Holy Moses, that is insane how far he got. You knew it was bad when they mentioned twisting the front drive shaft off. I know he was determined to get somewhere but that's taking it much to far. Made many mistakes that finally caught up with him. Huge thumbs up on the recovery.
Went to welding school in Aberdeen MD remember seeing some of the heavy equipment recovery training going on during my time there. This was back in mid 70s, is Aberdeen Proving Grounds still the place they do this training at?
Jeep liberty is one of the most powerful cars ever. I bough used one in 2011. Since that time the smoke available in the exhaust and til now it's working and nothing replaced or repaired. WAW great car. I love it and hope to find new one 2005-2007 and will buy it directly and no hesitate 💪
If he drove that Liberty back into that area that far when he gets another rig you guys have got to take him Wheeling with you I can only imagine where this one guy would go in a good rig
Indeed! I once tried to drive a 2WD dune buggy over a bunch of 3-foot diameter power poles laying on the ground. As soon as the back tires got over the first pole, the poles rolled apart and promptly high-centered the buggy. After several minutes of flooring it in reverse and making loads of tire smoke, I managed to pick up some traction and drive right back out the way I came!
Liberties are better than the jeep tj. Much stouter suspension. Ball joints not so much but everything else is solid. Chasis is same as most all jeeps.
“This whole thing’s gonna need a go-through and a flush after everything”. Does the owner flush the transmission before or after cutting the roof off with a sawzall?
THAT makes for a good story for that guy-- " Rolled over out in the middle of nowhere and got rescued by a high powered Corvair!!! " and we hear folks- go-- "yeah right!! if you stop drinking you wouldn't have rolled over"..

Often times the camera does not show how steep the angles are, and when the camera does pick that up, it's usually WAY worse than what we see on video. Congrats on making this one work. Real pros!!
My second comment , I totally agree with everyone's thoughts about how he got so far in there . An adventurous soul . He ( the customer ) was cleaning up after himself , ballast on some of the treacherous off camber trail sections and waiting with shovel in hand to help with recovery .
I am blown away at how far that Liberty was able to go on that "road"!!! LOVING the new Corvair even though it's not completed 100% and i can't wait to see it finished!
The Corvair's performance has been demonstrated, and it should look as it does now, since door handles, glass, and interior touches won't add that much. Max's problem is that he's a bit too doggy to mingle with people.
as a non mechanical person who would have a meltdown if something like this happened to me, I fully respect everyone on the recovery team! I wonder how much these recoveries cost?

It's shorter than the XJ and taller. Was advertised as having the same cargo space in back but got it from vertical space thus the higher center of gravity. Never liked 'em because of that. Chrysler never should have nixed the XJ platform rather it should have gotten a better V6 as AMC intended back in '84, quadra coil suspension with its own Rubicon configuration (D44 front and rear), and some H3 styling cues. That's what it should have looked like but Hummer beat 'em to it. The XJ is dead. Long live the XJ!

The Corvair may not be finished...but it's certainly useful as it is right now! That said this is like live testing for it....anything you find that's not up to snuff right now, can be improved before it's finished. So far though, it's handling things quite nicely.
If the ravine hadn’t collapsed under him and sent him rolling he probably would’ve made it out without help. I have a diesel Liberty with mud tires and I’ve taken it to some pretty sketchy places. Probably the most underestimated Jeep made

My buddy Steve who drives a green semi and transports houses, went up saw you guys last week got me a signed shirt from all of you THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!
That Liberty has a very good 4x4 system. Never underestimate a Jeep, it just might embarrass you. A guy at a cruise in was bragging how awesome his Ford pick up was. After about ten minutes of him jabbering, I said, "I have a four cylinder Jeep that could probably give you a good tug o war". He laughed, "No four cylinder is going to pull my big V-8 4x4". He wasn't thinking about traction. His pickup has about 70% weight on the front tires and 30 on the back. I didn't warn him my 'Jeep' was a Liberty with a 4 cylinder diesel that made 300 pounds of torque just off idle. When I pulled around to hook up, he said, "That's a V-6 but I'll still drag it all over this parking lot". So I showed him the underhood and the owners manual. Four cylinder 2.8 liters. I didn't even punch it at first, just held about 1/3 throttle. I could hear his back tires spinning he was barely pulling me. So I gave it 1/2 throttle and I started creeping forward. He got frantic and floored his truck. LOL. Smoke was rolling off his tires as I pulled him around the lot.
Yeah, it's crazy just how capable they are in stock form. If you wanted to do a cheap SAS, you could probably grab the D30 from a ZJ Grand Cherokee and have a good start as long as you don't go crazy with the tires. The Liberty already has coils. You could even build a super 30 if you felt like lifting it further. They don't look like it, but the 1st gen Liberty has a slightly longer wheelbase than an XJ and a stiffer unibody structure than the XJ and ZJ. I'm surprised they aren't more popular.
@@GTPCarpy 3.7 produced 210 hp at 5200 rpm and 235 ft lbs of torque at 4000. 4.0 produced 190 hp at 4600 rpm and 235 ft lbs of torque at 3600.. don't know where you get that the 3.7 is gutless from

