He might still be active, but remember, Cristiano is not part of this generation of footballers, he’s much closer to Ronaldinho and Kaka in age than he is to KDB or Neymar, let alone Mbappé and Haaland.

I mean, nobody said Portugal is nobody in football until Cristiano came. What is being said is that they only appeared on few Euros and WCs until Ronaldo made them regular participants.

Ronaldo only became the most important player from 2008 onwards. Until then, two generations were responsible for the good performances in 2000, 2002 qualifiers, 2004, and 2006: the golden one from 96-02 and Mourinho's midfield in 04-06. Ronaldo was there in 04, but he was just an irreverent young kid (just like Leao is now). No one said he was the most important player at the time; Figo was still the most experienced and Deco the most talented, not to mention Ricardo Carvalho.
Then, the generations of 66 and 84 had nothing to do with Ronaldo. The true reasons for why Portugal improved so much are 3: 1) increase in popularity and improved academies (which produced players like Ronaldo), 2) better organization at the federation level, and 3) the number of spots increased for each tournament. For instance, Portugal did not qualify to 98 because it finished just behind Germany (unfairly).
Another thing is that Ronaldo was still very much critized and kind of underperformed in the big competitions initially. He only became the one man team around 2012, when he scored multiple goals in the Euro and then carried Portugal through the Sweden playoffs. He was the main main until 2018. After that, I felt that he no longer contributed as much as others.
