    Glossary of Key Terms
    ● Cesspit: A pit, usually lined with brick or stone, used for collecting household waste. In 19th-century London, overflowing cesspits contributed to the unsanitary conditions.
    ● Cholera: An infectious disease typically spread through contaminated water, causing severe diarrhoea and dehydration. Cholera outbreaks were a recurring threat in 19th-century London.
    ● Effluent: Liquid waste, specifically sewage, discharged into a body of water. The sources frequently use this term when discussing the disposal of London's waste into the Thames.
    ● Great Stink: The term given to the period of exceptionally foul odour emanating from the River Thames during the summer of 1858. The stench, caused by accumulated sewage and hot weather, forced the government to finally address the issue of London's inadequate sewer system.
    ● Miasma Theory: The prevalent belief in the 19th century that diseases like cholera were spread by foul-smelling air arising from decaying organic matter. This theory initially shaped sanitation efforts.
    ● Outfall: The point where a sewer or drain discharges its contents. The location of London's sewage outfalls into the Thames was a significant point of contention in Bazalgette's plans.
    ● Sewage: Waste matter carried away in sewers, typically a mixture of human waste, industrial by-products, and rainwater runoff.
    Glossary of Key Figures
    ● Joseph Bazalgette: A prominent civil engineer who designed and oversaw the construction of London’s modern sewer system. His project was a major feat of engineering that dramatically improved the city’s sanitation and public health.
    ● Edwin Chadwick: A social reformer who was instrumental in establishing the Metropolitan Commission of Sewers (MCS). Chadwick believed in the connection between cleanliness and public health and advocated for improvements to London's sanitation.
    ● Charles Dickens: A renowned author who, through his writing, drew attention to the polluted state of the Thames. His novel Little Dorrit and personal correspondence vividly described the river's condition, raising public awareness of the need for change.
    ● Benjamin Disraeli: As Chancellor of the Exchequer, Disraeli played a crucial role in pushing through the legislation needed to fund and authorise Bazalgette's sewer project.
    ● Michael Faraday: A scientist who publicly highlighted the severe pollution of the Thames in 1855 with his letter to The Times, describing it as a sewer based on his own observations.
    ● Sir Benjamin Hall: The First Commissioner of Works who initially approved Bazalgette's plans but raised concerns about the location of sewage outfalls. Hall's concerns led to revisions in the plans.
    ● Dr. John Snow: A physician who challenged the prevailing miasma theory by proposing that cholera was spread through contaminated water. His work, particularly his investigation of a cholera outbreak in 1854, was critical in advancing our understanding of disease transmission.

I appreciate these ~1hr long episodes. (vs 9 hour comps) I'm glad you have the variety, because I have opted for both. But usually I'm falling asleep in under an hour, and honestly I find it disorienting & a little confusing when I wake up and still hear a video playing. Love the vids, AussieMR.

Glad you like them both, I want to be able to provide for people who want either thing. Personally, if I wake up and hear a stranger talking I may go into a panic, but many people seem to like this.

Really like the channel but so many mispronunciations in this story! It’s pronounced ‘Bazil-jet’ not ‘Bazil-gate’. Clerkenwell where I live is ‘Clark’ enwell. Cadogan is ‘Ka-dug-un’ and Bow in East London is like rainbow not ‘take a bow’! This actually kept me awake so sort of counterproductive. But the stories usually do the job. 😊