As a Liberty CRD driver and a Corvair enthusiast, this video was amazing. I love the comments about the Liberty making it that far and I was impressed with the stance and power of the Corvair, though I'm sure my 1965 Corvair coupe, in stock trim, wouldn't have made it past the parking spot for the truck - if that far. LOL
Even when brand new, a Corvair could not make it through the Smokey Mountains on the paved roads without pulling over several times to sit and cool off, mom had a friend with one.

Great recovery! I am always amazed by what your off-road vehicles can do as far as climbing through trails I would consider impassable by any vehicle. Matt, you provide a terrific service, always done with grace and humor.
When I supported long distance trekkers on the Arizona Trail between Mormon Lake and the Arizona-Utah line, I drove solo in a year 2000 4Runner, manual, low range, lifted and full skids on named backcountry roads - forest service and BLM roads. There were numerous occasions in which risk persuaded me to turnaround and get out - increasing hazards of the road, questionable skill set, zero 911cellular signal, too much arboreal canopy for Iridium satellite phone connection. In my invincible youth on a motorcycle and on a mountain bicycle I observed that big trouble resulted from a cascade of lesser "what were you thinking!?" errors. I've watched a dozen or two of Matt's videos and a few thoughts emerge dominant. 1: Matt and the crew are highly experienced and cautious; 2: with minor exceptions they set out in two or more vehicles and with several crew members; and 3: so far in my viewing of the videos, every one of the parties they've rescued, the question begs, "WTF were you thinking!?". Correct me, please?
You are correct, they are decent. I had a 2006 diesel and had it on a 2" OME lift with 265/75R16's with detroit truetracs in both axles. It's pretty capable like that, but the biggest issue is tires. Even fitting the 265/75's required cutting and hammering and all sorts of stuff to barely clear. Thats not even a 32" tire. Meanwhile I fit 285/70R17's on my stock Lexus GX and all I had to do was heat up the fender liner to bend it slightly. And I was constantly having issues with ball joints and wheel bearings in the Jeep and had to replace the rear boomerang link. Like by 100k miles I had done most of them at least twice. Great vehicle on paper but I personally felt it fell short in real life.
We owned a Liberty. It actually did pretty well off road. A bit short on ground clearance but approach and departure angles were not too bad. We stuck to easier trails but it was a little mule willing to get the job done.

He was on his way back from further up the trail!. He was on an uneventful (for him) journey. It all came unstuck when the front driveshaft blew...so he only had rear wheel drive. As we can see even when it was being towed, rear wheels drive only means the back end "walks" on a sideslope under power... So, this sideslope = roll. He drove that vehicle back to his home after Matt towed him out. Not his first rodeo..

I live vicariously through your videos & feel a sense of peace watching them. The oil as transmission fluid is interesting too. Entertaining and educational as always!
It works in an emergency when quite frankly the only objective was to get the vehicle out... Some oily substance in the trans was better than no oily substance and no drive.... But the long term problems re the clutch packs etc. absorbing this oil???... Don't do it unless in extremis...and you don't mind writing your trans off....if not the whole vehicle.

Last night, in the mud, in the Elantra. All I could think was, If we get stuck and could call Matt and made it into a video the subscriber comments would all be about why that dummy thought he could take that car up there. Fun happens folks. Adventures abound for the adventurous. Love this video. Yeah, mistakes were made but what a story to tell friends and family. Happy Sunday!
Exactly! The adventurous spirit is alive and well, as it should be.

These people are always happy and there's never a vulgar word spoken. This is a rarity anymore
Seeing the Corvair in this kind of terrain, it’s just so beastly
It’s such a beauty, to see and hear, it must be a blast to drive.🇷🇴🇬🇧👍🏻
Holy Moses, that is insane how far he got. You knew it was bad when they mentioned twisting the front drive shaft off. I know he was determined to get somewhere but that's taking it much to far. Made many mistakes that finally caught up with him. Huge thumbs up on the recovery.

That guy can drive. May not be the smartest tack in the box but he can drive

Yeah, that road was one pucker after another.
Those liberty are junk....they try to roll on level pavement. I am super impressed he made it out there!
@@imdrunken dumb or dumber?
Love the owner assisted anti-roll maneuver at 18:20
It amazing what you can do when you don't know that you can't do it.
Impossible is nothing
Early Morrvair, as a new subscriber this is gold. I’ve never wanted an off-road beast until I saw the morrvair in action.

