people. So cool to see him on here!
Had the great fortune to see Roger Daltry perform Tommy at Bethel Woods PAC and he was amazing! 72 yrs old and he belted the whole thing with his band - including Pete Townsend’s son - and the Hudson Valley Philharmonic. And the tix we got were FREE from a friend of ours who couldn’t go.
Dylan Baker has been in so many shows and movies I’ve enjoyed, and has made all of them better… my favourite seasonal movie, my favourite super hero film, one of my favourite shows full stop. Thank you!!!
Dr. XXX: I'm a raring, tearing wizard when it comes to cutting up... [laughs evilly] Dr. XXX: I can graft a chicken's gizzard on the wishbone of a pup. And here's the great experiment I'm just about to tackle: to find out if the end result will bark or crow or cackle. Muahahahahahaha the mad doctor disney classic cartoon 😊
Lol that cold opener. This guy is one of the bravest actors who ever lived. If he wasn't just SO brilliant some of his roles would have typecast him into obscurity. Incredible talent.
As with this episode, it's almost always more authentic, spontaneous, and entertaining when Closet guests don't know what to pick in advance (as opposed to having a prepared list).
this man is awesome. one of my favorite performances of his is in "head of state" as a campaign manager for chris rock. he is funny as the scene where rock is having a debate. he talks about the people who were at the apollo and baker yells "HALL & OATES". that always gets me though it makes me sad that hall & oates have called it quits.
(For those who are about to think I’m crazy I’m referencing the film Happiness which stars Dylan Baker) Me: what did you do to the films in the criterion closet? Dylan Baker: I picked them. Me: how was it? Dylan Baker: it was great. Me: would you do it again? Dylan Baker: yes. Me: would you ever take me to the criterion closet? Dylan baker: no. I’d go alone instead. Me: gut wrenching crying noises
Dylan Baker is one of our finest character actors who doesn't get enough credit for his amazing work. His performance in HAPPINESS is both disturbing and heartbreaking.
Dylan Baker is extremely underrated and I swear not enough talk about him. Every film he is in which if the role even if it’s small is always outstanding. Dude is a gem
I've only seen him in Happiness. That film kind of said it all...
Yeah I think his role in Happiness is so notorious it has eclipsed everything else in people’s minds, which sucks
He's a Daniel Clowes illustration come to life
His role in 'Planes, Trains, and Automobiles' was very brief but he stole the scene from Candy and Steve which is not easy to do!

So nuanced...
Dylan Baker has found HAPPINESS!
Finally
am confused isn't this the dude who (pew pew) the school with that other dude?
@@mftmss7086 Jesus, no.
@@mftmss7086 What are you on about? His character in Happiness is daydreaming of something similar though
@@linusfotograf because of the name I thought he was that dude
Someone needs to give Dylan Baker a good leading role, the guy deserves way more recognition.
His voice is pure ASMR.
I was thinking the same thing haha

Dr. Connors class...

He's gonna kill me...

I like the “random” final pick. That should be thing now for all the guests.
I swear somebody else did the random pick

That Burt Lancaster impression! 🤘🤣🤣🤣🤘

Great job also in Thirteen Days as Robert McNamara. That scene of him trying to stop the American warship from firing on the Russians was great.
"John Paul Jones?!!"
"This is LANGUAGE! The likes of which the world has never seen!"
Cracking recommendation from Cate Blanchett. Sad to think what more Larisa Shepitko could've done for cinema had her life not been cut short so soon into her career. The Ascent is a stunning achievement.
This dude needs a podcast asap, such a calm, slow, relaxing voice and vibe. Need that.

His role in Happiness is the definition of brave

Such a great and distinctive collection of picks, most of which I've never seen anybody else ever pick up or talk about in the closet.
Dylan, The Americans is the most amazingly brilliant TV series I’ve ever seen, and I thank you for your work in it.
What a great actor. Been a fan since Happiness.
Such an underrated actor! When you see his name in the credits, he just elevates whatever he's in! 😊
I love how he's whispering like in a library
Love him every time he pops up in something I do the Leo pointing at the TV meme.

Dylan was outstanding in Hunters and Damages season 4.
i reference his performance in Happiness so often. I also share a first name with him lol. Dylan Baker is the fucking best, a brilliant actor
I saw him on a train in NY once and I made a complete fool of myself insisting he played the president in a movie I couldn't think of. He was super kind considering how off putting I was being.
Dylan Baker gave us perhaps the most convincing and human portrayal of an absolute sick monster. Props to Baker and Solondz.
The thought of Dylan Baker rockin’ out to Quadrophenia brings me great joy.
Oh, cool. I remember Dylan from working on The Wizard of Loneliness. So good to see him.
Dr. Connors has a great taste
Wow, nice Lancaster impression!

“Trick r Treat”, man. Great Halloween movie and GREAT actor.
Him just grabbing whatever is awesome. Sometimes we just need to put something on without knowing what's up.
Dylan Baker was amazing in Trick R' Treat. Happy spooky season. 👻
"I never wanted to be in a closet so much in my life." Best Criterion Closet quote since Michael Shannon.
with the deaths of so many great character actors, Dylan Baker has quietly become America’s greatest living one.
Finally someone mentions IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD! It's a masterpiece. One of the best comedies ever made.