The power of not knowing you shouldn't do something. "Man, I made it all the way out here alone in just a Jeep Liberty!" (axle snaps) "No problem! It's a Jeep!" (laws of Physics) "well shit."
On regular road tyres, too. Pushing his luck, but also strangely impressive. :-)
At least he used his Jeep as a Jeep. Some more aggressive tires would help though. Respect.
Always wondered what they are capable of. Impressive
Nah, looks like he just caught an edge rather than attempt something the Liberty shouldn't do. All driver error

I love how the dogs always seem to know where they are going 😂
We witnessed a liberty just like that wheelin recently. He was going everywhere his Jeep buddies were going.
I have more respect for those POS libertys now though. Who would have thought.
I have a lifted wrangler and. Diesel liberty that’s stock with mud tires and the Liberty can make it through way more than you think it can. You now the first soldiers that die are the ones that don’t respect the enemies abilities. It may be a Liberty but it’s still a Jeep
@@seabournewolf2298 I have had a couple of the diesel Libertys, I really liked them.
I had liberty with 3 inch lift and 31 mt's. It was 5 speed manual and was a absolute blast off road. So many xj's and wranglers got a kick out of it on the trails. Had it's limits, but impressive for a IFS.
Same here although mine is an automatic. Lifted on 31” mud terrains. I threw a locker in the rear end and it gets me pretty much anywhere I need to go. Love it when the wrangler and XJ guys and see me keeping up

Mine is lifted on 31s. 45rfe auto and 2.8 diesel. Absolute blast to drive.
The Liberties and Wk Grand Cherokees were fun off road and comfortable on the road.
Should of brought front driveshaft, it would have been easy to change out when upside it on side🤣
As someone who almost rolled my parents Liberty multiple times in high school, they love to spin out and are a bit too top heavy.
Anything with high ground clearance with a tall profile is going to be somewhat top heavy.
@@Sashazur the Liberty is also kind of narrow, which contributes to the top-heavy, tippy feel. I had to remind myself driving my 2005 that it didn't corner like my Audi...
Long live the XJ!
ohhhh yea lol although i had my liberty do some pretty crazy shit completely stock lol
Tracy, hi just this week a pilot & his sone went to a small airport camped by the aircraft , then saw all those tracks in grass & gravel, then came upon a memorial some 30 years ago, some btunk guy & his cousin were doing donuts, in some jeep, it rolled, the cousin was ejected & crushed, someone else went for help, no phone service , anyhow he went to JAIL but those demurs were STILL THERE after all those years, it was a FOREST SERVICE AIRPORT, CHEERS 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Probably the most underestimated Jeep made
Gets a bad rap for having an independent front suspension like the WK grand Cherokees. Both will surprise you when pressed.
Sometimes you can't turn around and you have to go forward till you roll over further down the wash. Sometimes you just dig a deeper grave for yourself. Or Drive it like you stole it.
I have been in spots where there's no going back the way you came. Once you make the first big mistake, all the other mistakes, are just gravy.
a legit recovery. well done guys. and the guy who walked out of there....wow.
I subscribed because I wanted to follow the Corvair build but I stayed for the recoveries, this one was really interesting.

Your brain had more traction than his......
With that rig and those shoes, that liberty owner did a great job getting it to that point.
@@DriveCarToBar 3.7s are pretty gutless especially compared to the previous 4.0. I always assumed it was the same or shorter wheelbase than an XJ
@@GTPCarpy slightly less torque but more horsepower.
@@DriveCarToBar the horse power doesn't matter when wheeling. Peak torque almost off idle is one of the reasons the 4.0 Jeeps are way more popular

Oh the stories that Liberty can tell! Given the location, its likely the owner has taken it into similarly challenging terrain before - just this time had an oopsie.
Done some pretty impressive climbing and crawling with my liberty!
Other than a G.M.R.S. and the Mopar lights on the roof, it's completely stock from the factory.

Very proud of my '07 KJ!

My late husband and I loved to 4 wheel and we were in late 50s! Just fun
I hope you used yellow stitching on the interior. I think that would look good. One more thing, "Don't run over the rope".
and it was MATT that drove over the rope!
The Jeep Liberty is severely underrated as an off-roader in my opinion and why I adding one. Great video!
I'm sure Ed would have said, "He must have had rocks in his head."
Yes sir
We owned a Liberty. It actually did pretty well off road. A bit short on ground clearance but approach and departure angles were not too bad. We stuck to easier trails but it was a little mule willing to get the job done.

He is one seriously hard dude. He's probably seen There Will Be Blood two dozen times.

I live vicariously through your videos & feel a sense of peace watching them. The oil as transmission fluid is interesting too. Entertaining and educational as always!
It works in an emergency when quite frankly the only objective was to get the vehicle out...
